Princess Ngalessa

Entry and safety information:
The U.S. Department of State provides the following information for travel to the Republic of Congo.
The trip is not recommended for people with limited mobility.
Destination: Congo Basin
The second largest tropical rainforest after the Amazon rainforest has an extraordinary flora and fauna. Many areas have never been explored by humans. As a result, the jungle is particularly intact and the wildlife is very abundant.
There are large numbers of lowland gorillas (200,000 individuals), forest elephants (8,000 individuals), chimpanzees, bonobos, hippos, bongos, bush pigs, buffalo, blue duikers, sitatungas, panthers, etc. Most of these species can be observed in Bai Mbeli, a clearing covering several hectares that is rich in mineral salts, flowers, and nutritious leaves.
In addition to Nile crocodiles, Goliath tigerfish, and pangolins , the Congo Basin is home to more than 350 bird species, including the black-chinned weaver, the Finsch's francolin, and the Congo wheatear . You can also discover large, mysterious species such as the black-bellied bustard and the Senegal bustard, as well as other rare species such as the black-headed bee-eater and Sladen's barbican, popular forest species such as the African grey parrot and various species of hornbills, turacos, kingfishers, barbicans, small barbets, sunbirds, and weavers can be discovered—along with thousands upon thousands of insects and over 10,000 plant species.
Further information at a glance:
- Large national parks such as Nouabalé-Ndoki, Lac Télé, Dzanga-Sangha, and Lobéké are World Heritage Sites and examples of ecosystem management.
- Indigenous populations preserve ancestral traditions and ancient knowledge. The Pygmies are the last hunters and gatherers in the world who have preserved their way of life. They live in complete harmony with the forest and with a vibrant culture. The Sangha-sangha peoples live on the banks of the rivers, while the Batékés are at home in the hills.
- Travel in the footsteps of the great explorers (Conrad, Stanley, Livingstone, Brazza) to the heart of the African continent.
- Accessibility: 7 hours flight time from Europe.

itinerary
Itinerary upstream from Brazzaville to Oyo
We offer the trip in two directions:
- Upstream from Brazzaville to Oyo: We are covering this route day by day here.
- Downstream from Oyo to Brazzaville: This route is exactly the reverse and begins with an overnight stay in a hotel in Brazzaville and a 45-minute flight over the rainforest to Ouesso on the morning of the second day. There, your expedition begins on land until you board the Princesse Ngalessa in Oyo on day 9 and follow the Congo and Alima rivers to Brazzaville. We will be happy to send you the detailed itinerary on request.
Your travel to and from Brazzaville is not included in your tour price.
Since our customers all have individual wishes for their trip, we are happy to book flights separately. Of course, the flights then become part of a secure package tour. We recommend an overnight stay in Brazzaville to cushion any irregularities with the flight or loss of luggage. We are happy to organize everything for you on request. Please contact us.
Day 1: Welcome aboard!
After arriving in Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo, you will board the Princesse Ngalessa in the afternoon and spend your first night on the ship.
If you booked your trip through us, you will already have spent at least one night in a hotel in Brazzaville.
Overnight stay on board
Day 2: Sightseeing in Brazzaville & Cast off
In the morning, you will set off on a city tour and meet members of La Sape, the famous "society of stylish people." Then your river expedition up the Congo will begin, passing gently rolling green hills. Brazzaville lies behind you, and the dense rainforest spreads out before you.
During the first few kilometers of the river, you will get to know your tour guides and gain exciting insights into the history and culture of the Congo.
Overnight stay on board
Day 3: The Téké Kingdom and the Kébé-Kébé Dance
In the morning, you will visit Ngabe, one of the ancient capitals of the Téké Kingdom. You will climb through the village to meet the reigning queen. As guardian of "Nkwembali," the spiritual deity of the Bateke, she is the only person authorized to transfer power to the new king, the Makoko. She wields great influence in the Téké Kingdom, one of the most important kingdoms in the country.
You will experience a Kébé-Kébé ritual, a dance and an initiation ceremony from the Congo. In its usual form, the Kébé-Kébé dance resembles the whirling dervishes. The dancers wear raffia robes adorned with feathers from various birds and move a doll, which usually represents a painted Koyo head and displays the characteristic scar patterns of the ethnic group.
Overnight stay on board
Day 4: Bonobo tracking in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Bonobos are a rare and endemic species of chimpanzee found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are genetically closest to humans, sharing 98.7% of their genetic makeup with us. Three bonobo groups can be observed around the village of Nkala—the only place in the world where you can encounter semi-habituated bonobos in the wild.
In the morning, you will leave the ship and drive for about two hours through hilly terrain to the bonobo camp. There, you will gain insight into the project developed by local communities to protect bonobos and learn more about their way of life and the challenges of species conservation work.
Overnight stay in a tent camp
Day 5: Bonobo tracking
After waking up, you set off early for the forest and position yourself beneath the bonobo nests. As soon as the bonobos wake up, you watch them stretch and start their day. You then follow them to continue your observation. Towards late morning, you return to Princesse Ngalessa.
