Follow in the footsteps of Sir Ernest Shackleton on this classic Antarctic expedition—from the tranquil ice fields of the deep south to the sub-Antarctic wildlife paradise of South Georgia.

Experience the pure thrill of adventure as you navigate eastward and venture as far as possible into the Weddell Sea —where Shackleton's Endurance met its fate. In the summer of 1914, the pioneer Shackleton sailed into the Weddell Sea with his 27-member crew to attempt the first overland crossing of the Antarctic continent. But shortly before the planned starting point, their ship, the Endurance, became trapped in pack ice, and it would take 26 unimaginably hard months before the men could finally be rescued in South Georgia after a true odyssey.

On your "modern" expedition, you will also follow the course of the James Caird about the Scotia Sea to South Georgia, where Shackleton's journey came to a remarkable conclusion after 17 days in an open rowboat – namely with the legendary Shackleton Walk: The men, already completely exhausted, crossed in 36 hours with a 51-kilometer hike South Georgia. If you want to experience the truly immense hardships endured by the pioneers, we recommend taking part in the complete Shackleton trek. from King Haakon Bay on the south coast of South Georgia to the ruined whaling station at Stromness in the north (optional activity, extra cost, unfortunately currently fully booked). Very few Antarctic expeditions offer the opportunity for this immersive experience.

Of course, on this cruise you will also experience many classic "Antarctic moments" such as the deafening calving of glaciers and penguins happily jumping into the icy sea. You will also experience complete silence and the feeling of having reached the end of the world. You will get up close to the fascinating landscape of water, ice, snow, and rock and the iconic wildlife of seals, penguins, and whales on Zodiac excursions and hikes. Get even closer on sea kayaking tours (optional, extra charge) – or if you dare to take the polar plunge (ice bathing).

As you follow Shackleton's route, your team of experts will provide valuable insights into Antarctic geology and ecology, wildlife viewing tips, photography advice, and stories from Shackleton's epic adventure, giving your journey a highly informative framework.

City of Ushuaia
Day 1: Arrival in Ushuaia

You will receive a warm welcome at Ushuaia Airport and travel to the hotel together with your fellow travelers. If you are already in Ushuaia, please make your own way to the group hotel, where check-in is possible from 3 p.m. Your tour guide will be in the hotel lobby until 7 p.m. to hand out luggage tags. You can also register there for tomorrow's optional Lake Escondido tour before embarkation. You will also receive all the information you need about embarkation and tips on the restaurant scene and shopping opportunities in Ushuaia.

If you arrive at the hotel after 7 p.m., you will find a welcome package at the check-in desk. Please also come to the hospitality desk between 8 and 10 a.m. the next morning.

The rest of the time is yours to spend as you wish. All meals today are at your own expense.

Day 2: Embarkation after the optional Lake Escondido tour

Enjoy your breakfast this morning and then check out of the hotel. Please ensure that your carry-on luggage is clearly labeled with a luggage tag containing your name and cabin number. Bring your carry-on luggage to the hotel reception before or at the latest when you check out. It will be stored there and transported directly to the port, where it will be prepared for customs clearance and then brought to your cabin before you board. Please keep your valuables and personal belongings with you throughout the day.

Participants in today's Lake Escondido tour should meet in the hotel lobby at 8:45 a.m. The tour offers an unforgettable panoramic drive through wide glacial valleys, evergreen and deciduous forests, waterfalls, and rivers—amidst the impressive expanse of the Andes. You will leave Ushuaia heading northeast from Tierra del Fuego, cross moorlands, and reach the Garibaldi Pass, which is only accessible via a winding road and leads you to a viewpoint. From there, you will have spectacular views of Lago Escondido and, weather permitting, Lago Fagnano. You will then drive down to the coast of Lago Fagnano and visit a local estancia. There you will enjoy a typical Tierra del Fuego lamb barbecue. After some free time, you will return to Ushuaia for embarkation.

Alternatively, you can plan your day individually and meet for the transfer to the ship in the afternoon either in the hotel lobby or at a parking lot near the pier. (You will receive exact details from the tour guide at the hotel.)

Welcome aboard

Once you are on board, you will have time to settle into your cabin before important mandatory safety and introductory briefings take place. As the ship leaves port, gather on deck and begin your ship expedition with a fantastic view of Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego.

In the evening, you will get to know your fellow travelers and the friendly expedition and crew team at the welcome dinner.

Day 3 to 4: Crossing the Drake Passage

Enjoy the comforts of life on board during these two days at sea! Discover the gym, wellness center, and well-stocked library—everything is at your disposal. Your expedition team will give a series of exciting lectures on the history, wildlife, and environment of Antarctica to further enrich your journey. You will also be asked to pick up your Muck Boots (sturdy rubber boots) and attend important briefings on animal observation etiquette and safety in the Zodiacs – in preparation for your first landing in Antarctica.

