10 days / 9 nights wilderness expedition to Hudson Bay with polar bear watching and 3 nights in a tundra camp in the Barren Lands
+++ 5% Ermäßigung bei Neubuchung bis 31.10.2026 +++
Where do I begin? This journey is the most active and comprehensive expedition to Hudson Bay:
Hiking with polar bears against a backdrop of warm autumn colors – a breathtaking experience even for well-traveled globetrotters.
Northern lights, three nights in our tundra camp in the Canadian Barren Lands, and encounters with wildlife perfectly adapted to the climatic conditions allow you to feel the special power of the Arctic. In addition, the remoteness and associated logistics make this safari an experience that only a handful of guests get to enjoy each year.
But let's start from the beginning:
First, you will spend three nights at the cozy Caribou Tundra Camp on Schmok Lake, a heated tent camp in the remote Barren Lands near the border with Nunavut. Each day, you will follow the ancient trails of the Pallermiut Inuit through the autumnal landscape, exploring the rolling hills and dwarf forests in search of the elusive Qamanirjuaq caribou herd. Whether picking blueberries, fishing for trout, or even taking a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear lake, you will experience the Arctic with all your senses.
Enjoy a sundowner in the evening by the crackling campfire under the spectacular Arctic sky. You are very likely to witness a fascinating Northern Lights show.
National Geographic photographer and Explorers Club member Jad Davenport will accompany you on this extraordinary journey. You will shoot shoulder to shoulder with Jad as he teaches you travel, wildlife, and landscape photography (even with your iPhones or Samsungs!) and regales you with captivating stories from his past assignments.
You will then enjoy four days of rustic luxury at Heritage Lodge, located on the rugged shores of Hudson Bay—right on the polar bear trail and north of Manitoba's last great wild river, the Seal River. On daily hikes, you'll have a very good chance of seeing polar bears, arctic foxes, arctic hares, sik-siks, wolverines, migrating snow geese, flocks of sandhill cranes, and other wildlife.
The Arctic Safari is limited to just a few lucky guests each year, making it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

itinerary
Day 1: Anticipation builds – arrival in Winnipeg and get-together
After arriving in Winnipeg, enjoy a relaxing stay at our first-class hotel, The Grand by
Lakeview at Winnipeg Airport. During dinner together, you will not only meet your fellow travelers, but also receive interesting initial information.
Day 2: From Winnipeg via Churchill to the tundra camp – the expedition begins
After an early morning flight, you will arrive in Churchill, where our expedition leader will be waiting for you at the airport.
You will then continue flying along the rugged Hudson Bay coastline before turning inland and finally reaching our remote tundra camp. Nestled amid the untouched expanses of the Canadian Barren Lands, this exclusive camp is located on picturesque Schmock Lake, not far from the border with Nunavut.
Upon arrival, you will move into your private tent before our team gives you a brief introduction to life in the camp and the experiences that await you.
Days 3 to 5: Nature trekking and glamping at the Tundra Camp in the Barren Lands
Over the next few days, you will usually go on one excursion in the morning and another in the afternoon, with lunch at the Tundra Camp in between. Alternatively, you can go on a full-day exploration tour with a picnic lunch.
After an impressive day in the untouched wilderness, relax with a glass of wine and fine appetizers before our chefs serve you a multi-course dinner.
Your time at the remote Tundra Camp is filled with intense experiences: spending the night in the vast Barren Lands, hiking along the ancient migration routes of the Qaminurjuaq caribou herd, and exciting encounters with wildlife.
Explore species-rich ecosystems with a fascinating history in the Hudson Plains and Taiga Shield. During hikes, your experienced guide will be happy to share their extensive knowledge of the landscape and its inhabitants with you.
After a final excursion at Tundra Camp, you will travel on to Seal River Heritage Lodge, where the next chapter of your Arctic safari begins.
Bitte beachten Sie, dass Sie bei folgenden Terminen zuerst in der Heritage Lodge und dann im Tundra-Camp untergebracht sind:
03.09. – 12.09.2026
02.09. – 11.09.2027
31.08. – 09.09.2028
Days 6 to 8: Wildlife around Heritage Lodge
Seal River Heritage Lodge is located directly on the coast of Hudson Bay—right on the migration route of polar bears, which roam here while waiting for the sea to freeze over. Close encounters with the "kings of the Arctic" are the focus of your wildlife excursions. During your stay, you may also encounter polar and red foxes, sik-siks (Arctic ground squirrels), and snow hares.
During your trip, you will also have the opportunity to observe a variety of migratory and wading birds in Hudson Bay. The autumnal colors of the tundra provide a breathtaking backdrop for landscape and wildlife photography.
As at Tundra Camp, two excursions are scheduled daily at Heritage Lodge. However, meals may be flexibly rescheduled in favor of special wildlife viewing or exceptional photographic opportunities.
Day 9: Historic Churchill + Return flight to Winnipeg
After breakfast, take off for Churchill. Be sure to have your camera ready for this last opportunity to take spectacular aerial photos of the Canadian wilderness.
Back in Churchill, you will explore the town and its surroundings with one of our tour guides and learn many interesting facts about its rich history as a port town and former military base.
On your tour, you will visit stops such as the Parks Canada exhibit, the Itsanitaq Museum, and the polar bear prison.
Along the way, your tour guide will also show you impressive murals that were commissioned in 2016 as part of the SeaWalls mural festival.
Before dinner together, you will have some time to browse for souvenirs.
Your flight south to Winnipeg will then take place in the evening. Upon arrival, collect your luggage and proceed through the arrivals hall directly back to the Grand Hotel.
Day 10: Flight home
It's time to say goodbye to the Arctic for good. You may well find yourself happily scrolling through your new photo collection at the airport. Then you'll fly home full of precious memories.
(B) = Breakfast, (L) = Lunch, (D) = Dinner
PLEASE NOTE: The daily itineraries described here are for your guidance only. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, but also in order to respond to current circumstances regarding wildlife viewing. The expedition leader will determine the final itinerary. Flexibility is of utmost importance when traveling in unspoiled nature.
PLEASE NOTE FOR TRAVEL ON SEPTEMBER 4, 2025 & SEPTEMBER 3, 2026: During this travel period, after departing from Churchill, you will first fly to Seal River Heritage Lodge for 4 nights, followed by 3 nights at Tundra Camp.
Further information
Where you will stay: Your lodge and the Tundra Camp
Heritage Lodge on Hudson Bay
60 km northwest of Churchill
Your comfortable lodge for the next few days is located on the seemingly endless coast of Hudson Bay. It is situated near the Seal River estuary and is the perfect base, secluded and far away from crowds and the nearest town, if you want to observe wild polar bears and beluga whales in their natural habitat.
Spectacular photos of wildlife and the northern lights can be taken from the secure grounds. The tower with its viewing platform offers an exclusive view of the action.
The accommodation has eight double rooms with private bathrooms, which are far enough away from the common areas that you can retreat and relax when needed.
In front of the lounge's open fire, accompanied by the soothing crackling of the wood, you can relax with a glass of Canadian wine and a book from the lodge library.
SUSTAINABILITY is a top priority here: the lodge is powered by solar energy and uses graywater recycling and biodegradable cleaning and hygiene products. Consistent waste management is also one of the Ecolodges' environmental measures.