Overnight stay on board
Day 6: The town of Mossaka and its famous salted fish & the village of Likendze
In the morning, you will set off to explore the town of Mossaka. You will discover traces of the colonial era and visit the lively local market, where you can immerse yourself in the everyday life of the locals. On a tour through the narrow streets, you will see the traditional fish dryers used to make salted fish – a technique for which Mossaka is famous throughout the region. You will also learn about the production of palm wine and meet a potter. After lunch, you will return to the ship and continue your journey towards Likendze.
In the village of Likendze on the Sangha River, you will learn about various fishing techniques, including casting nets, trap fishing, and net fishing. If you wish, you can even try your hand at fishing with a line. In the late afternoon, you will go bird watching and look for birds typical of the region, including ospreys, palm vultures, African fish eagles, hammerheads, cormorants, kingfishers, weavers, ibises, gray herons, storks, herons, hornbills, magpies, Brazza's swallows, and the shy turaco.
Overnight stay on board
Day 7: Alima River and the Moye people
In the morning, you will set off in excursion boats to observe the hippos that live a few kilometers north of the village. Back on board, you will continue up the Alima River —a beautiful narrow and winding river surrounded by swamp forests. You will end the day in the village of Bonda, where you will meet the Moye people. The villagers accompany you as you explore the flooded forest – by canoe or on foot, depending on the water level.
In the evening, the Moye perform a traditional dance ceremony on the riverbank. After dark, you will circle the area in boats, listen to the sounds of the forest, and perhaps be lucky enough to spot the glowing eyes of crocodiles.
Overnight stay on board
Day 8: Traditional medicine
You continue along the Alima River. Passing the many bends in the river, you will discover charming raffia villages on the banks. Later, you will reach the village of Mondongo, which is also built mainly from raffia and inhabited by the Moye people. A local guide will explain the traditional preparation of remedies. The swamp forest is full of plants that the villagers use to treat illnesses and injuries.
In the afternoon, accompanied by your knowledgeable guides, you will take a walk through the forest. You will learn more about the different trees and plants as well as the secret life of the forest – from the fascinating world of insects to the interactions between flora and fauna in the lush canopy.
Overnight stay on board
Day 9: Transfer to Ouesso, capital of Sangha
After lunch, you will disembark and begin your bus journey to Ouesso through bushland and tropical rainforest (approx. 6 hours). The route runs along the eastern border of Odzala-Kokoua National Park.
Overnight stay in a local hotel
Days 10 to 14: Discoveries in the tri-national Sangha region
The Sangha region is a unique UNESCO World Heritage Site in the northwestern Congo Basin, on the border between Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and the Republic of Congo. The protected area consists of three contiguous national parks with a total of around 750,000 hectares of untouched rainforest. Here you will find an enormous diversity of species: Nile crocodiles, impressive Goliath tigerfish, forest elephants, endangered western lowland gorillas, and vulnerable chimpanzees.
Day 10 – On the Sangha River
In the morning, you will set off in small boats on the upper reaches of the Sangha River towards Bayanga in the Central African Republic. The approximately 7.5-hour trip takes you through dense rainforest, past small villages and settlements. Along the way, you can observe numerous bird species and, with a little luck, monkeys. In the afternoon, you will reach your lodge and enjoy a sundowner with a view of the river.
Overnight stay in a lodge by the river
Day 11 – Gorilla tracking
After a short drive to the gorilla base camp, your hike through the forest begins. Accompanied by experienced BaAka trackers, you will follow the tracks of the gorilla groups and observe the animals from a safe distance. Young animals play, females eat, the silverback stands guard. After about an hour, you will set off again, taking unforgettable impressions with you.
Overnight stay in a lodge by the river
Day 12 – Dzangha-Baï: The village of elephants
Early in the morning, you will visit the famous Dzangha-Baï clearing, where up to 150 elephants can be spotted in a single day. From the observation platform in the tree, you will also see buffalo, bongos, sitatungas, and numerous bird species. Sufficient time for photos is of course planned.
Overnight stay in a lodge by the river
Day 13 – Hokous salt licks and their inhabitants
In the morning, you will explore the seven Hokous bais, natural salt licks in the rainforest. On hikes, you will discover elephants, gorillas, forest hogs, antelopes, and numerous bird species. Local trackers will help you observe agile mangabeys – silver-gray monkeys that move skillfully through the canopy and maintain their social structures through a variety of sounds.
Overnight stay in a lodge by the river
Day 14 – Encounter with the BaAka pygmies
You will immerse yourself in the culture of the BaAka, one of the region's best-known forest peoples. For example, you will experience traditional net hunting, learn about medicinal plants, collect honey, or help with fishing. After lunch, the tribe will perform an impressive water drumming ceremony, in which they rhythmically beat the water. You will end the day with a walk through Bayanga.
Overnight stay in a lodge by the river
Day 15: Return to Ouesso
After four days in the national park, you will return to Ouesso on a 7-hour excursion boat trip. You will have another opportunity to enjoy the untouched forest before viewing it from above the next day.
Overnight stay in a local hotel
Day 16: Flight to Brazzaville
After the shared transfer to the airport, you will board your return flight to Brazzaville . Through the airplane windows, you will see the deep green canopy of the rainforest and gain a whole new perspective on the pristine Congo Basin.
Your Congo expedition by water and land ends with your arrival in Brazzaville. If you don't want to fly straight home, please contact us about extension options!
