Anyone planning a trip to Antarctica is setting course for a lifelong dream.

Antarctic travel is one of the last great adventures of our time. The seventh continent is the coldest, driest, and windiest in the world. Snow-white and deserted, it lies there. The scenery is so surreal that you feel like you are on another planet. No other trip is like a trip to Antarctica.

When planning a trip to Antarctica, don't compromise. Put your trust in experts who know the region and its unique characteristics inside out, as well as every single expedition ship. With the right ship and the ideal route, your Antarctic expedition will be the trip of a lifetime.

Especially in the current climate, it is extremely important to be aware of the latest conditions regarding arrival and departure, as well as the situation on the ground. A travel partner who can respond flexibly to all eventualities provides a high degree of security.

10 fascinating facts about Antarctica

  1. Antarctica is a solid landmass and therefore (unlike the Arctic/North Pole with its drifting ice sheets) a continent.
  2. Antarctica is the driest (ice) desert in the world. In some regions, it has not rained or snowed for over two million years. In some valleys, the humidity is so low that neither ice nor snow can settle.
  3. Antarctica is, on average, the windiest place in the world. Wind speeds of up to 327 km/h have been recorded.
  4. The continent as a whole contains around 90 percent of the world's freshwater ice and around 70 percent of the Earth's total freshwater reserves!
  5. The Antarctic ice sheet can be up to 4.5 kilometers thick. The geographic South Pole is approximately 3,000 meters above sea level.
  6. Around 30 countries operate approximately 80 research stations in Antarctica.
  7. During the Antarctic summer (approximately November to March), the sun does not set. Antarctica gets more sun than the equator.
  8. Antarctica is the only continent where no reptiles live. Incidentally, there are no spiders here either.
  9. On December 8, 2013, the rock band Metallica played a rock concert under the motto "Freeze 'em all!" at the Carlini research station. This made them the first band to have played a concert on every continent in a single year.
  10. Antarctica is the only continent free of coronavirus.

Antarctic Travel – Routes with Expedition Ship Antarctica

The classic: Antarctic Peninsula

The Antarctic Peninsula, approximately 1,200 km long, stretches towards South America and is the most popular travel region in Antarctica.

Due to its geographical location north of the Antarctic Circle, it is easy to travel to. It captivates visitors with volcanic islands, icebergs, high cliffs, deep fjords, abandoned whaling stations, a rich variety of wildlife, and many other attractions.

Milestone Antarctic Circle

Magical mark at 66°33′ south. The Antarctic Circle can only be crossed during a very short period of the year.

Not every ship can plow through thick pack ice. Few people get to experience this. Are you in?

ANIMALS & EXPLORERS: THE GREAT CIRCUS

The route via the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the South Orkney Islands to Antarctica is synonymous with penguin colonies, seal families, and flocks of birds on uninhabited and remote islands in the South Atlantic, which are closely linked to the heroic stories of polar explorer, adventurer, and discoverer Ernest Shackleton.

Skip the Drake

If you want to avoid the rough Drake Passage and save 3–4 days on the journey from South America to Antarctica, choose one of our Skip the Drake trips. You will fly from Punta Arenas in southern Chile to King George Island in the South Shetland Islands in 2.5 hours and start your ship expedition there.

Half circumnavigation of Antarctica

The journey takes you from Tierra del Fuego to the southernmost tip of New Zealand (or vice versa) through the UNESCO Ross Sea Biosphere Reserve, following in the footsteps of the greatest adventurers and explorers of our time.

JOURNEY TO THE SOUTH POLE – FLIGHT EXPEDITION & EXPEDITION SHIP ANTARCTICA

90° south. No point on Earth is more difficult to reach than the geographic South Pole.

From here, all eyes turn northward.
