The MS Sea Spirit can carry up to 114 passengers to landing sites that are inaccessible to large cruise ships. Every day, Zodiacs make the crossing, accompanied by an experienced expedition team.

On days at sea, albatrosses, giant petrels, and storm petrels accompany the ship; marine biologists, ornithologists, and historians give lectures on board and accompany every landing.

We recommend this trip if you want to see the world’s largest penguin colonies and one of the most wildlife-rich regions in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s particularly well-suited for nature photographers, birdwatchers, and travelers who prioritize wildlife experiences over beach weather.

Feel free to combine this expedition with a two- or three-day stay in Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego National Park, or a visit to Buenos Aires. You might also consider extending your trip to Patagonia to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier and Torres del Paine.

itinerary

From Ushuaia to the most wildlife-rich islands in the South Atlantic

Day 1 | Arrival in Ushuaia

You’ll arrive in Ushuaia, Argentina’s southernmost city on the Beagle Channel. A group transfer will take you from the airport to the Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa, which is included in the tour price. The rest of the day is yours to spend at your leisure.

Ushuaia is nestled between the snow-capped peaks of the Martial Mountains and the strait. Take some time to explore the short hiking trails, visit the Museo del Fin del Mundo, or sample Patagonian lamb and Tierra del Fuego seafood at one of the restaurants along the harbor.

Day 2 | Boarding

After breakfast at the hotel, you’ll have the morning to yourself. In the afternoon, a group transfer will take you to the harbor, where you’ll board the MS Sea Spirit. Following a safety briefing and a welcome cocktail, the ship will set sail and head through the Beagle Channel toward the open sea. From the deck, you’ll be able to spot sea lions, cormorants, and, with a little luck, Magellanic penguins along the channel’s shores.

Day 3 | At sea, heading toward the Falkland Islands

On the first full day at sea, the expedition team will get you in the mood for the days ahead. Through lectures, you’ll learn interesting facts about marine biology, ornithology, and the history of the Falkland Islands. On the outer deck, albatrosses and petrels will accompany the ship, and the onboard experts will help you identify the species. In the evening, the expedition leader will provide an overview of the upcoming days’ program and explain the rules for shore landings.

Days 4 and 5 | Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands (Malvinas) are located about 480 kilometers off the coast of Argentina. The ship heads for remote outer islands where you can see huge colonies of king penguins, rockhopper penguins, gentoo penguins, Magellanic penguins, and macaroni penguins up close. Five species of penguins breed on this archipelago, along with black-browed albatrosses, giant petrels, and caracara birds of prey.

The islands are home to about 80% of the world's black-browed albatross population. Southern elephant seals and South American sea lions can be found on the beaches, and Peale's dolphins and Commerson's dolphins are regularly spotted in the coastal waters.

You’ll also visit Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands. This small town, with a population of around 3,000, has a distinctly British character: you’ll stroll past Christ Church Cathedral with its whale bone archway, visit the Falkland Islands Museum, and explore the wrecks of historic sailing ships in the harbor.

Days 6 and 7 | At sea, heading toward South Georgia

On the way to South Georgia, you’ll pass the Shag Rocks, a group of steep rock towers inhabited by thousands of cormorants. Shortly thereafter, the MS Sea Spirit crosses the Antarctic Convergence, the biological boundary of the Southern Ocean. You’ll feel the water temperature drop and the species composition change. Albatrosses, storm petrels, and prions continue to accompany the ship.

On board, the lectures will deepen your knowledge: you’ll learn about the history of the whaling industry in South Georgia, Ernest Shackleton’s legendary rescue mission in 1916, and the biology of the king penguin colonies. The expedition team conducts the mandatory biosecurity check and inspects your clothing, backpacks, and tripod legs for seeds and organic material to protect South Georgia’s sensitive ecosystem.

Days 8 to 14 | South Georgia

You’ll spend up to seven days along the coast of South Georgia, one of the most wildlife-rich islands on Earth. It’s estimated that around 100 million seabirds breed here, and on beaches like Salisbury Plain and St. Andrews Bay, over 100,000 elephant seals jostle alongside countless penguins. The captain and expedition leader adjust the route daily based on weather, sea conditions, and wildlife sightings. You’ll go ashore at several bays and beaches along the northeast coast and explore the wildlife by Zodiac.