Tundra Camp
200 km northwest of Heritage Lodge
Tundra Camp is located on the shores of Schmok Lake, just a few kilometers from the border between Manitoba and Nunavut. This camp is set up every year in September for just a few weeks so that you can experience the Canadian Barren Lands.
A double, electrified, and alarm-secured fence encloses the site with its seven cozy Arctic Oven expedition tents. Each is equipped with a heater and comfortably accommodates up to two guests.
There is a heated bathhouse on site with lockers, showers, sinks, and toilets. Meals are served in a large expedition tent or on the beach, weather permitting.
In the evening, enjoy an aperitif by the fire and, with a little luck, watch the northern lights dance across the sky before retiring to your tent. You will sleep soundly, breathe in the pure tundra air, and enjoy the silence of nature.

Ethical wildlife viewing
The coastline of Hudson Bay is pure, untouched wilderness and the natural habitat of many wild animals such as polar bears, wolves, caribou, black bears, and arctic foxes. The adjacent Arctic bays are home to seals, ringed seals, and even beluga whales during the summer months. The combination of the three surrounding ecosystems—Hudson Bay, taiga, and tundra—creates a true paradise for cold-loving creatures.
An untouched corner of the world where nature is still allowed to be natural.
What is ethical wildlife viewing?
Ethical wildlife viewing involves observing wild animals in their natural habitat without disturbing or influencing their instinctive behavior.
In practice, you must therefore observe the following principles:
Getting around on foot:
- The excursions are usually conducted on foot in order to approach the wild animals quietly and unobtrusively. Although this means covering long distances on foot, it is the only way to protect the rich ecosystem with your small footprint.
Keep your distance: Better safe than sorry
- Cute and fluffy are definitely adjectives that can be used to describe polar bears. However, they are the largest land-based predators on earth and can quickly feel threatened. To ensure the safety of these frosty predators and your own, you must maintain a minimum distance of 100 meters. If a curious polar bear does stray into your vicinity, the guides have various deterrent measures at their disposal to safely de-escalate the situation.
Noise reduction:
- Psst! Polar bears are very sensitive to noise and are startled even by the simple creaking of wood.
As soon as a polar bear approaches the lodge, you should remain calm and, for example, turn off the sound of the shutter when taking photos. This way, both you and your wild visitors can enjoy the experience undisturbed.
No drones:
- As tempting as it may sound to film these majestic animals from high above, you should refrain from using them. Flying drones are a visual and acoustic stimulus for polar animals and expose them to avoidable stress.
No perfume:
- Polar bears have highly sensitive noses and can detect smells from miles away. To avoid irritating the bears, you should therefore refrain from wearing perfume.
Do not feed wild animals:
- Feeding wild animals can trigger a dependency on humans and, in extreme cases, can even be fatal.
Please read!
You travel to the untouched Arctic regions of Canada to observe the majestic wildlife. Our mission is to offer you safaris that have minimal impact on the environment and wildlife. The safety of travelers and the integrity of the animals are our top priorities.
To ensure this, our customers travel in small groups and are accompanied by experienced nature guides. The daily program is flexible and depends on the current movements of the wild animals, the tides, and the weather.
inventia and our local partner accept no liability for unforeseen events ("force majeure") that affect the sighting of wild animals in their natural environment. Although our travel itineraries and content are the result of many years of experience, we cannot guarantee the extent or diversity of animal sightings.
Weather conditions, population density, behavior patterns, and migrations of other wildlife are some factors that can influence the behavior and activity of animals. Therefore, there is a possibility that the desired wildlife may not be sighted. While this is unlikely, it is not impossible.
Due to the remote location of your destination in the Arctic, flight irregularities are possible due to rapidly changing weather conditions. It is important to remain flexible on this type of expedition trip. We will always arrange alternatives for you.
Be aware that traveling to remote regions of Canada can involve risky activities such as polar bear encounters, which pose risks to your health. These experiences are vastly different from visits to the zoo or Disney World. Please follow the instructions of our local partners and guides at all times. Any deviation from these instructions is at your own risk.
Similarly, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon. We cannot guarantee that they will appear.
