Fluke & Fur – Antarctic Marine Mammals

Scientific expedition to observe whales and seals around the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands

Look over the shoulders of renowned marine biologists at work

from/to Buenos Aires

11 days (10 nights)

MS World Voyager

11-day scientific expedition to Antarctic marine mammals from/to Buenos Aires, including the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, accompanied by renowned marine biologist Ari Friedlaender

On this intensive expedition to see the marine mammals of Antarctica, you will be accompanied by renowned marine biologist Ari Friedlaender, founder of the Friedlaender Lab, a highly respected marine mammal research group at the University of California. On this route to the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands, co-developed by Friedlaender, there are excellent opportunities to observe migrating whales – especially minke, humpback, and fin whales. You will also see other iconic Antarctic animals such as seals, elephant seals, and penguins.

A research assistant at Happywhale is also on board. This citizen science project invites you to identify individual whales yourself and thus contribute to research and the protection of these animals. In workshops and in-depth discussions with renowned scientists, you will learn to better understand the ecology and underwater behavior of whales. You will feel even closer to the giants of the sea when you listen to mysterious whale songs coming from the depths of the ocean through portable hydrophones in the Zodiac – sometimes melodic, sometimes eerie. You will not only be a humble observer, but you can also actively contribute to the protection of the majestic marine mammals of Antarctica by participating in data collection in the on-board Science Hub.

This ship expedition offers you the full "classic" Antarctic experience: depending on the weather, you will visit exciting places on the Antarctic Peninsula such as Cuverville Island, whose rocks at the entrance to the Errera Channel are covered with colorful lichens and mosses, or Charlotte Bay, which Adrien de Gerlache discovered in the 1890s. Neko Harbor and Danco Island are further options for landings with Zodiacs. The South Shetland Islands, with their imposing mountains and glaciers, are home to gentoo, chinstrap, and Adélie penguins, as well as leopard seals, Weddell seals, and numerous seabirds. If conditions permit, you can set foot on the active volcanic island of Deception Island or observe Wilson's storm petrels, kelp gulls, snow petrels, Antarctic terns, and skuas on Half Moon Island.

Literally dive into Antarctica – you can do this (voluntarily, of course) with the traditional Polar Plunge. You can also explore the landscape and geography actively and up close with stand-up paddleboarding, a paddle tour, or kayaking ( limited offers at an additional cost, so please indicate your interest when booking). You can also set off on guided hikes across ice, snow, and rocks. The tours across the terrain – without trails, of course – last up to three hours.

On this expedition to the marine mammals of Antarctica, with deep insights into the otherwise hidden underwater world, the soul of Antarctica opens up to you – and you actively take responsibility for the unique life in one of the last untouched wildernesses on Earth. You will observe marine biologists at their important work, actively support the scientists, and engage in deep exchanges throughout the trip. route

Your route to the marine mammals in Antarctica

itinerary

Day 1: Start of the trip in Buenos Aires

You will spend the first night of your trip in this South American metropolis before setting off on your expedition. Buenos Aires welcomes you with lively Argentine culture, European architecture, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Buenos Aires cityscape from above
End of the World sign in Ushuaia

Day 2: Flight to Ushuaia & Embarkation on the MS World Voyager

After an early breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the airport and fly on a private charter plane to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world on Tierra del Fuego.

After landing, a driver will take you directly from the airport to the city center, where you will have time to explore this charming port city on your own. Finally, you will make your way to the agreed meeting point near the pier, where you will board the MS World Voyager shortly thereafter.

In the late afternoon , it's finally time to cast off and set course for the historic Beagle Channel, which runs through the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the southernmost tip of South America. There is a palpable excitement in the air: the next land you will see will be the untouched wilderness of Antarctica.

Day 3: Day at sea – south through the Drake Passage

Many travelers experience the 800-kilometer journey through the Drake Passage as a kind of rite of passage. In this legendary waterway, you will cross the Antarctic Convergence, where cold northward-flowing Antarctic waters meet warmer southward-flowing sub-Antarctic currents. This convergence creates a particularly nutrient-rich environment and thus an ideal hunting ground for whales and other marine mammals. So keep your binoculars handy: your expedition team will announce any whale sightings immediately.

