Discover truly paradisiacal places on this authentic expedition through Indonesia's remote and little-known tropical islands. Swim with whale sharks in Kwatisore Bay, visit Komodo National Park —home to the legendary Komodo dragon—and discover Jacques Cousteau's "underwater nirvana" in Wakatobi National Park. With its turquoise waters and rainbow-colored corals, the Raja Ampat Archipelago is undoubtedly one of the best diving areas in the world. On your way from Bali to Madang (including connecting flight to Cairns), you will observe birds of paradise and many other endemic species. You can also expect to find interesting traces of World War II and inspiring visits to remote tribes and villages.

The Southeast Asian archipelago consists of around 18,000 islands and looks back on an eventful past. The first Europeans arrived in the 16th century. Attracted by the scent of nutmeg and cloves, Portuguese spice traders were the first to arrive, followed by Dutch colonial rule and Japanese occupation during World War II. Indonesia finally regained its independence in 1949.
Encounters with tropical wildlife on land and in water
Today, Indonesia is no longer known "only" for its spices, but is considered one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. As one of only 17 "megadiverse" countries, it is home to two of the 25 global biodiversity hotspots, 18 WWF Global 200 ecoregions, and 24 endemic bird areas recognized by BirdLife International. The forests, jungles, oceans, and waterways you will explore on this trip are home to over 25,000 species of flowering plants (40% of which are endemic), 1,592 bird species (430 endemic, 114 critically endangered), 1,051 reptile and amphibian species, 515 mammal species, and half of all fish species worldwide.
For botanists, ornithologists, and nature lovers, this expedition offers unique opportunities to discover exotic animal species and encounter rare wildlife on remote islands. A special highlight is the opportunity to take part in guided sea kayaking tours. In a kayak, you become part of the tranquil tropical scenery and often encounter curious locals who warmly invite you into their villages.
The individuality of this expedition-style sea voyage is underscored by your accommodation on the MS Heritage Adventurer, a comfortable expedition ship with a maximum of 140 passengers. To help you appreciate your discoveries in the unknown island world of Indonesia even more, natural scientists will be on board throughout the trip, inviting you to highly informative lectures and presentations and, of course, being available to answer your personal questions.

itinerary
Your journey to Denpasar in Bali is not included in your tour price, but the connecting flight from Madang to Cairns is.
Since our customers all have individual wishes for their trip, we are happy to book flights separately. Of course, the flights then become part of a secure package tour. We recommend an overnight stay in Denpasar to cushion any irregularities with your flight or lost luggage. We are happy to organize everything for you on request. Please contact us.
Day 1: Start of the trip in Denpasar, Bali
For centuries, Bali has captured the imagination of artists, writers, and travelers with its emerald green terraced rice fields set against the backdrop of the sacred Mount Agung volcano.
You will spend the first night of the expedition at your group hotel in Denpasar. In the evening, you will get to know your fellow travelers and the expedition team over dinner at the hotel.
Day 2: Experience Denpasar & Embarkation
After a relaxed breakfast, you will have time to explore the cultural and historical treasures of the Balinese capital.
In the afternoon, you will be transferred to the Heritage Adventurer, where you will be warmly welcomed on board by your captain and the expedition team before setting course for the island of Sumbawa.
Day 3: Sumbawa Island
Located east of its more famous sister island Lombok, the mountainous island of Sumbawa combines relaxed island life with spectacular volcanic ridges, terraced rice fields, enchanted jungles, and powder-sugar sandy beaches with impressive coral reefs and secluded bays waiting to be discovered. Historically divided into an eastern (Bimanese-speaking) and a western (Sumbawanese-speaking) part, this almost forgotten island presents itself as a fascinating contrast of luxurious villas and old wooden huts as well as untouched wilderness.
This day also gives you a very authentic insight into the cultural heritage of Sumbawa: you will meet the skilled craftswomen who create the famous, artistically woven ikat fabrics, watch traditional martial arts demonstrations, and take part in ancient tribal rituals.
Day 4: Komodo National Park
A protected area for the giant monitor lizard – the Komodo dragon: a wooded path leads to a viewpoint from which you can observe these prehistoric reptiles up close. The animals can grow up to 3 meters in length and weigh up to 135 kilograms. The surrounding forests are also home to Timor deer, the dragons' favorite prey, and elegant yellow-crested cockatoos.
