itinerary
Advance information
Your arrival in Osaka and departure from Tokyo are not included in your tour price.
Since our customers all have individual wishes for their trip, we are happy to book flights separately. Of course, the flights then become part of a secure package tour. We recommend an overnight stay in Osaka to cushion any irregularities with your flight or lost luggage. We are happy to organize everything for you on request. Please contact us.
Day 1: Start of the trip in Osaka
Today, your journey begins in Osaka. In the largest port city on the island of Honshu, modern architecture and a lively gastronomic scene meet the heritage of the 16th century – including the famous Osaka Castle, once the seat of a shogunate. Upon arrival, you will head to your hotel, where you will spend the first night of the expedition. In the evening, you will get to know your fellow travelers and the expedition leaders over dinner at the hotel.
Please note that the trip in 2027 will take place in reverse order and will be one night shorter. The hotel stay at the end of the trip will not take place. We would be happy to send you the detailed itinerary.
Day 2: Experience Osaka & Embarkation
After a relaxed breakfast at the hotel, explore Osaka. Possible activities include a trip to Minoh Park or Osaka Castle. Covering an area of just 9.6 square kilometers (963 hectares), Minoh Park is one of Japan's smallest national parks and is home to a true natural landmark, the 33-meter-high Minoh Waterfall. The diverse wildlife includes the Japanese giant salamander and the protected Minoh monkeys.
The famous Osaka Castle is one of Japan's most famous landmarks. Enjoy the view from the main tower and listen to dramatic stories about former warlords and Osaka's turbulent past.
For lunch, head to the lively Dotonbori district, known for its culinary diversity and colorful cultural scene.
In the afternoon, your captain and expedition team will welcome you aboard the Heritage Adventurer.
Day 3: Tomano
From Port Uno-Ko, visit one of Japan's most famous gardens: Koraku-en, which means "Garden of Afterward Pleasure." This formal 17th-century garden covers 28 hectares and offers magnificent views of the nearby majestic Okayama Castle.
In the afternoon, continue on to Kurashiki, where you will explore the old merchant district. The well-preserved 17th-century warehouses, whitewashed and covered with traditional black tile roofs, line a picturesque canal with colorful koi and weeping willows on the banks.
You can visit the renowned Ohara Museum of Art, which displays works by Matisse, Picasso, and Renoir, as well as important pieces from Japan's famous Mingei movement, including ceramics by Shōji Hamada.
Art lovers can alternatively take part in a full-day excursion to the art island of Naoshima. There you can expect extraordinary architecture and museums such as the Chichu Art Museum and Benesse House, featuring works by Japanese and international artists such as Yayoi Kusama's iconic pumpkins.
Day 4: Hiroshima / Miyajima
Despite its turbulent history—the devastating dropping of the first atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, is of course still vivid in people's memories— Hiroshima today presents itself as a modern metropolis with a cosmopolitan flair. A visit to the impressive Peace Park with its museum and the silent memorial bearing the names of the victims and the eternal flame of peace is planned.
If possible, we time our visit to Miyajima Island to coincide with high tide so that we can experience the famous "floating" torii gate in all its glory. This place is considered one of the most beautiful landscapes in Japan and is also home to the important Buddhist temple Daisho-in.
Sample fresh local oysters and ice cream while native sika deer stroll through the streets, and take in the view of the Shintō shrine and iconic torii gate.
Day 5: Hagi
Hagi was once an insignificant fishing port until Mori Terumoto had it fortified in 1604. It was ultimately the samurai of the Mori clan who played a decisive role in the revolt against the Tokugawa shogunate in the mid-19th century. Today, the city is best known for its traditional pottery.
In the morning, explore the Teramachi district with its temples and shrines, as well as the historic Jokamachi district with its well-preserved samurai residences. You will also visit the ruins of Hagi Castle, the idyllic Shizuki Park, and the Zen temple Tokoji.
In the afternoon, there are various excursions to choose from:
Take a stroll through the small town of Senzaki, birthplace of the famous Japanese poet Misuzu Kaneko. Discover the natural monument and scenic gem Ryugu no Shiofuki ("Dragon's Breath") and the regional specialty Senzaki Kamaboko —a fish cake whose production tradition dates back to the 1680s.