The day at sea is an excellent opportunity to get to know the team of visiting scientists traveling with us. Among them is Ari Friedlaender, co-developer of this itinerary. Several members of his team from the Friedlaender Lab are also on board—all of them world-leading experts on the behavior and ecology of marine mammals, especially whales. You will also meet a research assistant from the Happywhale platform, a project that allows travelers to upload their whale photos to identify species and even individual animals.

Day 4: Day at sea heading for Antarctica

The second day of your crossing of the Drake Passage offers the perfect opportunity to attend various specialist lectures on the polar region – as intensive preparation for close encounters with marine mammals in the coming days.

Take the opportunity to visit the Science Hub on Deck 4 – a central part of your expedition. Spend time on deck and keep an eye out for whales. With every kilometer you get closer to the Antarctic Peninsula, the chances of sightings increase. Don't forget to upload your whale photos to the Happywhale platform!

Days 5 to 7: In the world of whales and seals off the Antarctic Peninsula

This travel season offers the best opportunities to observe different species of whales along the Antarctic Peninsula. After the ice recedes in October and November, the food chain begins to rebuild itself. Whales, seals, and other marine mammals are attracted to these nutrient-rich waters, especially because of the krill. By February and March, they have fed intensively, are full and relaxed, and are easier to observe.

In addition to zodiac and paddle excursions, you will spend a lot of time on the outer decks and other vantage points of the ship observing and photographing the fascinating wildlife.

Your route takes you through the most important habitats of marine mammals, including Gerlache Strait and remote, ice-filled bays. Over the next three days, we plan to explore whale hotspots such as Charlotte Bay, Portal Point, Graham Passage, Errera Channel, Cuverville Island, Andvord Bay, Fournier Bay, and Dallmann Bay.

Numerous whales are frequently sighted in these areas, including minke whales, humpback whales, fin whales, orcas, and the rare deep-diving Arnoux beaked whale.

This itinerary is the only one that uses hydrophones – underwater microphones for detecting and recording sounds below the water's surface. Scientists from the Friedlaender Lab accompany you on Zodiac trips and paddling programs to deploy hydrophones and study the behavior of marine mammals. Special attention is paid to the songs of the whales. Four scientists accompany the guests in the Zodiacs, with two groups sharing one hydrophone. With a little luck, you can hear the mysterious sounds of the whales below the sea surface through the loudspeakers on board.

These activities allow you to experience marine biology up close. You interact directly with scientists who are collecting and analyzing data in real time—both on the water and using digital tools.

In addition to this exclusive citizen science program, you will experience many other iconic Arctic impressions on this expedition: you will travel through the natural habitat of penguins and seals, marvel at the enormous dimensions of glaciers, snow-capped mountains, and icebergs, and set foot on the Antarctic mainland during various landings. For the most courageous, there is also the Polar Plunge (ice bathing).

Day 8: Antarctic wildlife around the South Shetland Islands

To cap off your journey to see Antarctic marine mammals, you will hopefully be able to observe southern elephant seals off the remote South Shetland Islands. In addition, there are often touching encounters with fin whales here.

As you explore this geologically and historically interesting archipelago, several landings are expected to provide further opportunities to experience the unique Antarctic wildlife up close.

Your arrival in March gives you the rare opportunity to visit special expedition sites such as Hannah Point, which is considered a protected area during the rest of the year. Huge populations of elephant seals andsouthern giant petrels live here.

Day 9: Day at sea – Northward through the Drake Passage

Today marks the start of your return journey through the Drake Passage. Make the most of your day at sea to spend more time with the scientists from the Friedlaender Lab or attend one of the fascinating lectures on the polar region.

Day 10: Your last day at sea

Today is your last chance to visit the new Science Hub on the MS World Voyager and actively participate in a citizen science project. By doing so, you will be actively supporting the protection of marine mammals.

Sir David Attenborough probably speaks from your heart with these words:
"No one will protect something they don't care about. And no one will care about something they've never experienced."

Day 11: Farewell to the ship & return flight to Buenos Aires

In the morning, you will arrive at the port of Ushuaia and disembark after breakfast. You will drive to the airport to return to Buenos Aires on a charter flight. Your thoughts will surely wander back to Antarctica with gratitude and humility – and to the impressive marine mammals that you have been able to get so close to over the last few days, something that few people are privileged to experience.

City of Ushuaia

The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.

  • Discuss observations and analyze samples collected during scientific Zodiac excursions together with other participants.

