Day 3: Hike to Pacaya Volcano and horseback riding
A private transfer will take you to Pacaya Volcano.
The Pacaya volcano is located just outside the capital Guatemala City and, at an altitude of 2,552 m, is one of Guatemala's three active volcanoes. After a period of dormancy, it has been active again since 1965, sometimes more dramatically than at other times! From Antigua, it is about an hour's drive to Pacaya National Park (which was declared a national park in 2001) and the starting point of the hike in the small village of San Francisco de Sales.
The approximately 2-mile trail is relatively steep but well maintained, climbing steadily through farmland and pine forests before arriving at an exposed ridge offering panoramic views of Pacaya's smoking black cone, miles of ancient blackened lava flows, and the volcanoes to the north around Antigua and Lake Atitlan.
The hike continues into the barren lunar landscape of lava flows, where you can roast marshmallows in hot spots to make Guatemalan-style s'mores! You will enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the crater from a distance (national park regulations do not allow climbing to the top of the crater). (This service is on a private basis.)
A private transfer will take you to the town of San Miguel Escobar. Upon arrival, two local peanut farmers will show you how to make peanut butter from scratch. Enjoy a delicious homemade tortilla with your own handmade peanut butter.
At a nearby coffee hacienda, you can enjoy a 2-hour horseback ride through the coffee fields.
Overnight stay at Hotel Casa Santo Domingo (FM)
Day 4: Chocolate workshop & onward journey to Lake Atitlán
Learn about cocoa beans in a personalized workshop where you can work with the kernels, brew, roast, and grind them to make chocolate as you know it. Become a master chocolatier and make your own pralines, which you can enjoy just an hour later.

Overnight stay at Hotel Atitlan (B)
Day 5: Kayaking tour, Tzununa hike, and San Juan Village tour
After breakfast, your tour guide will pick you up in the lobby of your hotel to take you by boat to the starting point of the kayaking tour. Paddle for about 45 minutes along the charming peninsulas and admire the beautiful gardens on the shore.
After kayaking, you will begin the hike to Tzununa. The north shore of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala cannot be reached by road, so you will hike along ancient trails that have been used by the Kaqchikel Maya for centuries. You will observe villagers going about their daily lives and see some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. (This service is on a private basis.)
Your tour guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel. Private boat transfer to the village of San Juan. San Juan is famous for its naive art galleries, murals, and naturally dyed textiles. This town is an example of organization and tourism in the highlands. Its beauty and cooperatives have made it a perfect village.

In 1979, UNESCO declared the colonial city of La Antigua Guatemala a World Heritage Site, making it a recognized treasure of exceptional value in the eyes of the world.