On Salisbury Plain, you’ll find yourself in the midst of one of the island’s largest king penguin colonies. Tens of thousands of penguins crowd together, with the chicks in their brown downy coats nestled among the adults. The noise level is deafening, and the smell is intense. On the beach, you’ll see elephant seals, which can weigh up to four tons.

In St. Andrews Bay, you’ll find South Georgia’s largest king penguin colony, with an estimated 100,000 breeding pairs. Behind it lies a glacial valley. Fur seals crowd the shore; around three million of them live on South Georgia.

In Grytviken, you’ll visit the most famous of the former whaling stations. The rusting remains of the facility are a designated historic site. At the South Georgia Museum, you’ll learn more about the history of whaling and exploration on the island. The small cemetery is home to the grave of Ernest Shackleton, who died here in 1922 during his final expedition. In the bay, fur seals regularly surface among the old structures.

Other possible stops include Gold Harbour, where you can see king penguins and elephant seals against a glacial backdrop, as well as Cooper Bay, home to macaroni penguins and giant petrels. You’ll travel by Zodiac along towering glaciers that calve directly into the sea.

Days 15 and 16 | Return trip via the Falkland Islands

The MS Sea Spirit is heading west. The sea can be rough on this stretch of the voyage, but the ship’s stabilizers keep it steady. On board, you can look through the photos from the past few days, and the expedition team will give their final presentations. With a little luck, you might spot humpback or fin whales along the way.

Day 17 | Falkland Islands

Depending on the weather and the itinerary, the MS Sea Spirit may make another stop at the Falkland Islands. You can take this opportunity to go hiking across the open grasslands, visit more penguin colonies, or take another stroll through Stanley.

Day 18 | At sea, heading toward Ushuaia

The MS Sea Spirit is heading toward Ushuaia. Albatrosses, giant petrels, and South Polar skuas accompany the ship one last time. On board, the expedition team gives final presentations, and the best photos from the trip are shown during the end-of-voyage slideshow. At the captain’s farewell cocktail reception, you’ll look back on the expedition together with your fellow travelers.

Day 19 | Disembarkation in Ushuaia

After breakfast on board, you will disembark. A group transfer will take you to the airport or to downtown Ushuaia.

The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.

Photo tour (included)

Photographer captures penguins coming ashore

South Georgia and the Falkland Islands are among the most photogenic places on Earth: king penguin colonies stretching across entire beaches, glacier fronts by the sea, elephant seals bathed in golden light, and albatrosses soaring over the open sea.

To ensure you return with stunning photos, an experienced photographer will accompany the expedition. During lectures on board and while ashore, he will offer practical tips on composition, lighting, and animal behavior. Whether it’s a wide-angle landscape shot on Salisbury Plain or a close-up of a king penguin chick, the expedition team knows the best vantage points at every landing site and will help you make the most of every situation.

Sea kayaking in the South Atlantic (additional charge applies)

A group of kayakers in front of the MS Sea Spirit in a bay

From the Zodiac, you can observe the wildlife. From a kayak, you’re right in the middle of it all. The optional sea kayak tour takes you in small groups among icebergs, along steep glacier fronts, and through quiet coves where fur seals slide down from the rocks and penguins surface alongside the boat.

In South Georgia, you’ll paddle against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and calving glaciers. In the Falkland Islands, you’ll glide through clear waters past bird colonies. Space is limited. Registration is required at the time of booking. No prior experience is necessary; training will be provided on board.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Ushuaia?

There are no direct international flights to Ushuaia. Travel involves a domestic flight from Buenos Aires (approx. 3.5 hours). Aerolíneas Argentinas and LATAM operate this route several times a day. We’ll handle all flight planning and bookings for you, including the layover in Buenos Aires, and coordinate flight times with your itinerary.

Do I need a visa for Argentina?

Citizens of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland do not need a visa for Argentina for stays of up to 90 days. Upon entry, your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. You can find the latest entry requirements at the [U.S. Department of State](https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/de/service/laender/argentinien-node/argentiniensicherheit/201326). Different regulations may apply to other nationalities. Please contact us, and we will check this for you.

When is the best time to visit the Falkland Islands and South Georgia?