Note: The Science Hub is also open for self-guided exploration when staff are otherwise occupied.

Your Antarctic marine mammal experts on this voyage

Ari Friedlaender | Friedlaender Lab

Ari Friedlaender, founder of the renowned Friedlaender Lab —a leading marine mammal research group at the University of California—has been studying baleen whales in Antarctica since 1997.

Friedlaender, who helped develop this itinerary, and his team use state-of-the-art biotelemetry technologies such as drones, suction cup sensors, and biopsy tools to study whale behavior, health, and migrations. Their work contributes significantly to the future of whale conservation.

During this expedition, Friedlaender and his team are collecting new data on local whale populations and sharing both historical and current satellite data from tags attached in previous seasons. At the same time, they are actively tracking whales in the region.

This valuable information is presented in daily summaries and is available in the Science Hub on Deck 4.

Research Associate, Happywhale

A research assistant from Happywhale will accompany this trip. Happywhale is a scientific web platform where users can upload photos of whale flukes—which have unique markings—to identify individual whales and track their movements.

After a brief introduction by the Happywhale expert, you can actively contribute to the collaborative digital database and learn how your observations help to better understand whale migration patterns.

Included activities

ZODIAC TRIPS

Zodiacs—sturdy inflatable boats—are at the heart of polar expedition exploration. They take you to places that are inaccessible to ships, allow you to explore remote coastlines and shallow bays, and offer the chance to spot wildlife. Your expedition team ensures safe and comfortable embarkation and disembarkation, while your Zodiac drivers provide exciting insights and bring the landscape to life.

HIKING

Hikes in Antarctica are freely planned and supervised by your team of experts. At each landing point, boundaries or paths are established within which you can move freely. During your hike, guides are available to enrich your experience with knowledge about the wildlife, history, and geography of the region.

LECTURES

Attend lectures by leading polar experts and learn more about the region's fascinating history, biology, ornithology, glaciology, and geology—as well as many other interesting topics.

POLAR PLUNGE

This unique ritual takes place only once per expedition and offers you the opportunity to safely jump into the ice-cold waters of Antarctica—under the watchful supervision of your team and, of course, in front of the cameras of your fellow travelers!

PHOTOGRAPHY

Documenting your trip is not just about taking memories home with you. Photography also sharpens your eye for the distinctive features of Antarctica. Our photographer guide will help you improve your skills and perfectly capture the beauty of the polar regions.

Additional paid options

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING

A combination of surfboard and kayak, stand-up paddleboarding offers you a particularly direct perspective on Antarctica. Excursions take place in small groups in calm bays and harbors in good weather conditions and are accompanied by a safety Zodiac. A one-time stand-up paddleboarding tour can be booked in advance in one of two priority groups. Additional excursions can be booked on board, with group allocation determined by lottery.

Paddling excursions

If you are interested in kayaking but are looking for a less demanding alternative to sea kayaking, a paddle excursion is just the thing for you! The stable sit-on-top kayaks are ideal for participants with little or no kayaking experience. Small groups paddle on calm days, always accompanied by experienced guides who provide instruction and help you connect with the polar marine environment. A single excursion can be booked in advance in one of two priority groups. Additional tours can be booked on board, with places allocated by lottery.

sea kayaking

Imagine gliding through an Antarctic bay, surrounded by majestic icebergs and glaciers. A sea kayaking tour offers an intense opportunity to explore the surroundings from the water. A small group of kayakers can paddle several times during the trip – as an alternative to shore excursions or Zodiac rides.

The number of kayaking opportunities depends on weather conditions, and tours only take place when the sea is calm. Previous kayaking experience is required, and participants must be able to perform a wet exit (leaving the kayak in the water). Beginners who are interested in kayaking should take part in the paddling excursion instead.

Important information:

  • All paid activities must be booked in advance.

  • We recommend booking early, as places fill up quickly.

  • These activities are not included in the tour price and must be booked before departure.

Possible destinations during your expedition trip

DISCOVERIES IN EXTREMELY REMOTE REGIONS

In the remote areas of Antarctica, the sea, ice, and weather determine the route and details of your expedition. Your expedition team will adapt the itinerary to the conditions on site. The following locations are examples of possible experiences – whether on board the ship, during a Zodiac ride, or during a landing.

