Expedition to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Orkney Islands, Elephant Island, Antarctic Peninsula, and crossing the Antarctic Circle with up to 6 species of penguins

from/to Ushuaia

23 days (22 nights)

MS Hondius

Probably the most comprehensive trip in our program. All the highlights of Antarctica in one trip!

The "Grand Tour" takes you on a high arc to Antarctica and promises not only visits to regions that very few people have ever traveled to, but also nature and wildlife experiences like no other.

We associate the British Falkland Islands with the war news of 1982. Hardly anyone knows how beautiful the nature and how rich in species the animal world is on this archipelago, which consists of many hundreds of islands. Around 3,000 king penguins breed their chicks here. Rockhopper, gentoo, and Magellanic penguins can also be spotted on some of the uninhabited islands.

South Georgia raises the bar: the small main island of the archipelago of the same name has a lot to offer: its snow-capped peaks reach heights of 3,000 meters, more than 160 glaciers flow from it into the sea, large groups of giant elephant seals lounge on its beaches, fur seals and up to 200,000 breeding pairs of king penguins enjoy the seclusion of the uninhabited island. Visit the former whaling station and the grave of the heroic Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Just south of the Antarctic Convergence lie the South Orkney Islands, only 1,000 km from the Antarctic Peninsula. The archipelago became famous thanks to Shackleton's dramatic rescue mission. Weather permitting, you can visit the Argentine research station Orcadas, look over the scientists' shoulders, and ask questions.

Then finally you reach the pack ice boundary and cruise past the first majestic icebergs. You reach the Antarctic Peninsula from the eastern Weddell Sea. The next 8 days are all about the Antarctic continent before you return via the Drake Passage to the end point of your journey: Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, located on the Argentine part of Tierra del Fuego.

Another highlight of the trip is crossing the Antarctic Circle.

route

itinerary

This cruise to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula is an animal lover's dream come true. The expedition explores one of the last untamed areas on Earth—a land with wildly romantic landscapes and an incredibly diverse wildlife.

Day 1: The end of the world, the beginning of a journey
Your journey begins where the world ends, in Ushuaia (Argentina) – also known as the southernmost city on the planet. It is located at the southernmost tip of South America. In the afternoon, you will begin your journey in this small town in Tierra del Fuego, which is itself known as the "end of the world," and spend the rest of the evening sailing through the picturesque, mountain-lined Beagle Channel.

Day 2: Winged life in the westerlies
Several species of albatrosses, storm petrels, shearwaters, and diving petrels follow our ship with the westerlies.

Day 3: Visit the Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands offer a rich wildlife. Many animals can be approached easily, but with caution. These islands are a largely unknown gem, mainly remembered for the war between Great Britain and Argentina in 1982. Not only do numerous bird species live here, but Peale's dolphins (black-chinned dolphins) and Commerson's dolphins also inhabit the surrounding waters.

During this part of the trip, we can visit the following areas:

Westpoint Island – This beautiful island is home to a variety of bird species, from coastal birds near the landing site to black-browed albatrosses in their nests. Among them is a colony of rockhopper penguins, which must make an incredible climb from the sea to reach their nests among the albatrosses.

Saunders Island – Here we can see the black-browed albatross and watch it make its sometimes awkward landings. It breeds alongside king cormorants and rockhopper penguins. King, Magellanic, and gentoo penguins can also be found here.

Day 4: Seat of Falkland culture
The capital of the Falklands, Port Stanley has South American features mixed with a little Victorian charm: colorful houses, well-kept gardens, and English pubs. In the surrounding area, you can see several hundred-year-old shipwrecks, which are silent witnesses to the hardships of 19th-century seafaring. The small but interesting museum is also worth a visit. It tells the story of the Falklands from the early days of settlement to the Falklands War. Admission to the museum is included. The capital, which you can explore at your leisure, is home to around 2,100 people today.

Days 5–6: Back out to sea
On our way to South Georgia, we cross the Antarctic Convergence. Within a few hours, the temperature cools down considerably and colliding water masses cause nutrient-rich water to rise to the surface of the sea. This phenomenon attracts a variety of seabirds (including several species of albatrosses, shearwaters, petrels, whalebirds, and skuas), which we can now observe in the immediate vicinity of the ship.

Days 7–10: South Georgia
Today you will reach South Georgia and can start your first activities there. The weather conditions here are very challenging and will largely determine the program.

Places you may visit include:

Prion Island – This place is closed during the early breeding season of the wandering albatross (November 20 – January 7). From January onwards, the sexually mature birds have found their mates and are sitting on eggs or caring for their chicks. Experience the gentle nature of these animals, which have the largest wingspan of any bird in the world.

Fortuna Bay – many king penguins and seals live on a beautiful plain in front of the Fortuna Glacier. Here you have the opportunity to follow the last section of Shackleton's route to the abandoned whaling village of Stromness. This route leads over the mountain pass behind Shackleton's Waterfall. The terrain here is partly marshy, so be prepared to cross small streams.

