itinerary

Day 1 Bella Italia!
Today you’ll fly from Germany to Venice, where a welcome dinner will get you in the mood for your trip. You’ll spend the next two nights in a comfortable hotel in Venice’s historic center. (D)
Day 2 Venice, la Serenissima
In the morning, you’ll explore this venerable trading metropolis on a walking tour; its silhouette glitters over the lagoon even from a distance. You’ll take a vaporetto through the Canale della Giudecca, past palaces and bridges, to the world-famous St. Mark’s Square. The Doge’s Palace, St. Mark’s Basilica, the Prison, the Bridge of Sighs—you simply have to succumb to Venice’s charm! In the afternoon, there will still be time for your own explorations of the lagoon city. (B)
Day 3 Florence, cradle of the Renaissance
Today marks the start of your train adventure: from here on out, you’ll be traveling all the way across Italy! At Santa Lucia Station, you’ll board the comfortable Frecciarossa high-speed train and travel through the vast Po Valley to Bologna and through the wooded hills of the Apennines to Florence. As on all subsequent train journeys, your luggage will be transported separately—it doesn’t get any more convenient than this. In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the life of the Tuscan metropolis on a guided city tour. From the Church of Santa Maria Novella, you’ll walk to San Lorenzo to see the Medici tombs designed by Michelangelo. You’ll marvel at the Gates of Paradise in the cathedral, which is entirely clad in green and red marble. You’ll spend the next two nights in Florence at a comfortable hotel. (B)
Day 4 Pearls of Tuscany
An espresso with a view of the majestic cathedral, a visit to the world-famous Uffizi Gallery, or a stroll across the famous Ponte Vecchio—plan your day in Florence exactly as you’d like. Or join our optional excursion: we’ll take the train to Pisa. There, the Piazza del Duomo awaits you with the world-famous Leaning Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a stroll through the lively university town, you’ll continue on to Lucca. This charming town, with its Romanesque churches, medieval towers, the Amphitheater Square, and the imposing city walls, offers picture-perfect Tuscan panoramas. In the evening, you’ll take the train back to Florence through the rolling green hills. (B)
Day 5: All roads lead to Rome
Today, you’ll travel by high-speed train to Rome, the Eternal City. There, you’ll explore the historic center on a guided tour and round out the day with a delicious dinner. (D)
Day 6: Ancient Rome
Today you’ll have time to explore the city’s most beautiful sights on your own: how about a detour to the Spanish Steps or the Trevi Fountain? If you’d like, your tour guide can accompany you on an optional excursion to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, considered the birthplace of the Roman Empire. (B)
Day 7: The Apocalypse of Pompeii
Ciao, Rome! Today you’ll travel in comfort on the Frecciarossa high-speed train to Naples. From Naples, you’ll continue by bus to Pompeii, where you’ll visit the world-famous archaeological site. In 79 AD, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, a natural disaster of biblical proportions occurred here, simultaneously destroying and preserving everyday life in the ancient world. Continue on to Salerno, where you will stay tonight. In the evening, enjoy the panoramic view of the Gulf of Salerno … (B)
Day 8: Along the coast to Sicily
Today, you’ll enjoy a long, beautiful train ride from Salerno southward along the Tyrrhenian Sea. You’ll cross the Strait of Messina on a train ferry to reach Sicily. You’re free to spend the rest of the evening as you wish. (B)
Day 9: Dancing on Mount Etna
Today you’ll climb to the summit of Mount Etna. The ascent is spectacular: olive and lemon groves, vineyards, chestnut forests, and finally, solidified lava. If you’d like, you can take the cable car up to the snow-capped summit of the volcano. But that’s not all: During the ride on the historic 19th-century Circumetnea narrow-gauge railway, you’ll once again enjoy the Garden of Eden at the foot of Mount Etna. Over lunch, you’ll recharge for your city tour of Taormina, where you’ll follow in the footsteps of the island’s Greco-Roman heritage. You’ll reflect on the memories of your unforgettable trip over a group dinner. (FMA)
Day 10: Arrivederci, Italia!
Return flight from Catania to Germany. (B)
