itinerary
We recommend that you arrive at least one day before departure to allow for any flight irregularities and possible baggage loss. We also recommend that you book your entire trip, including arrival and departure as well as pre- and post-program activities, through inventia so that we can intervene in the event of any irregularities.
Day 1: Largest city, largest island
You will land in Longyearbyen, the administrative center of Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago. Stroll through the former mining town, which offers fascinating sights such as its parish church and the Svalbard Museum. Although the landscape appears barren, more than a hundred plant species have been counted here. In the early evening, the ship leaves Isfjorden, where you may see the first minke whale of your journey.
Day 2: Route to Raudfjord
On your way to Raudfjord on the north coast of Spitsbergen, you will pass a vast fjord with glaciers – and perhaps even encounter ringed seals and bearded seals. The cliffs and coastline of this fjord are also home to thriving seabird colonies and lush vegetation, and offer the chance to see polar bears.
Day 3-4: Onward journey to East Greenland
Depending on the weather conditions, you may see the jagged edge of the East Greenland sea ice flashing before you. Keep an eye out for whales and migrating seabirds.
Day 5: Tundra, mountains, and icebergs
As you approach Greenland, you can sail through the sea ice into Foster Bay and land at Myggebugten. Behind the old hunter's hut, where Norwegian trappers hunted polar bears and arctic foxes in the first half of the 20th century, there is a vast tundra populated by musk oxen, while geese swim on the small lakes. From here, we sail through the Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord, surrounded by towering mountains and bright icebergs in the interior. Now it's time for your first long hike (6-7 hours). It starts at the Myggbukta station, leads into the Badlanddal valley, and then south to the Fangsthytte hut at Cape Bennet. A Zodiac travels ahead of the hiking group and parallel to the coast to look for bears. You will then travel through the Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord, which is surrounded by towering mountains and bright icebergs in the interior.
Day 6: Islands in the Antarctic Sound
You will reach Teufelschloss, a mountain with layered geology. On the other side of the fjord is Blomsterbugt and the planned landing site. In the afternoon, you will sail into the Antarctic Sound to reach the islands of Ruth, Maria, and Ella. Maria is the most likely place for a landing.
Day 7: The high peaks of the Alpefjord
In the morning, you will sail into Segelsällskapets Fjord, with the striped slopes of the Berzelius Mountains on its northern side. You will land on the southern shore, where ancient sedimentary formations lie right at your feet. A hike will take you close to a small lake with good chances of seeing musk oxen, arctic hares, and ptarmigans. In the afternoon, the ship enters Alpefjord, which owes its name to the pointed peaks that tower around it. Afterwards, you can take a Zodiac ride around the Gully Glacier, which once blocked access to the interior of these waters. As you venture deep into the fjord, you will experience a true Greenland adventure.
Day 8: Sights of the Arctic autumn
You will spend the first half of the day in Antarctic Havn, a vast valley where you can observe groups of musk oxen. At this time of year, the sparse vegetation is ablaze with the fiery colors of autumn.
Day 9: The world's largest fjord
You will now reach Scoresby Sund and sail along the glaciated Volquart Boons Kyst. You can also take a Zodiac trip along one of the glacier fronts and visit the basalt columns and ice formations of Vikingebugt. In the afternoon, we sail along the east coast of Milne Land among a multitude of huge icebergs. If it is possible to land at Charcot Havn, take a walk to the Charcot Glacier before continuing on to Bjørneøer.
Day 10: The colors of the Cape
The destination is a Zodiac trip near Sorte Ø, surrounded by icebergs. Their stark blue and white color contrasts sharply with the nearby sedimentary slopes. In the afternoon, you will travel through the northern part of Røde Fjord and on to Harefjord, where you may see musk oxen and warm autumn foliage.
Day 11: Gigantic icebergs, Arctic hares
In the morning, you will encounter colossal icebergs, some of which are over 100 meters high and more than a kilometer long. We will then land near Sydkap, from where you will have a beautiful view of Hall Bredning and polar hares. The long hike leads from Sydkap to Satakajik and shows you the remains of Thule winter houses built from whale vertebrae. In the evening, you will sail into Øfjord.
Day 12: Settlement at Scoresby Sound
Today, you will make a tundra landing on Liverpool Land, in Hurry Inlet. In the afternoon, you will stop at Ittoqqortoormiit, the largest settlement in Scoresby Sund with about four hundred inhabitants. At the post office, you can buy stamps for your postcards or simply stroll around and admire the sled dogs and the dried skins of seals and musk oxen. In the afternoon, you will sail south, past the picturesque landscapes of the Blosseville Coast.
Day 13: Marine life under the Northern Lights*
On a day at sea, you have the opportunity to watch whales and seabirds—and experience the magical Northern Lights* at night.
Day 14: The end of the journey in Akureyri – Reykjavík
Even the greatest adventures must come to an end. You will disembark in Akureyri, from where you will take a bus to the bus stop at the Harpa Concert Hall in Austurbakki, Reykjavík.