Alternatively, you can visit the Yoshika Taibi Memorial Museum on the outskirts of the city. It houses an important collection of Hagiyaki ceramics, which were particularly prized as tea ceramics during the Edo period.
Or explore a unique geotope with the approximately 300 million-year-old Akiyoshido stalactite cave.
Please note that on the 2027 trip, you will be visiting Fukuoka rather than Hagi.
Day 6: Ulsan – A flying visit to South Korea
Today, you will cross the Sea of Japan and arrive in Ulsan, South Korea, where you are expected to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gyeongju. As the capital of the Silla Dynasty, whose history dates back to the first millennium, Gyeongju is also known as a "museum without walls" —a place steeped in ancient Korean history and Buddhist culture.
You will stroll through Tumuli Park with its excavated monuments, temples, royal tombs, and pagodas, and stop at Bulguksa Buddhist Temple, a masterpiece of traditional Korean architecture.
Other possible activities include visiting the iconic Woljeonggyo Bridge, sampling Korean specialties, and strolling along Hwangnidangil Road —South Korea's trendy shopping and street food destination that has retained its traditional charm.
Finally, take a stroll through the beautiful bamboo forest of Taehwagang to unwind. On this day, you will get to know South Korea from many different angles!
Day 7: Matsue – Back in Japan
Today, you will disembark at the port of Sakaiminato, the gateway to the city of Matsue. Matsue is known as the "city of water" because it is picturesquely situated between Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi. The plan is to visit Matsue Castle, a national cultural treasure and one of the few 17th-century castles in Japan that is still largely preserved in its original form.
Other possible activities for today include exploring Daisen-Oki National Park and the sacred Mount Daisen. This mountain was once home to 3,000 monk warriors and remains a center of Buddhist culture to this day. The summit, with its Ogamiyama Shrine, offers impressive panoramic views before you later visit the impressive Daisenji Temple.
Another highlight is a visit to the Japanese circular garden Yuushien, which features traditional elements such as ponds, waterfalls, streams, stone lanterns, rock gardens, and a variety of seasonal flowers, including over 250 varieties of Japanese peonies.
Alternatively, the Adachi Museum of Art invites visitors to take an inspiring tour. The exhibition is famous for its excellent Japanese gardens and an important collection of contemporary Japanese paintings, with around 1,500 high-quality works from the Meiji period onwards.
Day 8: Kanazawa
Today, there are several interesting excursion options to choose from:
Firstly, you can explore the historic mountain village of Shirakawa-go. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is tucked away in the mountains of the Shogawa River Valley in Hakusan National Park. As you stroll through the impressive mountain landscape, you will discover the region's unique cultural traditions, including the famous Gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Over 250 years old, their steep thatched roofs withstand heavy snowfall and used to provide ample space in the attic for silkworm breeding.
Alternatively, revel in Kanazawa's rich artistic heritage and discover various Japanese craft styles. Kanazawa is famous for its Kutani ceramics, ornate lacquerware, gold leaf finishing, hand-painted silk, and classical Noh theater, which has been performed since the 14th century. Stroll through the cobbled streets of the Higashi Chaya geisha district with its elegant restaurants and craft galleries, or visit the impressive Kenroku-en Garden from the Edo period, one of Japan's Three Great Gardens.
Day 9: Sado Island
Today, you will explore the remote island of Sado off the coast of Niigata. The island consists of the Osado and Kosado mountain ranges, which frame the Kokunaka Plain, and was once a place of exile for political exiles. These days, it is home to a rich cultural and religious life shaped by the exiles of the past, including puppet theater, Okesa folk dances, Ondeko drumming with demon dances, and classical Nō theater.
Sado is home to the Nippon ibis, which is extinct on the mainland. With a little luck, you can spot these iconic birds on a trip in a tarai-bune, a traditional Japanese fishing boat. This island, off the beaten tourist track, combines extraordinary natural landscapes —such as Senkakuwan Bay and the Ogi Peninsula—with rich wildlife and an exciting history—from gold and silver mining to samurai culture and unique forms of agriculture and aquaculture. You will visit the village of Shukunegi, a protected national cultural heritage site, and gain an insight into the traditional art of taiko drumming at the Sado Island Taiko Centre.
By the end of this day, you will understand why Sado is often referred to as a perfect miniature version of Japan.
The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary due to local weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and organizational requirements.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.
