The route follows the west coast of Spitsbergen northward, past glacier fronts that calve directly into the sea, to the edge of the polar pack ice 80 degrees north. Where the ice floes begin, polar bears hunt ringed seals. Twenty-four hours of midnight sun, walruses on rocky plateaus, and a landscape that has hardly changed since the last ice age.

The MS Sea Spirit carries a maximum of 114 passengers to fjords and landing sites that are inaccessible to large cruise ships. Zodiacs make the crossing daily, accompanied by an experienced expedition team.

The journey begins in Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world. To the south lies Hornsund, where glaciers calve into the sea and polar bears patrol the ice edge. Further north, Bellsund opens up with abandoned 17th-century whaling stations, and the Northwest Spitsbergen National Park features tidewater glaciers, reindeer in the tundra, and the seabird cliffs of Fuglesongen. On Prins Karls Forland, herds of walruses bask in the sun; in Ny-Ålesund stands the world’s northernmost research station and the historic mooring mast where Roald Amundsen tied up his airship in 1926 before his North Pole expedition. The highlight: the polar ice edge —depending on ice conditions, the MS Sea Spirit will venture as far north as possible.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Polar ice edge – As far north as the pack ice allows: between 80° and 82° latitude, the open water ends and the realm of the polar bears begins.
  • Hornsund and the Fast Ice – In June, fast ice still clings to the walls of Spitsbergen’s southernmost fjord, and in the silence between the glacier front and the drift ice, seals rest on the ice floes.
  • Herds of walruses on Prins Karls Forland – Hundreds of walruses lie on rocky plateaus along the island’s coast in Forlandet National Park, observed from a safe distance by Zodiac.
  • Tidal glaciers in Northwest Spitsbergen National Park – glacier fronts calve directly into the fjord waters, the ice thunders, and icebergs in every shade of blue drift past the MS Sea Spirit.
  • Ny-Ålesund – Located at 79 degrees north, it is the world’s northernmost permanently inhabited research station, featuring a museum, a historic airship mooring mast, and the world’s northernmost post office.
  • Bellsund and the History of Whaling – Along the fjord’s shores lie blubber-melting furnaces and the ruins of buildings from the Dutch and English whaling eras, when Spitsbergen was one of the busiest whaling grounds in the North Atlantic.
  • 24 hours of daylight – In June, the sun never sets in Svalbard, and every Zodiac trip becomes a photo tour bathed in golden, endless light.

itinerary

From Longyearbyen to the polar pack ice at 80 degrees north

Day 1 | Arrival in Longyearbyen

The expedition begins in Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world. After landing, a shuttle will take you to your hotel (included in the price). The rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish.

Longyearbyen lies on the shores of Adventfjord, surrounded by jagged mountains that gave the archipelago its name. Around 2,500 people from over 50 nations live here, in colorful wooden houses built on stilts above the permafrost. The Svalbard Museum tells the story of the archipelago, from the first whalers through coal mining to today’s polar research. Warning signs about polar bears line the streets, rifles lean against front doors, and snowmobiles are parked where bicycles would be elsewhere.

Day 2 | Embarkation in Longyearbyen

The morning is free for some final exploration of Longyearbyen. In the afternoon, you’ll board the MS Sea Spirit at the harbor. Settle into your cabin and get acquainted with the ship: the Oceanus Lounge for the daily lectures, the outdoor decks with views of the Arctic coastline, and the hot tub on the sun deck.

During the welcome cocktail reception, the captain introduces the expedition team. The MS Sea Spirit then sails out of Isfjorden into open water. Spitsbergen’s largest fjord is over 100 kilometers long. Along its shores lie abandoned mining settlements and glacier tongues that extend all the way to the water’s edge.

Days 3 and 4 | South Spitsbergen National Park and Hornsund

The MS Sea Spirit heads for Hornsund, the southernmost fjord on the west coast. Here, the glaciers of South Spitsbergen National Park extend all the way to the sea. In June, fast ice still clings to the fjord walls, and polar bears patrol the boundary between the ice and open water. The expedition team monitors the ice edge around the clock.

Aboard a Zodiac, you’ll cruise along the glacier fronts as they calve directly into the water. Chunks of ice drift by, seals rest on floating ice floes, and fulmars and kittiwakes circle above the water. Along the fjord shores lie the remains of old trapper huts where Norwegian fur trappers spent the Arctic winter.

In Bellsund, whale bones and oil-boiling furnaces bear witness to the whaling era of the 17th century. Back then, hundreds of ships from Holland, England, and the Basque Country would come to Spitsbergen every summer to hunt bowhead whales. On land, Arctic flowers grow among the bones: saxifrage, silverweed, and polar poppies.

Days 5 and 6 | Northwest Spitsbergen National Park

Northwest Spitsbergen National Park protects some of the most impressive fjords and glacier systems in the Arctic. Deep bays cut into the mountains, and at their ends, tidewater glaciers flow into the sea. The MS Sea Spirit navigates through narrow passages, passing floating icebergs in every shade of blue.