The expedition season in the South Atlantic runs from November to March. The breeding season begins in November and December: king penguins return to the beaches, albatrosses breed, and fur seals occupy their territories. In January and February, the colonies are at their peak, the chicks have hatched, and the days are longest. We recommend these months for South Georgia because that’s when you’ll experience the largest colonies in full swing.

What kind of clothing do I need for an expedition cruise in the South Atlantic?

Waterproof outerwear is mandatory—and we mean the full set: a waterproof jacket AND waterproof pants. During Zodiac landings, you will get wet from spray, rain, or while getting on and off the boat at the beach. Underneath, wear thermal underwear and a fleece, layering them according to the "onion" principle. Also bring waterproof gloves, a warm hat, sunscreen (UV radiation is strong at these latitudes), and binoculars. Rubber boots are provided on board, and you’ll receive an expedition parka as a gift that you can keep.

What are the sea conditions like on the crossing to South Georgia?

Crossings in the South Atlantic take place on the open sea and may involve rough seas, particularly in the Drake Passage between Ushuaia and the Falkland Islands. The MS Sea Spirit is equipped with Rolls-Royce stabilizers that keep the ship steady even in rough seas. A ship’s doctor is on hand with medication for seasickness. In our experience, most passengers find the crossing to be much calmer than expected. We recommend bringing travel sickness medication as a precaution.

Do I need special insurance for the expedition cruise?

Yes. Emergency evacuation insurance with a minimum coverage of USD 200,000 per person is required for participation. You will not be allowed to board without proof of this coverage. In addition, we strongly recommend international health insurance that includes repatriation coverage, as well as trip cancellation insurance. You can find information on suitable policies, for example, at [Hanse Merkur Travel Insurance](https://www.hmrv.de). We would be happy to advise you on the right coverage.

What animals can I see in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia?

The Falkland Islands and South Georgia are among the most wildlife-rich places on Earth. Five species of penguins breed on the Falkland Islands: king penguins, gentoo penguins, rockhopper penguins, Magellanic penguins, and macaroni penguins. In addition, there are black-browed albatrosses (70% of the world’s population breeds here), giant petrels, and caracaras. On South Georgia, you’ll stand amidst vast king penguin colonies, observe southern elephant seals, and see millions of Antarctic fur seals. During the crossings, wandering albatrosses and petrels accompany the ship, and with a bit of luck, you’ll spot humpback whales, fin whales, or orcas.

Which expedition ship will be used, and how big is it?

The MS Sea Spirit is a modern expedition ship with a capacity of up to 114 passengers. With ten Zodiacs (inflatable boats), you can reach even remote landing sites that are inaccessible to larger ships. On board, you’ll find comfortable suites, a restaurant, a lecture lounge, a library, outdoor decks for wildlife viewing, and an open bridge. The ship is equipped with Rolls-Royce stabilizers and is Ice Class 1D certified for voyages in polar waters.

Do I need to speak English for the expedition cruise?

The official language on board is English. All lectures, safety briefings, and announcements are conducted in English. Some members of the expedition team also speak German and are available to answer any questions you may have. The ship’s newsletter, daily itineraries, and menus are available in multiple languages. A basic knowledge of English is helpful but not required for participation.

What physical requirements do I need to meet for this expedition?

You must be able to get in and out of a Zodiac inflatable boat on your own. This requires basic mobility and sure-footedness, as we will be landing on natural beaches. You are required to complete a medical questionnaire before the trip. A doctor will be on board throughout the expedition. This trip is not suitable for people with limited mobility. If you have any doubts, please contact us; we will give you honest advice on whether the expedition is suitable for your needs.

What is included in the price of the expedition cruise?

The price includes: one night’s accommodation in Ushuaia with breakfast, all transfers, 17 nights on board in the selected cabin category, full board, an all-inclusive beverage package (soft drinks, house wine, house beer, house spirits, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate available around the clock), all shore excursions and Zodiac rides, guidance from the expedition team, onboard lectures, an expedition parka as a gift, rental rubber boots, Wi-Fi, port and IAATO fees, and a digital travel journal after the expedition.

Can I extend the Falkland Islands and South Georgia trip with a pre- or post-tour?

Yes, and we highly recommend it. Combine the expedition with one or two days in Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego National Park, Beagle Channel) or Buenos Aires. If you have more time, you should plan to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier near El Calafate or the Iguazú Falls. We put together customized pre- and post-trip itineraries and take care of flights, hotels, and transfers.
