Private Tour of Costa Rica & Panama | 6 Days / 5 Nights | Volcano Lodge at Arenal & Private Island in Bocas del Toro | English-speaking guide

What makes this trip special: The accommodations aren't just a stopover—they're the reason for the trip. At Arenal These lodges are among the best in Costa Rica—rainforest trails wind right through the grounds, and at Gardens and Tented Camp, access to volcanic hot springs is included. In Bocas del Toro You’ll find an adults-only private island with overwater villas and a reef just a few strokes away.

In between lie two completely different ecosystems: volcanic highland forests with toucans and howler monkeys on one side, and a Caribbean archipelago with dolphins, bioluminescence, and coral reefs on the other. All private, at your own pace, accompanied by English-speaking guides.

We recommend this trip if you want to combine nature and comfort without compromise. Before the trip, it’s worth spending a day or two in San José; after the trip, Panama City —with its Casco Viejo district and the Panama Canal—is a great place to visit. We’d be happy to arrange transfers, hotels, and day trips for you.

itinerary

6 days / 5 nights | Volcano Lodge on Lake Arenal & Private Island in Bocas del Toro

Day 1 | Arrival at the Arenal Volcano

Upon your arrival in Costa Rica, you will be met at the airport and taken to the lodge in Arenal Volcano National Park. The drive takes you through the central highlands, past coffee plantations and small villages, until the silhouette of Arenal comes into view above the treetops.

The afternoon is yours to enjoy. The lodge is nestled amid tropical gardens with a view of the volcanic cone. If you’d like, you can spend the time enjoying your first spa treatment or a yoga session among the trees. For dinner, the on-site restaurant serves dishes made with regional ingredients: plantains, black beans, and fresh fish from the Pacific.

Day 2 | Volcanic Trails and Hot Springs

In the morning, you’ll set out on a guided hike around Arenal. The trail leads across cooled lava fields from the 1968 eruption and through dense secondary forest that has grown over the lava in recent decades. Your guide will show you bromeliads, orchids, and, with a little luck, a quetzal in the branches. Alternatively, a trail leads over suspension bridges through the rainforest canopy, 60 meters above the forest floor.

In the afternoon, you’ll return to the lodge. At Gardens and the Tented Camp, the volcanically heated hot springs on the resort grounds invite you to linger—the water ranges in temperature from 34 to 41 °C and is nestled amid tropical vegetation. In Springs, you can relax instead in your villa’s private plunge pool. Those who wish to explore the surroundings further can book a wildlife walk with a naturalist. Sloths, toucans, and monkeys are among the regular sightings here.

Day 3 | Adventure and Transfer to Panama

The morning offers time for one final activity in the Arenal region: a hike to a waterfall through the rainforest, a river cruise through the lowland forests, or a visit to a local community that offers a glimpse into rural life in Costa Rica.

Next, the transfer to Panama begins. From the lodge, you’ll head to the domestic terminal in San José, either by car or via a short domestic flight from La Fortuna. The flight to Bocas del Toro takes about an hour. At the airport on Isla Colón, a boat transfer to the private island will be waiting for you. The trip across the calm Caribbean waters takes about 20 minutes.

In the evening, you’ll check into your overwater villa or bamboo treehouse. The water beneath the terrace shimmers in the last light of day as the staff serves you a welcome cocktail.

Day 4 | Arrival in the Caribbean and first explorations

Your first full day on the private island begins to the rhythm of the Caribbean: no alarm clock, no set schedule. Breakfast is served on your terrace over the water, pelicans glide by, and the reef below you slowly comes into view as the morning sun illuminates the seabed.

If you’re looking to get active, you have plenty of options: snorkeling right from the dock, a spin on a stand-up paddleboard, or a kayaking tour through the surrounding mangrove channels. In the afternoon, the spa offers treatments featuring Caribbean ingredients. At sunset, the waterfront bar opens. Dinner combines Caribbean flavors with fresh, locally sourced seafood.