In June, millions of thick-billed guillemots, black guillemots, and common murres nest on the rocky islets and sheer cliffs of the national park. The noise and the smell are overwhelming, and the air is thick with birds. You’ll glide right beneath the cliffs in a Zodiac.

In North Isforden National Park, also along the route, Svalbard reindeer wander through the tundra—a smaller, stockier subspecies than their Scandinavian relatives. With a bit of luck, a polar fox may dart past among the rocks in search of bird eggs. A mosaic of lichens and Arctic mosses grows among the rocks, glowing in the midnight sun.

Days 7 and 8 | Prins Karls Forland and Ny-Ålesund

Off the west coast of Spitsbergen lies Prins Karls Forland, a narrow, elongated island in Forlandet National Park. At the southern tip, hundreds of walruses gather on rocky plateaus. Weighing up to 1,500 kilograms, with tusks up to a meter long, they lie close together and watch with astonishing calm as the Zodiacs glide past at a safe distance.

Further north, you’ll reach Ny-Ålesund at 79 degrees north, the northernmost year-round settlement on Earth. What was once a coal-mining settlement is now an international research station. Scientists from over ten nations conduct climate, atmospheric, and marine research here. A small museum tells the story of the North Pole expeditions led by Amundsen and Nobile, which set out from here. On the pier stands the mooring mast to which Amundsen’s airship Norge was tied in 1926 before its flight over the North Pole. And at the world’s northernmost post office, you can have your postcards stamped.

Days 9 and 10 | Polar ice edge

The MS Sea Spirit heads north as far as the ice allows. Depending on the season, the polar ice edge lies between 80° and 82° latitude. This is where the open water ends and the Arctic pack ice begins: an endless expanse of ice floes, pack ice, and open channels stretching all the way to the North Pole.

The ice edge is one of the most productive habitats in the Arctic. Plankton blooms in the nutrient-rich water; fish follow the plankton; seals follow the fish; and polar bears follow the seals. From the outer decks and via Zodiac, you can observe the polar bears’ hunting strategy: they wait patiently at the breathing holes of ringed seals or stalk resting seals across the ice. Ivory gulls, the rarest gulls in the Arctic, circle above the open water spots.

At these latitudes, the sun doesn’t set in June. The midnight sun remains above the horizon for 24 hours, bathing the ice in an otherworldly golden light. The silence on the pack ice is almost palpable; all that can be heard is the soft cracking and shifting of the ice floes.

Day 11 | Longyearbyen, Disembarkation

In the morning, the MS Sea Spirit arrives at the port of Longyearbyen. After breakfast on board, you will disembark. A guided city tour of Longyearbyen is included in the tour price: the old mining infrastructure, the church, and the view over Adventfjord. Afterward, a transfer will take you to the airport.

The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.

activities

Photo tour (included)

Passenger photographs Arctic flowers by the fjord on Spitsbergen

The Arctic in June offers lighting conditions that photographers can otherwise only recreate in a studio: 24 hours of daylight, the golden midnight sun over the pack ice, the blue of calving glaciers, and polar bears against a white icy backdrop. An experienced wildlife photographer on board offers practical tips on composition, focal length, and timing during lectures and while ashore. Whether it’s a close-up of a walrus on the rocks or a panorama of the glacier front backlit by the sun, he knows the best angles at every landing site and helps you make the most of every situation.

Sea kayaking among icebergs (additional charge applies)

Zodiac ride on turquoise waters off Spitsbergen

From a Zodiac, you can observe the coastline. From a kayak, you’re right in the middle of it all. The optional sea kayaking tour takes you in small groups through quiet fjords, past drifting icebergs, along rugged coastlines, and past glacier fronts. Paddle among icebergs, glide through the calm waters of sheltered bays, or follow the coast of Prins Karls Forland while walruses look down from their rocky ledges. No prior experience is necessary; instruction is provided on board.

Guided hikes (included)

A hiking group on a hill overlooking a glacier in Spitsbergen

At each landing site, the expedition team leads hikes through the Arctic tundra. Walk across soft moss, past Arctic flowers and herds of reindeer that continue grazing, unfazed. At Hornsund, you’ll hike along the glacier front; in Ny-Ålesund, you’ll follow in the footsteps of polar explorers; and on Prins Karls Forland, the trail leads you past walrus colonies at a safe distance. Hikes of all difficulty levels are available, and hiking poles are provided. The expedition team ensures the safety of every hike with armed guides to protect against polar bears.

Zodiac excursions (included)

Zodiac ride on turquoise waters off Spitsbergen

The sturdy Zodiac inflatable boats take you where no ship can dock: along calving glacier fronts in Hornsund, through quiet fjords dotted with drifting icebergs, past bird cliffs teeming with thousands of thick-billed guillemots, and to the polar ice edge, where bearded seals rest on ice floes. The expedition team navigates the boats safely through narrow passages and keeps a constant lookout for polar bears, walruses, and whales.

