+++ Up to 15% off select trips +++

Join us on an unforgettable expedition cruise to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula. This is a truly epic adventure through the remote Falkland Islands, the wildlife paradise of South Georgia, and the extraordinary landscapes of the Antarctic Peninsula. You’ll experience unforgettable encounters with untamed wildlife in a vast, dramatic, and spectacular setting; take a step back in time at historically significant sites; and be captivated by the rich diversity and contrasts that make these regions so compelling and unique.

The expedition team consists of experts from around the world who lead Zodiac cruises, shore excursions to remote coves, hikes, and wildlife viewing on the White Continent . This Antarctic expedition takes you to the must-see sights of the 7th continent and offers breathtaking natural and wildlife experiences .

Your cruise begins in Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina. You’ll then sail south to the Falkland Islands. Thousands upon thousands of king penguins breed here. You’ll also have the chance to see Magellanic, rock, and gentoo penguins. Be sure to enjoy the British atmosphere in Port Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands.

South Georgia has it all: huge, bizarre snow-capped mountains reaching heights of up to 3,000 m, countless glaciers, comical elephant seals lounging on the beaches, fur seals, and huge penguin colonies enjoying the seclusion of this uninhabited island. Visit a former whaling station or Sir Ernest Shackleton’s grave. Keep your camera handy at all times as albatrosses and petrels swoop overhead.

The Antarctic Peninsula awaits you with its geographical contrasts and overwhelming vastness. Embark on a Zodiac ride, hike on crystal-clear glaciers, get up close and personal with curious penguins, or enjoy this rugged landscape from a sea kayak. Antarctica will surprise and delight you time and time again. Unique moments guaranteed! On this Antarctic cruise, experience a sensory overload unlike any other.

As a special highlight, I recommend that you sign up for the sea kayaking trip or paddling tour right when you make your reservation (for an additional fee).

Itinerary Map for the “Explorers and Kings” Tour: Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctica

itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Ushuaia, Argentina
Your gateway to this expedition is Ushuaia, Argentina. Nestled in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, Ushuaia has a small-town atmosphere yet offers many shops, museums, cafés, and restaurants for you to enjoy before your trip. If you’re feeling adventurous, the nearby national park and the Martial Glacier offer numerous outdoor activities, such as hiking.

Day 2: Embarkation Day
As you board theship, anticipation builds. Meet and greet your fellow travelers and get acquainted with your ship. Since every Antarctic adventure offers new opportunities and experiences, embarkation day is just as exciting for your expedition team as it is for you. To ensure your comfort and safety on board, your team will also help make your wildlife dreams come true.

Day 3: At Sea
Your days at seaare filled with presentations and lectures led by your expedition team, who will prepare you for the wildlife that will greet you upon your arrival. Between presentations, spend time with your fellow passengers over a drink at the bar, or enjoy the fresh air and the view on the outdoor decks.

Days 4 & 5: Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)
Upon your arrival in the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), your camera will get its first real workout as you capture the rich wildlife and rugged atmosphere of this sub-Antarctic region. The archipelago consists of two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, which you’ll explore on daily Zodiac excursions and shore landings.

Port Stanley is often a popular stopover, as the town offers a unique British outpost atmosphere with eclectic charm. You’re free to explore the town, have a pint at the local pub, or visit its many churches and museums.

As for wildlife, the archipelago is home to Magellanic, gentoo, and southern rockhopper penguins. If you’re lucky, you might even spot king penguins here! You can see black-browed albatrosses as well as two endemic bird species—the flightless Falkland steamer duck and, possibly, the elusive Cobb’s wren.

Their team of instructors and specialists will be sure to teach you about the local flora and fauna, helping you make the most of your time in the Falklands.

Days 6 & 7: At Sea
As you cruise southeast toward South Georgia, you will officially enter Antarctic waters as soon as you cross the Antarctic Convergence, an invisible biological boundary that surrounds the continent. This convergence of oceans, where the cold Antarctic waters mix with the warmer waters of the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans, helps create the abundance of krill that attracts whales and seals to this part of the world. Your expedition team will let you know when you cross this invisible but important boundary and will also keep an eye out for the seabirds and marine life that frequent this area.

Days 8–11: South Georgia
This remote, mountainous island was a popular stopover for many historic Antarctic expeditions and was once a hub for whaling and seal hunting. Today, the island’s wildlife populations are recovering, but you’ll still see the remains of old whaling stations and other abandoned outposts.