Salisbury Plain, St. Andrews Bay, Gold Harbor – These sites are home not only to the three largest king penguin colonies in South Georgia, but also to three of the world's largest breeding grounds for Antarctic fur seals. Millions of seals breed in South Georgia in December and January. In February, the young seals are curious and playful, filling the surf with life and fun. Large elephant seals come to the beaches to moult.

Grytviken – You have the opportunity to visit this abandoned whaling station, where king penguins walk the streets and elephant seals lie around and relax as if they own the place, which is almost the case. You can also visit the South Georgia Museum and Shackleton's grave.

On the afternoon of the 10th day, depending on conditions, you will sail south towards the South Orkney Islands.

Day 11: The journey continues south
On this route, we may encounter drift ice. There, Antarctic skuas and snow petrels join the other seabirds and follow the ship southward.

Day 12: Picturesque views of the South Orkney Islands
Depending on prevailing conditions, we may visit Base Orcadas , an Argentine scientific station on Laurie Island. The staff will be happy to show you around the station. If a visit here is not possible, we may land at Shingle Cove on Coronation Island instead.

Day 13: Legendary Elephant Island
You have now traveled roughly the same distance (albeit in the opposite direction) as Sir Ernest Shackleton did in the spring of 1916 in a small lifeboat, the James Caird. Watch Elephant Island disappear on the horizon after crossing this vast sea. It's amazing how Shackleton and his crew of five managed to do it.

The purpose of Shackleton's crossing was to rescue 22 shipwrecked members of his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, also known as the Endurance Expedition, who were stranded on Elephant Island. Shackleton's legendary rescue mission lasted four and a half months.

Conditions on Elephant Island are difficult. The coastline consists mainly of vertical cliffs and ice cliffs exposed to the elements. If possible, you will take the Zodiacs to Point Wild, where the stranded members of Shackleton's expedition miraculously survived.

Day 14: Along the Antarctic Peninsula
Ice permitting, you will sail into Antarctic Sound on the northwestern edge of the Weddell Sea. Here, colossal tabular icebergs announce your arrival at the eastern edges of the Antarctic Peninsula. Brown Bluff is a potential landing site where you will have the chance to set foot on the Antarctic continent.

Day 15: A glimpse of the South Shetland Islands
The volcanic islands of the South Shetlands are windswept and often shrouded in fog, but they also have their subtle charms, such as diverse flora (mosses, lichens, flowering grasses) and fauna (gentoo and chinstrap penguins, southern giant petrels).

At Deception Island, the ship sails through Neptune's Bellows into the flooded caldera. Here you will find an abandoned whaling station and thousands of Cape petrels, numerous Dominican gulls, brown and South Polar skuas, and Antarctic terns. Good hiking is possible in this volcanic landscape.

Days 16–20: Continuing into Antarctica
Gray stone peaks covered in snow, towers of broken blue and white ice, and a very diverse flora and fauna welcome you to Antarctica. You will enter the Gerlach Strait area and see one of the most beautiful landscapes Antarctica has to offer.

Places you can visit here include:

Neko Harbor – An epic landscape of massive glaciers and endless snowfields shaped by the wind. A Zodiac excursion offers the best perspective of the ice-capped mountain peaks.

Paradise Bay – During a Zodiac ride in this expansive, ice-strewn bay, there is a good chance of seeing humpback and minke whales.

The goal is to sail south. If conditions permit, you can visit the following locations above the Arctic Circle:

Crystal Sound – The journey continues south, past the Argentine Islandsto an ice-covered stretch of water. You are now close to the Arctic Circle, which you will cross in the morning.

Detaille Island – You can land near an abandoned British research station here. The area features high mountains and impressive glaciers.

Pourquoi Pas Island – You can sail around this island, named after the ship of the famous French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot. This place is known for its narrow fjords and high mountains covered with glaciers.

Horseshoe Island – This is the site of the former British Base Y, a remnant of the 1950s that is now unmanned but still equipped with almost all of the technology it had during its operation.

As with all Antarctic voyages, conditions in the Drake Passage determine the exact departure time.

Days 21–22: Familiar seas, familiar friends
The journey home will be anything but lonely. As you cross the Drake Passage , you will once again be greeted by a multitude of seabirds, reminding you of the passage south. But this time, they seem a little more familiar.

Day 23: There and back again
Every adventure, no matter how great, must come to an end at some point. Now it's time to disembark in Ushuaia —but with memories that will accompany you wherever your next adventure takes you.

The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.

polar diving

Beneath the surface of the icy waters of the polar regions lies a fascinating world of shimmering ice formations and surprisingly diverse marine life. Between icebergs and under pack ice, divers encounter colorful soft corals, sea anemones, crabs, and other specialized organisms that are perfectly adapted to the extreme conditions.

The dives are accompanied by experienced guides and carefully planned. Safety is the top priority. Depending on weather and ice conditions, one to two dives with a maximum depth of about 20 meters are planned per day. Prerequisites for participation are extensive experience in cold water diving and routine in handling dry suits.