On the fourth day, excitement is palpable as the ship approaches the South Shetland Islands and the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Everyone gathers on the observation decks to catch their first glimpse of an iceberg. South of the Antarctic Convergence, the ocean reveals a whole new side of itself: surrounded by leaping penguins and imposing icebergs, this is a moment that will remain etched in your memory forever. If time and weather permit, you may even make your first landing in Antarctica in the late afternoon.

Days 5 to 7: Discoveries along the Antarctic Peninsula

It is almost impossible to describe the feeling of arriving in Antarctica. Seeing the first iceberg and taking a deep breath of what is probably the freshest and clearest air on Earth is an experience you will remember forever.

Over the following days, you will explore the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. There are a variety of options available to you. Your experienced expedition team, which has traveled to this region countless times, will use their expertise to plan your itinerary day by day, always based on the current weather and ice conditions and the best opportunities for wildlife viewing.

During your stay on the peninsula, you will usually go ashore or take Zodiac trips twice a day. Dress warmly before boarding a Zodiac to cruise along imposing ice walls or between grounded icebergs – always on the lookout for whales, seals, or penguins jumping through the water. The Zodiacs will also take you ashore, where you can visit penguin colonies and discover historic huts.

A wide range of activities on water and land

On land, you can go hiking —whether along pebbly beaches or snow-covered mountain ridges, which offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the ice-covered sea. Optionally, you can paddle a sea kayak through the Arctic Ocean (please book in advance, subject to a fee) or even venture into the polar plunge.

In addition to zodiac rides and shore excursions, you may also take boat trips through dramatic straits between offshore islands and the mainland, or linger in picturesque bays to marvel at sculptural icebergs and photograph the spectacular landscape. Enjoy this time in the panoramic lounge area or visit the ship's bridge, depending on the captain's decision. Keep your ears open for the cracking and deep rumbling of calving glaciers. Take a quiet moment to let the wonder of this unique white continent sink in.

Day 8: In the Weddell Sea, following in the footsteps of Sir Ernest Shackleton

The famous Weddell Sea is at the heart of the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, whose footsteps you can follow here. In the summer of 1914, Shackleton sailed into the Weddell Sea with his 27-strong crew to attempt the first overland crossing of the Antarctic continent. But shortly before the planned starting point, their ship, the Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and all hope of realizing the plan was lost. What followed was a completely unexpected, extraordinary odyssey that made Shackleton's expedition one of the most famous stories in polar exploration.

The remote and difficult-to-access Weddell Sea is considered a particularly sought-after destination among polar travelers. Your journey begins at the northernmost point of the Antarctic Peninsula, in the barren yet beautiful Antarctic Sound. In this rarely visited region, volcanic peaks tower above penguin colonies, and wave-shaped icebergs glide through deep sea channels.

The further east you travel, the stronger the spirit of expedition becomes: your captain will attempt to venture as far as possible into the Weddell Sea. This region is famous for its enormous tabular icebergs and extensive sea ice fields, which attract an impressive array of wildlife, including crabeater seals, Weddell seals, and numerous seabirds. On the outer deck, you can observe petrels, prions, and Antarctic cormorants, attracted by the abundant krill.

As you travel, it is worth taking a moment to reflect: you are sailing on historic waters. Not far from here, on March 5, 2022, the wreck of the Endurance was discovered – almost completely intact. The researchers aboard the polar research vessel S.A. Agulhas II were astonished to find the ship just 6.4 km south of the position estimated by Captain Worsley in 1915.

Day 9: Elephant Island

Today, your expedition ship sets course for Elephant Island—that remote outpost where 22 of Shackleton's men survived several icy winter months under the protection of two upturned boats.

In the morning, your expedition team invites you to the lecture room to hear the impressive story of Shackleton and his crew: they were trapped in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea for nine months and spent another six months on drifting sea ice before leaving the ice behind in a desperate escape attempt in three open boats. They battled wind, currents, high seas, and treacherous drift ice for almost a week until they finally reached land on Elephant Island, an ice-covered outpost of the South Shetland Islands, after 497 days at sea.

The plan is to sail along Cape Valentine, where the men first went ashore, followed by a continuation along the coast to the exposed Cape Point Wild. There, Shackleton's 22 men endured several merciless winter months under upturned boats, hoping for rescue. Weather permitting, a Zodiac trip or landing at historic Point Wild is planned.

Days 10 to 11: Days at sea on the Scotia Sea

After an exciting program full of excursions and activities in Antarctica, you can now relax and enjoy the quieter days at sea as you set course for South Georgia.

