Aqua Lares
6-day superyacht expedition aboard the Aqua Lares (max. 30 passengers) from Tromsø via North Cape and Bear Island to Longyearbyen (Spitsbergen) or in the opposite direction
This exclusive route runs along Europe's last untouched wilderness between the rugged coast of northern Norway and the majestic glaciers of Spitsbergen.
As a luxurious small ship and the only icebreaker superyacht in the Arctic region, the Aqua Lares reaches remote coasts and quiet bays far beyond the reach of classic expedition ships – not least thanks to its Ice Class 1B rating.

Another highlight of the route is isolated Bear Island, a dramatically towering rocky island in the middle of the Barents Sea, where up to a million seabirds breed on its secluded cliffs every year. On tender boat trips, you can experience the hustle and bustle of guillemots, thick-billed murres, and fulmars up close. You can literally "dive" into the Arctic waters with a Polar Plunge, a short ice bath.
Discover Arctic waters and islands up close
Visits to small Norwegian coastal settlements such as Gjesvær or Skarsvåg, where only a handful of people live, give you an insight into everyday life in the harsh north, surrounded by colorful wooden houses, fishing boats, and rugged landscapes.
On this ship expedition aboard the Aqua Lares, you will not only view the landscape and wildlife from a distance, but also hear the raspy kek-kek of puffins and count the whiskers of seals. In addition, you will receive a wealth of exciting background information from your experienced nature guides and enjoy excellent comfort and one-on-one service in one of the most remote regions of the world.

Advance information
Your arrival and departure to/from Tromsø or Longyearbyen (Spitsbergen) are not included in your travel price.
Since our customers all have individual wishes for their trip, we are happy to book flights separately. Of course, the flights then become part of a secure package tour. We recommend an overnight stay in Tromsø or Longyearbyen to cushion any irregularities with your flight or lost luggage. We are happy to organize everything for you on request. Please contact us.
Two-way itinerary
Please note that we offer this trip in two directions. Below, we present the itinerary from Tromsø to Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen day by day. The itinerary from Longyearbyen to Tromsø follows exactly the same route in reverse. We will be happy to send you a detailed itinerary on request.
Day 2: Gjesvær & Skarsvåg (North Cape)
This day begins with a trip to the small fishing village of Gjesvær. It is located on the island of Magerøya, at the northern tip of which is the North Cape with its striking globe sculpture. Gjesvær is located 35 kilometers west of it. From there, you will take a tender boat to the Gjesværstappan Islands, where puffins, northern gannets, and kittiwakes populate one of Europe's largest seabird colonies.
In the afternoon, you will continue your journey to Skarsvåg, one of the northernmost villages in Europe. There, wild reindeer often graze leisurely past colorful wooden houses.
Day 3: Rantalabukta (Reinøya)
Today, you will go ashore on Reinøya, a remote island that was once used as grazing land by Sami reindeer herders. Accompanied by experienced nature guides, you will take walks along the beaches and marvel at impressive geological formations such as rocks shaped by frost weathering.
In the afternoon, you can take the Polar Plunge and jump into the ice-cold Arctic waters.
Day 4: Bear Island
Today, you will take excursions along the remote cliffs of Bear Island, home to large colonies of puffins, guillemots, and fulmars. Tender boat trips will bring you up close to these impressive seabirds. In addition, your nature guides will provide you with fascinating insights into the island's unique ecology.
Day 5: Samarinvågen
Today you will reach Spitsbergen, where you will start the day by exploring the remote Samarinvågen bay in the south of the Hornsund fjord. Here, a calving glacier fills the bay with drifting ice floes that serve as resting places for bearded seals. You can also observe seabirds such as red-throated divers, thick-billed guillemots, and eider ducks. With a little luck, you may even spot a beluga whale.
Day 6: Arrival in Longyearbyen
After a hearty breakfast on board, you bid farewell to the Aqua Lares and its crew.
If you would like to extend your stay in the far north, please contact us about extension options!
PLEASE NOTE: The daily programs described here are for your guidance only. The itinerary may vary due to local weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and organizational requirements. The expedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.
Further information
Destinations of your superyacht expedition from Tromsø to Spitsbergen
Longyearbyen
Located on the main island of the Svalbard archipelago, Longyearbyen is the northernmost settlement in the world —a remote Arctic town framed by glaciers and endless mountain ranges. Once a center of coal mining, today it warmly welcomes travelers with incredibly clear air, often almost surreal silence, and temperatures that can drop below –40°C in winter.
Samarinvågen
The calving glacier in Samarinvågen often fills the bay with drifting ice, creating ideal resting places for bearded seals. Seabirds are abundant here, including red-throated divers, thick-billed guillemots, and eider ducks—both the common and king eider species. With a little luck, you may even spot a beluga whale surfacing in the calm waters.
Bear Island
Bear Island (Bjørnøya) is a remote outpost in the Barents Sea, located approximately 235 km south of Spitsbergen and 397 km northwest of the Norwegian mainland. With an area of 178 km², it is the southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago and is characterized by its dramatic cliffs, steep coastlines, and rich history.
The island was declared a nature reserve in 2002, along with the surrounding waters, in order to protect its unique flora and fauna. Access is therefore only permitted in certain areas and at certain times so as not to disturb the sensitive ecosystems. One outstanding feature of Bear Island is its bird life. The southern cliffs are home to huge colonies of seabirds such as puffins, thick-billed murres, razorbills, and eider ducks. In total, over a million seabirds gather here during the breeding season. The island is also an important resting place for migratory birds such as barnacle geese and brent geese. Its isolated location and undisturbed nature make it a paradise for ornithologists and nature lovers.
Although Bear Island is not permanently inhabited, there is a meteorological station on the island that is operated by Norway.
wildlife
bearded seals
Bearded seals are often seen on drifting ice floes in calm bays such as Samarinvågen. Recognizable by their long whiskers and broad, square snouts, they are mostly solitary and spend much of their time diving for bottom-dwelling fish and invertebrates. Slow and cautious, they are superbly adapted to life in the icy waters of the high Arctic.
reindeer
Reindeer roam the tundra in small, scattered groups, grazing on moss, lichen, and hardy plants. With their short legs, thick fur, and round bodies, they are ideally adapted to life in the Arctic.
belugas
Belugas are occasionally observed in the calm fjords of the Arctic, where they swim in small, tight groups just below the surface of the water. Their light coloring and round heads make them instantly recognizable, and their diverse vocalizations have earned them the nickname "canaries of the sea." Often sociable and sometimes curious, they nevertheless remain one of the shyest marine mammal species in the region.
puffin
As the "clowns of the sea," puffins delight with their colorful beaks, upright stance, and rapid wing beats. In summer, they gather in huge colonies on northern cliffs to breed and raise their chicks—one of the most endearing wildlife spectacles in the Arctic.
What does ice class 1B mean?
The Aqua Lares has ice class 1B certification. This certification, which is based on Finnish-Swedish regulations, means that the yacht has been reinforced so that it can safely navigate in waters with light to moderate ice. The hull, propulsion, and technical systems are designed so that the ship can handle first-year sea ice with a thickness of around 0.6–0.8 meters. In more severe ice conditions, assistance from an icebreaker may be necessary.
For travelers, this means that the Aqua Lares is ideally suited for polar regions and is particularly suitable for summer and early fall expeditions in areas such as Spitsbergen. Although it is not an icebreaker and is not designed for very thick multi-year Arctic ice, it offers ideal conditions for safe and comfortable expedition routes in the typical light to moderate ice conditions of these travel seasons.