Day 5 | Islands and Underwater Life

Today’s itinerary includes a half-day boat trip through the archipelago. The boat will take you to the Zapatillas Islands, two uninhabited islands in the national park featuring white-sand beaches and pristine coral reefs. While snorkeling over Coral Cay, you’ll see rays and barracudas gliding through the warm water. With a little luck, bottlenose dolphins will accompany the boat on the way back.

The afternoon is yours to enjoy as you wish. There are plenty of options: a visit to Red Frog Beach, named after the tiny red poison-dart frogs that live in the undergrowth. Or a trip to Starfish Beach, where orange starfish lie in the shallow water. Those who stay on the island can use the pool or enjoy a treatment at the spa.

After dark, on certain evenings, you can observe bioluminescence. By kayak or boat, you glide across the water, which glows blue-green with every movement.

Day 6 | Last day on the island and departure

Your final morning on the private island is once again all about tranquility. Breakfast over the water, one last glimpse of the reef, perhaps a dip into the sea from the terrace. The island bids you farewell just as it welcomed you: without haste.

You’ll return to Bocas Town on Isla Colón by boat. From there, you can reach the airport for your connecting flight or continue your journey on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Costa Rica and then on to Panama?

International flights typically arrive in San José, the capital of Costa Rica. From there, you’ll be transferred to the lodge near the Arenal Volcano by car (about 3 hours) or via an optional short flight from La Fortuna (25 minutes). To continue your journey to Panama, you’ll fly from San José to Bocas del Toro in about an hour. You will be met at the airport on Isla Colón and taken by boat to the private island in about 20 minutes. We are happy to book the flights for you.

Do I need a visa for Costa Rica and Panama?

Citizens of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland do not need a visa for either country for stays of up to 90 days. A passport valid for at least six months is required. Travelers of other nationalities should check the entry requirements with the relevant embassy. Current information is available from the Federal Foreign Office (https://www.auswärtiges-amt.de).

What kind of accommodation in Costa Rica is best for me?

There are three accommodation options at Arenal, all of which belong to the same operator and share the same grounds. Nayara Springs is ideal for couples who value complete privacy. Each villa has its own thermal pool. The resort is for adults only. Nayara Gardens is the best choice for families or travelers who appreciate a larger pool area and multiple restaurants. Nayara Tented Camp is designed for those seeking a rainforest experience in glamping style without sacrificing comfort. Both Gardens and Tented Camp are family-friendly. All three properties offer access to the same activities and thermal springs.

Is the resort in Panama also suitable for families with children?

The Nayara Bocas del Toro is an adults-only resort and therefore not open to children. If you are traveling with children, we recommend Nayara Gardens or Nayara Tented Camp for the Costa Rica portion of your trip, and we can discuss alternative accommodations in Panama together.

When is the best time to visit Costa Rica and Panama?

Both countries can be visited year-round. The dry season, from December through April, is considered the peak season, with the least amount of rainfall. During the rainy season, from May through November, it rains more frequently, usually in short, heavy afternoon showers. The vegetation is particularly lush during this time, and there are fewer travelers on the road. Rain is to be expected year-round in the Arenal region, as it is one of the wettest areas in Costa Rica.

Do I need to be particularly athletic to participate in these activities?

No. Hiking in the Arenal area is possible on well-maintained trails and requires only a basic level of fitness. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the trails can become slippery when wet. In Bocas del Toro, water activities (snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding) are suitable for beginners. All activities are optional.

How does the transfer from Costa Rica to Panama work?

On the third day of your trip, you’ll leave the lodge at Arenal and drive to the domestic terminal in San José. Alternatively, a short flight from La Fortuna cuts the travel time from about three hours to 25 minutes. From San José, you’ll fly to Bocas del Toro in one hour. You’ll be met at the airport on Isla Colón and taken by boat to the private island in about 20 minutes. All transfers are arranged.

Can I extend or modify my trip?

Of course. Since this is a private tour, we’ll tailor the duration and itinerary to your specific preferences. Possible additions include extra nights at one of the destinations, a stop in San Jose or Panama City before or after the trip, or combining it with other destinations in Central America. Please feel free to contact us.