ANTARCTIC PENINSULA

CHARLOTTE BAY

Charlotte Bay was discovered by Adrien de Gerlache, leader of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition from 1897 to 1899. It was named in honor of the fiancée of Georges Lecointe, the deputy expedition leader.

Cierva Cove

This bay impresses with huge icebergs and a spectacular glacier backdrop. The enormous glacier wall calves regularly, creating impressive ice floes. Seals can often be seen on the ice floes here, while later in the season humpback whales search for food in the icy waters.

Cuverville Island

This steep island rises at the entrance to the Errera Channel and is covered with colorful lichens and mosses. At its northern end is a large colony of gentoo penguins. Depending on when you visit, you can watch the penguins build nests, incubate eggs, or care for their chicks.

Dallmann Bay

The flat seabed west of East Dallmann Bay has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest by the National Science Foundation. It is one of only two known locations near Palmer Station that are suitable for studying fish and other benthic organisms. Zodiac rides and paddling activities (weather permitting) take place outside the protected area. Scientists on board may have permits for studies and will share their findings upon returning to the ship.

Danco Island

This small, dome-shaped island is a paradise for gentoo penguins and offers breathtaking views of the Errera Channel as well as excellent opportunities for Zodiac rides.

Errera Channel

This channel between Rongé Island and the west coast of Graham Land was discovered during the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897–1899 and named after Leo Errera, a well-known botanist at the University of Brussels and member of the Belgica Commission.

Fournier Bay

Fournier Bay, 13 km long and 4.8 km wide, is located on the northeast coast of Anvers Island. It was probably first sighted by Dallmann's German expedition (1873–1874) and later mapped by the French Antarctic expedition (1903–1905) under Jean-Baptiste Charcot. Charcot named the bay after Vice Admiral Ernest Fournier of the French Navy.

Graham Passage

This passage, lined with imposing ice cliffs, separates Murray Island from the west coast of Graham Land. It offers not only spectacular scenery but also excellent opportunities for observing marine mammals.

Neko Harbor

In this bay, located deep in Andvord Bay and once used by the floating whaling station Neko, only a few traces remain to remind us of this era. Sometimes, resident gentoo penguins use whale vertebrae as windbreaks for their nests.

Paradise Harbor

A spacious natural harbor surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and imposing ice cliffs. Icebergs regularly break off from the glaciers here, making it an ideal place for seals, penguins, and seabirds. The Argentine research station Almirante Brown is also located here.

Portal Point

This striking cape on the northeast side of the Reclus Peninsula offers a fantastic view of Charlotte Bay. Here lie the remains of the British hut Cape Reclus, which was used for research purposes from 1956 to 1958. The cape is also a popular habitat for fur seals and Weddell seals, as well as numerous seabirds such as skuas, giant petrels, and blue-eyed cormorants.

Wilhelmina Bay

This bay, affectionately known as "Whale-mina Bay," is famous for its large population of humpback whales. The protected, calm waters provide the perfect backdrop for spectacular natural spectacles, including the famous bubble net feeding, in which whales use air bubbles to catch swarms of krill.

South Shetland Islands

Aitcho Islands

These small islands are located at the northern entrance to the English Strait. Colonies of gentoo penguins and chinstrap penguins can be found here. Southern elephant seals and fur seals also often rest on the beaches.

Bransfield Strait

This strait separates the South Shetland Islands from the Antarctic Peninsula. Around 200 years ago, the islands were stripped of their seal populations, but today they are once again home to a wide variety of wildlife, including minke whales, humpback whales, orcas, leopard seals, crabeater seals, and elephant seals.

Deception Island

This circular volcanic island is one of the most impressive landscapes in Antarctica. The entrance to the sheltered caldera is through the narrow passage known as Neptune's Bellows. Historically, the island was used for whaling and scientific research – relics of the whaling stations can still be seen today. The black volcanic beaches and the rising steam from geothermal springs create a dramatic backdrop.

Half Moon Island

This crescent-shaped island was already known to seal hunters in 1821. Today, it is a protected natural paradise that provides a habitat for numerous Antarctic birds such as chinstrap penguins, storm petrels, kelp gulls, razorbills, and skuas.

Hannah Point

Located on the south coast of Livingston Island, Hannah Point is known for its colonies of chinstrap and gentoo penguins—and, with a little luck, breeding macaroni penguins.