An important and historic site is the grave of the great explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. You can visit his grave in the settlement of Grytviken, which is also home to an old whaling station, a museum, a gift shop, a church, and a small research station.

Although South Georgia’s history is a major draw for visitors to the island, it is truly unforgettable because of its incredible abundance of wildlife. Every time you set foot on South Georgia—often referred to as the “Galapagos of the Poles”—you’ll be amazed by the wondrous world of new and fascinating creatures.

One day you might see hundreds of thousands of king penguin pairs waddling along a beach, and the next day you might visit another beach teeming with thousands of fur seals or elephant seals. The grasslands, mountains, and beaches of South Georgia all play a vital role in the reproduction and survival of the island’s various species. Your expedition team will explain this delicate and interconnected relationship to you during your time here.

Days 12 & 13: At Sea
Say goodbye to the king penguins, because your next destination is Antarctica! Your days at sea will be filled with presentations, lectures, and workshops led by your expedition team, who will prepare you for the wildlife that will greet you upon your arrival.

If conditions permit, you will go ashore on the South Orkney Islands.

Days 14–17: South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula
The most common reaction upon reaching the White Continent is a sense of awe. The experience is indescribable, for few places are as untouched and unchanging as Antarctica.

You’ll discover that Antarctica is a land of extremes. One moment you’ll be overcome by a sense of complete isolation and silence, and the next you’ll be inspired by nature as a calving glacier plunges into a brilliant blue sea or a penguin waddles by to inspect your shoes.

Your expedition team will take care of you on every excursion, whether you’re out on a Zodiac, visiting a historic site, or spending time with penguin colonies. Gentoo, Adélie, and chinstrap penguins can be found here, as well as Weddell, fur, crabeater, and leopard seals. During a Zodiac ride, keep an eye out for Antarctic whales, which may give you the chance for an intimate encounter with these majestic animals. Every day and every excursion will introduce you to a new array of creatures that will entertain you and keep your camera busy.

As exciting as the Zodiac excursions and landings are, why not treat yourself to a truly special Antarctic experience by joining an optional kayaking tour (for an additional fee) or putting your inhibitions aside and taking the plunge into Antarctic waters!

Days 18 & 19: Crossing the Drake Passage
After more than two weeks of endless encounters with wildlife, your journey home begins. Crossing the Drake Passageis your unofficial rite of passage, marking the end of your Antarctic adventure.

Enjoy your final moments and celebrate with your shipmates. The bustling, crowded world awaits your return, so enjoy the silence of the sea while you still can.

Day 20: Disembarkation in Ushuaia
After breakfast on board the ship, it’s time to part ways and say goodbye to your expedition team. Airport transportation will be arranged for those departing on the first flights home. Other guests will be taken into town.

The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.

activities

PADDLE TOUR*

Glide through the pristine polar waters in an inflatable two-person sit-on-top kayak and experience the Arctic or Antarctic wilderness from a unique perspective. These stable and comfortable kayaks allow you to observe nature up close right on the water. Experienced guides lead the tour and, together with an additional safety officer, ensure your safety at all times.

KAYAKING*

The sea kayaking program is open to participants of all skill levels. However, some prior experience with sea kayaking is recommended in order to fully enjoy the experience in the polar regions. Kayaking offers a particularly immersive way to experience the unspoiled nature of the Arctic and Antarctic up close.

Traveling right at water level, you’ll discover fjords, glacier fronts, and impressive sea ice landscapes from a unique perspective. In small groups, like-minded travelers experience the polar world in a particularly intense and authentic way.

Depending on weather, ice, and logistical conditions, kayaking tours will be offered as often as possible during the voyage. Participants are typically transported from the ship to the starting point by Zodiac. After the tour, participants are also brought back by Zodiac. Some excursions also include shore landings, during which participants can explore the surrounding area on land.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP*

This program is designed for photographers of all skill levels. During the daily Zodiac excursions, participants receive priority access to the first group to go ashore. In small groups of no more than 16 people, the same photography guides accompany the excursions throughout the entire trip and provide valuable tips, personalized advice, and feedback on the photos taken.

In addition to unique opportunities to observe nature and wildlife, the program offers the ideal opportunity to specifically develop your photography skills and capture stunning images of the polar regions.
