Spitsbergen adventure in summer

It could hardly be more remote. Spitsbergen is located halfway between northern Norway and the North Pole. It is only about 1,000 km across the Arctic Ocean to the roof of the world.

Day 1: Arrival, sightseeing, and first night in Longyearbyen

Upon arrival at Longyearbyen Airport, you will be greeted by the friendly, English-speaking staff of our local partner agency. They will take you to your accommodation in town and then accompany you on a sightseeing tour of Longyearbyen. Located at 78° north, Longyearbyen is the northernmost town in the world and the administrative center of Svalbard. Soak up the special atmosphere and discover the sights of this small town, embellished with interesting stories and anecdotes from your guide. You can learn about the history of the settlement at the famous Svalbard Museum.

In the evening, you will discuss the program for the coming days with your guide.

Day 2-3: Boat trip to the Russian mining settlement of Pyramiden

Today, you will travel by boat from Longyearbyen to the Russian mining settlement of Pyramiden in the north of the Isfjord. The journey takes you past impressive cliffs, thousands of nesting birds, and huge glacier fronts, such as the Nordenskiöld Glacier, from which large chunks of ice occasionally break off and crash into the water with a loud roar.

At the height of the Soviet Union, over 1,000 people lived in Pyramiden. Today, the buildings are abandoned and all that remains are memories of the heyday of this former mining settlement. A Russian guide will tell you stories about life then and now and show you the cultural highlights of the settlement. After the tour, you will check into your accommodation and then set off on a leisurely private exploration tour before a typical local dinner is served in the evening.

The next morning, after your hearty Russian breakfast, you will start the day with a short hike off the beaten track and explore the breathtaking nature of Spitsbergen. After lunch outdoors, you will return by boat to Longyearbyen in the afternoon, where you will spend another night.

Day 4: A day at leisure

You are free to organize today as you wish. Take a stroll through the city to buy a few souvenirs, or let us advise you on other options and offers for a day trip.

Day 5: Out and about with the huskies

In the morning, you will meet your four-legged companions who will accompany you for the rest of the day. Even though the snow has melted in the valleys of Spitsbergen, nothing stands in the way of a dog sled ride on wheels instead of runners. Help harness the good-natured animals before exploring the Arctic tundra on the gravel roads of Spitsbergen.

The dog sled tour is conducted by a local partner with an English-speaking guide.

Overnight stay in Longyearbyen.

Day 6: Hike to one of the peaks near Longyearbyen

After spending the last few days admiring the imposing peaks in the surrounding area, today it's time to climb one of them. Equipped with hiking boots, drinks, food, and a warm jacket, you will set off on unknown paths, as there are no fixed hiking routes here. Depending on the weather conditions, you will walk across a glacier, search for fossils, and observe wild animals. Once you reach the summit, you will enjoy lunch with a magnificent view before making your descent back to the village.

Pyramids | 2 days and 1 night
Barentsburg and Pyramiden are Russian territories on Spitsbergen. Russia is currently subject to international sanctions.

Life on Spitsbergen is not a movie set, which is why the Spitsbergen government advises against visiting these two places. We still offer the tours, but only under strict safety measures and on our terms. The situation on the ground can change daily. In Barentsburg and Pyramiden, approximately 70% of the workforce is Ukrainian and 30% Russian, working in poor conditions and with little experience of avalanches, polar bears, and other challenges posed by the ice.

In addition, due to the coronavirus, there are currently not as many tourists on Spitsbergen as there were before the pandemic. Not all ships are sailing again, because cruise bookings are still not back to pre-pandemic levels.

Anyone traveling to unusual places affected by both the pandemic and war in these times must be flexible and always expect that the program will not work out as they had imagined.

For this reason, we can plan a visit to both places today, but we can never guarantee that it will actually take place.

Day 1: Pyramids – History and culture of the Russian mining settlement

The ship departs from Longyearbyen, passing bird colonies and glacier fronts. A Russian guide will be waiting for you after lunch and will introduce you to the history and cultural highlights, as well as the past and present life of the Russian ghost town. With this information in mind, you can experience the special atmosphere of this abandoned town in the evening during a walk or a short hike.

Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel Tulipan, Pyramids

Day 2: Pyramids – the ideal starting point for tours into the nature of Spitsbergen

A hearty breakfast will prepare you for today's hiking tour. Depending on the weather conditions and individual preferences, the guide will decide on the route. You will get to know the wonderful nature of Spitsbergen away from the marked trails. Depending on the route, lunch will be enjoyed together in nature or at the hotel. In the evening, you will return by boat to Longyearbyen.

Price and dates on request

Included in the price:

  • All transfers (including private airport transfer)
  • Private German-speaking guide with safety equipment

Pyramids | 3 days and 2 nights

Day 1: History and culture of the Russian mining settlement

The ship will take you from Longyearbyen, across the Isfjord, past bird colonies and glacier fronts to Pyramiden. A Russian guide will be waiting for you after lunch and will introduce you to the history and cultural highlights, as well as the past and present life of the Russian ghost town. With this information in mind, you can experience the special atmosphere of Pyramiden in the evening during a walk or a short hike.

Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel Tulipan, Pyramids

Day 2: Trekking tour to the Jotun Glacier

After breakfast, we set off on a full-day hiking tour to the Jotun Glacier. Depending on the weather conditions and the fitness level of the group, the guide will choose a longer or shorter route. In any case, you will be accompanied by wonderful views while you enjoy your lunch. Back in Pyramiden, you can relax and enjoy the rest of the day.

Dinner and overnight stay in Pyramiden

Day 3: Short hike and return to Longyearbyen

During a short hike, which the guide will select on the day depending on the weather conditions, you can enjoy a final lunch in nature or at the hotel in Pyramiden. The ship departs in the early evening for the return trip to Longyearbyen.