On your journey, you will cross the Scotia Sea – the same route taken by Shackleton and five of his men when they set out from Elephant Island in an open wooden boat, the James Caird, to seek help. For 17 days, they sailed through these dangerous seas into the unknown until they finally arrived safely at King Haakon Bay on the west coast of South Georgia. To this day, this voyage is considered one of the greatest feats of navigation and survival in polar history.

During the crossing, the lecture program continues on board with entertaining presentations on South Georgia's wildlife, geology, and history. Or you can take the opportunity to relax with a leisurely lunch, a visit to the gym, or a good book from the polar library.

Fantastic wildlife

The Scotia Sea is known for its abundance of wildlife—with a little luck, you may spot fin, humpback, and blue whales. Keep an eye out for the elusive orcas that roam these waters. The outside deck offers great photo opportunities as Cape petrels and shearwaters circle overhead and albatrosses glide elegantly through the spray.

And, of course, Shackleton and his legendary journey are ever-present:

"There was almost always a storm. Our boat was so small and the sea so vast that our sail often hung limply in the lee between two waves. Then we climbed the next wall and felt the full fury of the storm as the breaking water raged around us in woolly white spray."
– Ernest Shackleton

Days 12 to 16: To the king penguins in South Georgia – Continuing in Shackleton's footsteps

As you approach the rugged island of South Georgia, take a moment to think about Captain James Cook, who arrived here in 1775 and believed he had discovered the northern tip of a large southern continent! In fact, it is a relatively small island, only 176 km long. But with a 3,000-meter-high snow-capped mountain range, some of the world's largest animal colonies, and a fascinating history, South Georgia remains an island for explorers to this day.

Even as you approach, jagged peaks rise steeply into the sky, while seabirds often circle the ship. You sail along the coast, past spectacular glaciers, enjoying some protection from the prevailing westerly winds.

On Zodiac excursions, explore rugged bays and rocky coastlines in search of penguins, seal colonies, and bird cliffs. Keep an eye out for South Georgia's kelp forests: these fascinating underwater ecosystems are mesmerizing to watch as their fronds sway in the waves.

The Zodiacs will also take you ashore, where you can visit some of the largest king penguin colonies on earth, take guided walks among fur seals and elephant seals (pay attention to your guides' instructions!), and stroll along pebbly streams and green meltwater plains. Plans also include visiting the remains of once-thriving whaling stations and the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton, whose legendary survival journey is inextricably linked to this island.

In addition to Zodiac excursions, you may also take boat trips through fjords with towering cliffs or deeply indented bays to dramatic glacier fronts. Enjoy uninterrupted views of South Georgia's majestic coastline from the Observation Lounge.

Literally follow in Shackleton's footsteps

For Shackleton fans with a spirit of adventure, the optional hike from Fortuna Bay to Stromness is a highlight. This route follows the final stage of Shackleton, Worsley, and Crean's incredible crossing of the island —from the landing site at King Haakon Bay in the east to the whaling station at Stromness in the west, where they were finally rescued after 26 months of hardship.

From Fortuna Bay, the trail climbs to a spectacular high plateau before descending steeply to the abandoned whaling station at Stromness. If conditions are right, you can retrace this final section of Shackleton's route.

"The bright moonlight showed us that the interior of the country was incredibly rugged," wrote Shackleton. "High peaks, impassable cliffs, steep snow slopes, and sharply sloping glaciers could be seen in all directions."

Those with sufficient alpine trekking experience can even complete the entire Shackleton Walk on this trip. This involves spending two to three days on the 30 to 51 kilometer route through mountainous and glacier terrain. (optional activity, extra cost, unfortunately fully booked)

Days 17 to 19: At sea

As you leave South Georgia behind, you will be fascinated by the tireless flight maneuvers of numerous seabirds accompanying the ship, skillfully using the air currents generated by the ship to gain lift.

If time and weather permit, you may sail close to Shag Rocks —a fascinating group of rugged rocky islands that rise dramatically from the sea and are located near South Georgia.

As you continue your journey to Ushuaia, you can spend your last precious days at sea enjoying the views from the deck, relaxing on board, or attending more lectures. There is plenty of time to soak up the magic of the Southern Ocean, look back over your trip with a drink in the company of new friends, and reflect on your journey.

On the last evening, celebrate your unforgettable journey with a special farewell dinner with the captain and your travel group.

Day 20: Return to Ushuaia & disembarkation

In the early hours of the morning, you will cross the Beagle Channel before your ship silently docks in the port of Ushuaia. Disembarkation begins around 8 a.m. Say goodbye to your expedition team and fellow travelers, with whom you will hopefully share a deep new appreciation for the tremendous power of nature.

For participants who have booked a flight from Ushuaia before 12:30 p.m., an airport transfer will follow immediately. Those flying after 12:30 p.m. will have time to explore Ushuaia before another airport transfer in the afternoon. The exact procedures and times will be announced on board before disembarkation.