Polar Plunge (included)

The MS Sea Spirit off the glacier front on Spitsbergen

For the bravest passengers on board: The Polar Plunge is a tradition on Arctic expedition cruises. Under the supervision of the expedition team, take the plunge into the icy waters off Spitsbergen. The water temperature is around 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. Warm towels and hot cocoa will be provided. Participation is voluntary, but you’re sure to have an audience on the outer deck.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Longyearbyen?

Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen is located at 78 degrees north latitude and can be reached via Oslo or Tromsø. SAS and Norwegian offer daily flights from Oslo to Longyearbyen (approx. 3 hours). We’ll handle all flight planning and booking for you, including stopovers in Oslo or Tromsø, and coordinate flight times with your itinerary.

What are the chances of seeing polar bears on a cruise to Svalbard?

The chances of spotting polar bears are very high on this route, especially at the ice edge. The MS Sea Spirit heads directly to where the pack ice begins, as that is where polar bears hunt seals. In June and July, when the ice has retreated far enough to reach the ice edge, the chances of sightings are best. There are never any guarantees in nature, but most voyages record multiple polar bear sightings.

What is the polar ice edge, and why is the expedition going there?

The pack ice edge is the boundary between the open sea and the Arctic pack ice. This boundary is teeming with wildlife: polar bears hunt ringed seals, walruses rest on ice floes, and ivory gulls and fulmars circle above the water. The nutrient-rich zone at the ice edge also attracts bearded seals, belugas, and bowhead whales.

When is the best time to go on a Svalbard expedition cruise?

The season runs from June to August. In June, the midnight sun is at its highest, and the pack ice still extends far to the south. This is the best time to see polar bears at the ice edge. In July, the Arctic tundra blooms, and walruses gather at their resting spots. In August, the ice masses retreat, and the fjords are easier to navigate. Every month offers 24 hours of daylight.

What kind of clothing do I need for a Spitsbergen expedition cruise?

Waterproof clothing is mandatory: a waterproof jacket AND waterproof pants. At the ice edge and during Zodiac trips along the glaciers, you will be exposed to spray and cold. Wear thermal underwear and fleece underneath, using the layering principle. Bring warm, waterproof gloves, a hat, sunscreen (the reflection off ice and water is intense), and binoculars. Rubber boots are provided on board, and you will receive an expedition parka as a gift.

Do I need a visa for Svalbard?

Svalbard belongs to Norway but has special status: There are no visa requirements and no border controls. German, Austrian, and Swiss nationals need only a valid passport or national ID card. Since travel to Svalbard is via Norway (Oslo or Tromsø), Schengen rules apply there. You can find the latest information at the [U.S. Department of State](https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/de/aussenpolitik/laender/norwegen-node/norwegensicherheit/205878).

Do I need special insurance for the Svalbard expedition?

Yes. Emergency evacuation insurance with a minimum coverage of USD 200,000 per person is required for participation. In the remote Arctic, evacuation by helicopter can be extremely costly. In addition, we strongly recommend international health insurance that includes repatriation, as well as trip cancellation insurance. You can find suitable policies at [Hanse Merkur Travel Insurance](https://www.hmrv.de).

What animals can you see on Spitsbergen besides polar bears?

Svalbard is home to a rich variety of Arctic wildlife: walruses on Moffen and Poolepynten, bearded seals and ringed seals on ice floes, Svalbard reindeer on land, and arctic foxes in the tundra. Thick-billed guillemots, kittiwakes, and puffins nest on the bird cliffs. With a bit of luck, you may spot belugas, humpback whales, and minke whales in the waters. Ivory gulls and skuas hunt along the ice edge.

Which expedition ship is used on the Spitsbergen route?

The MS Sea Spirit is a modern expedition ship designed for up to 114 passengers and certified to Ice Class 1D for voyages in polar waters. With ten Zodiacs, you can reach remote fjords and safely approach glacier fronts and polar bears. On board, you’ll find comfortable suites, a restaurant, a lecture lounge, and outdoor decks. The Rolls-Royce stabilizers ensure a smooth ride.

How cold is it on a summer cruise to Svalbard?

Temperatures in summer range from 0 to 10 degrees Celsius. At the edge of the polar ice cap, temperatures can hover around freezing even when the sun is shining. In sheltered areas of the fjord and when the sun is out, temperatures can reach 8 to 10 degrees. The 24 hours of daylight under the midnight sun make the temperatures more bearable than expected.

What is included in the price of the Svalbard expedition?

The price includes: one night’s accommodation in Longyearbyen with breakfast, all transfers, all nights on board in the selected cabin category, full board, an all-inclusive beverage package, all shore excursions and Zodiac rides, guidance from the expedition team, onboard lectures, an expedition parka as a gift, rental rubber boots, Wi-Fi, and port fees.

Is a cruise to Svalbard dangerous because of the polar bears?

No. All landings are supervised by armed expedition team members who are trained in polar bear safety protocols. The area is surveyed before every landing. During Zodiac trips, the drivers maintain a respectful distance. The safety measures are strict and well-established. There is no increased risk to passengers.
