The Swell – a boutique ship with history

Built in Vancouver in 1912, the Swell was an important tugboat in British Columbia for decades. With its steam propulsion, it pulled coal, wood, and other goods through a region without a road network. In 1954, it was fitted with a diesel engine and remained in towage service until 1972, after which it passed into private ownership, even earning itself an "appearance" in the TV series The Beachcombers. In the 1980s, it temporarily returned to coastal service. In 2004, it underwent extensive conversion to a passenger ship, followed by further modernization in 2015 for even greater sustainability and comfort. Today, the Swell navigates the coastal waters of British Columbia and Alaska as a small expedition ship.