Afterwards, a first snorkeling trip is planned at the beautiful Pink Beach – a truly exclusive diving experience that is often described as "swimming in an aquarium. "
Day 5: Wakatobi National Park
Today, an unforgettable snorkeling adventure awaits you in Wakatobi, once described by legendary underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau as "underwater nirvana. " As you explore the colorful coral walls, an impressive variety of marine life reveals itself. Underwater photographers can look forward to a fascinating macro world hidden among the corals.
Special encounters includecolorful frogfish, playful octopuses, marbled snake eels, cockatoo wrasse, fly gurnards, numerous crab species, and glowing anemones. A paradise for snorkelers and nature lovers!
Please note that the itinerary for trips in 2027 changes from day 5 onwards. We would be happy to send you a detailed itinerary.
Day 6: Buru Island
Rarely visited, Buru Island lies on the biogeographical border between Australia and Asia. An impressive number of the bird and mammal species living here are found exclusively on Buru, including ten endemic bird species, four endemic mammal species, and numerous near-endemic species.
This morning, you will explore these remote coastlines together with your experts and nature guides. Look forward to exciting forays through the forests in search of unique wildlife and rare species. During visits to traditional villages, we will also experience the warm hospitality of the local population firsthand.
Day 10: Misool Island
Once part of the Sultanate of Tidore during the Spice Wars, Misool is the second-largest island in the maritime paradise of Raja Ampat. The "Realm of the Four Kings" is named after its four main islands – and is also your gateway to a spectacular underwater world. Although once colonized by the Dutch, Misool has retained its cultural identity: traditional lifestyles, indigenous architecture, folk dances, and a deep-rooted respect for nature characterize life on the island.
On land, you will discover hidden caves in the midst of lush forests with rock carvings that are over 5,000 years old. Underwater, a colorful world of protected reefs opens up, home to dugongs, Napoleon fish, clownfish, manta rays, ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp, and pygmy seahorses, among others. Mysterious sea caves once served as cemeteries. During the day, you will explore a labyrinth of caves and waterways and hike to viewpoints where Raja Ampat lies at your feet in all its beauty. A day full of goosebump moments.
Day 11: Bomberai Peninsula
Today's itinerary includes a full day of exploration on the rarely visited Bomberai Peninsula, also known as the "Bird's Beak Peninsula" due to its location south of the Vogelkop Peninsula. Lush tropical rainforest covers the hills that rise up to the remote Kumafa Mountains. The turquoise waters along the rugged karst coast are famous for their abundance and diversity of tropical fish species.
Go ashore with your expedition team to discover the unique flora and fauna of this region. Afterwards, enjoy an unforgettable snorkeling experience among giant, colorful soft corals and countless reef fish attracted by the nutrient-rich currents of the underwater channels.
Days 14-15: Asmat villages
Ten thousand square miles of mangrove forests, bamboo, and sago palms have always protected the Asmat region from outsiders. At high tide, our ship navigates through the shallow channel of the Flamingo River and anchors near the village of Agats, the regional capital of Asmat.
A remote river world unfolds as Zodiacs carry you along narrow waterways lined with the intertwined branches of dense mangrove forests, home to Torresian Imperial Pigeons, sulfur-crested cockatoos, and bright red lorikeets.
Upstream, you will encounter villagers—shouting and singing, wearing elaborate war paint and traditional equipment—who paddle energetically in artistically carved canoes to escort you to the shore, where a warm welcome awaits.
A walk along elevated wooden walkways takes you to a cathedral with outstanding carvings and a museum with exhibits of totem poles, drums, face masks, shields, daggers, and skulls —a striking reminder that cannibalism and headhunting were once practiced by the ancestors of some of the villagers.
Asmat carving is known for its powerful lines and bold, expressive motifs and is considered by collectors and art historians to be one of the world's most important woodcarving traditions. Many of these works of art can be purchased directly from the village craftsmen.
Days 16 to 17: At sea
Relax on board after your adventures, attend a lecture, update your photos or travel journal, or enjoy the action from the wheelhouse with the captain, from the observation lounge, or from the pool area.
On day 16, we bid farewell to Indonesia and set sail for Papua New Guinea, while on day 17 we navigate through the labyrinth of reefs and islands in the Torres Strait, which connects the Coral Sea and Arafura Sea with the Gulf of Carpentaria. The best vantage points for this are the observation deck, the lounge, and the wheelhouse.