Note: We recommend that you do not book flights departing from Ushuaia before 12:00 noon on the day of disembarkation, as delays may occur.

Shackleton's Walk

Very few trips offer the opportunity to retrace the legendary 1916 crossing by Sir Ernest Shackleton, Frank Worsley, and Tom Crean. This is one of them. On the Shackleton Walk, you will hike across South Georgia in up to three days – from King Haakon Bay to Stromness. This region offers spectacular but extreme mountain scenery that must be approached with the utmost caution.

Although no technical climbing skills are required, the route includes challenging terrain, including a steep descent from the Tridents Mountains to the Crean Glacier, as well as potential hazards from crevasses.

For experienced mountain hikers or alpinists, the South Georgia Alpine Crossing is a unique adventure—a profound experience in one of the wildest and most remote regions of the world.

Required experience

Participants must have appropriate alpine hiking and climbing skills. A large part of the route leads across glaciers. Therefore, knowledge of rope techniques and glacier techniques is essential.

Requirements in detail:

  • Safe use of crampons and ice axes, including crampon technique on moderately steep, hard snow and ice, as well as self-arrest with an ice axe

  • Experience in moving in terrain with many crevasses using rope safety equipment

  • Snow camping experience (tent or snow shelter)

  • Ability to carry a backpack weighing 15–20 kg for up to 10 hours a day over 2–3 days

  • Extensive outdoor experience in extreme weather conditions, e.g., in high mountains, the Himalayas, or similar terrain

  • Your own personal equipment, including: backpack, gaiters, crampons, ice axe, and, most importantly, mountain boots

  • High level of fitness, endurance, and understanding that weather conditions can make the crossing impossible at any time

If you are unsure whether your skills are sufficient, please contact us. We will be happy to advise you.

Important: The local guides reserve the right to exclude individuals from the crossing if, in their opinion, they are not sufficiently experienced, fit, or adequately equipped.

Distance and duration of the crossing

Depending on the route chosen, the distance is between 35 and 50 km. The route leads over large, rugged glaciers and alpine passes. In ideal weather conditions, the crossing can be completed in two days – however, we plan for three days plus a reserve day in case of bad weather.

Your guides

Our experienced guides have many years of alpine experience and are fully certified in safety and mountain guiding. They lead the group according to strict safety guidelines and provide exciting insights into the wildlife and the surrounding area along the way.

There are two guides for every 4–8 participants.

Kayaking – Optional activity at extra cost

One of the most exciting ways to experience Antarctica.
Sea kayaking adventures in the stunning wilderness of Antarctica are guaranteed to be an experience that touches your soul. Paddle among drift ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes and take in the majestic landscape as it unfolds before you.

This kayaking program was developed by kayakers for kayakers!
The program style offers you the opportunity to develop your skills and network with experienced guides and your fellow travelers. Participating in a small group throughout the trip reduces unnecessary time lost to briefings and equipment trials—and maximizes your time on the water.

The professional kayak guides have led tours worldwide, specialize in the polar regions, and were selected for their passion for the sport. Kayaking is one of the best ways to experience the breathtaking coastlines up close and make the most of your time in these remote wilderness regions. You will have the opportunity to discuss your personal preferences for the tour with the guides, such as when you would like to paddle, go ashore, or combine both.

Depending on the weather, the kayaking program is usually available whenever the other expedition participants set off on excursions.

Each trip covers between 5 and 15 kilometers (approx. 2 to 4 hours) – often combining kayaking and shore excursions so that you don't miss a thing.
Each small group of up to 10 people per guide will experience hidden bays and coastal sections that are not accessible by Zodiacs. Of course, there will also be plenty of time for personal shore excursions and wildlife viewing.
Important note: Nature plays a crucial role in the sea kayaking program. Understanding weather-related changes is essential.

Equipment included

Kayak shoes (booties) and dry suits are available.

Snowshoeing – Optional activity at extra cost

Snowshoeing makes walking on gentle slopes and over the soft, powdery snow of Antarctica a breeze, allowing you to explore places that are difficult to reach in regular boots. Equipped with your own snowshoes and ski poles, you will be accompanied by experienced guides who will provide you with all the necessary instructions. Snowshoeing is a great way to climb some of Antarctica's best vantage points, stretch your legs, and enjoy the most spectacular landscapes on the planet. It's the perfect activity for everyone—no previous experience is necessary. Join in and discover a new side of Antarctica!

This popular alpine activity is easy to learn—all you need is the willingness to try something new. A full briefing is provided on site, and the team of guides will have you ready to go in less than half an hour. Participants should be sure-footed and of average fitness – trips can last up to three hours. If you enjoy hiking or long walks at home, you will be fit enough for this activity.

We try to go out as often as possible, but the number of excursions depends on the weather and the landing points on the itinerary. On average, there are six or more excursions per trip, each lasting up to three hours.
