In Alaska, the uniquely majestic wilderness of the far north awaits you! The northernmost state in the US attracts visitors with its breathtaking nature, mighty ice age glaciers, diverse wildlife, and a rich and vibrant indigenous heritage. It was the gold rush at the end of the 19th century that first attracted adventurers, merchants, and settlers here—and led to the creation of some of the world's most beautiful railroads in the midst of this overwhelming wilderness.

itinerary

Day 1 Flight to Alaska
Your journey begins with a flight across the Atlantic and the entire North American continent to Fairbanks. At the welcome dinner in the restaurant, your tour guide will get you in the mood for the adventures of the coming days. You will spend the next two nights in a mid-range hotel in Fairbanks. (D)
Day 2: In the footsteps of pioneers and reindeer
Today you will get to know Fairbanks, the gateway to the Arctic, better. At a reindeer ranch, you will meet these impressive animals and walk alongside your new furry friends through a birch forest. In the afternoon, you will take a trip on the Chena and Tanana Rivers aboard a paddlewheel steamboat. (FMA)
Day 3 Denali Star Train
Today, the Denali Star, Alaska's flagship train, awaits you at Fairbanks Station. The tracks on the journey south follow the loops of the Nenana River through Healy Canyon. In the afternoon, your train reaches Denali National Park, which is dominated by Alaska's highest mountain, Mount Denali, at 6,190 m. You will spend the next two nights in an idyllic lodge in Denali National Park. (FA)
Day 4 Into the Wild
Today, you will explore the fantastic national park with its incredible landscapes. Along the spectacular road corridor, you will have some of the best opportunities to observe the park's wild inhabitants. Keep an eye out for beavers, moose, and bears at the Teklanika River! (FA)
Day 5 Alaska's highest peaks
In the late morning, you will board the Denali Star again to roll towards Talkeetna. The ride across the 280-meter-long Hurricane Gulch railway bridge with views of the majestic peaks of the Alaska Range is particularly spectacular. When gold was discovered in Talkeetna on the Susitna River in 1892, gold prospectors and adventurers flocked to the area. In 1915, the Alaska Railroad set up its headquarters here. In the late afternoon, stroll through the pretty town with its numerous wooden houses from the gold rush era. Today you will stay in an idyllically located lodge in Talkeetna. (FA)
Day 6 Upstream
Three large rivers converge in Talkeetna in the foothills of Denali. In the morning, you will take a boat tour where you can admire the local flora and fauna. In the late afternoon, the Denali Star will be waiting for you again. Enjoy the comfort and service on board—and, of course, the fantastic views. You will cross the Knik River and arrive in Anchorage, where you will spend the next two nights in a hotel. (B)
Day 7 In Anchorage
In the morning, take a city tour to explore Alaska's largest city by far – a fascinating mix of metropolis and wilderness. Moose and bears in the front yard are not uncommon here! At the Anchorage Museum, you can get an overview of Alaska's art and culture. Spend your free afternoon strolling along the Knik River to the Centennial Rose Garden. (F)
Day 8 Coastal Classic Train
Today you have to get up early. But it's worth it, because you'll enjoy breakfast on board the Coastal Classic train. Soon the train leaves Anchorage behind and winds its way along the towering peaks of the Chugach Range, which end directly in the Gulf of Alaska. Enjoy one of the most beautiful train rides in the world as breathtaking landscapes of glaciers, snow-capped peaks, and lakes pass by—and keep an eye out for wildlife. Around noon, your train will reach its destination, the picturesque port town of Seward on Resurrection Bay. Enjoy a free afternoon in Alaska's oldest town at the foot of snow-capped mountain giants. You will spend the next two nights in a lodge in Seward. (FA)
Day 9 Kenai Fjords National Park
Take a boat across Resurrection Bay and enter the wonderland of Kenai Fjords National Park. Dense primeval forests and glistening glaciers reach right down to the blue ocean. Otters and sea lions bask on ice floes, while puffins keep an eye out for tasty fish snacks. When an orca appears, the peace and quiet is over. Still exhilarated from your maritime photo safari, you end the day in Seward. (FMA)
Day 10 Hanging Glaciers
At the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, you can see an exciting cross-section of Alaska's wildlife: grizzly bears, black bears, moose, musk oxen, caribou, deer, and bald eagles. Afterwards, marvel at hanging glaciers and breathtaking scenery on a peaceful raft ride on Portage Creek. Finally, take part in a traditional salmon bake. At this outdoor meal, the salmon is first smoked and then grilled – a treat that will probably remain in your memory as the best meal of the trip! Tonight you will stay at a hotel in Anchorage. (FA)
Day 11 Farewell to Alaska
Today we fly back home from Anchorage Airport. (B)
Day 12 Arrival in Germany
