itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Seville
Your tour guide will greet you at the airport. Wide boulevards along the Guadalquivir River await you during your scenic drive to your deluxe hotel in the Old Town. In the evening, you’ll take a short walk to the restaurant, where your welcome dinner awaits in a charming city mansion in the Old Town. (D)
Day 2: Seville
Enjoy a day off in Seville or take an optional excursion to the Archivo General de Indias. During your visit, you’ll learn fascinating facts about the history of Spanish expansion and the colonial era. This important archive in the heart of Seville is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses valuable records, letters, maps, and other documents that chronicle the history of Spain and its colonies from the 15th to the 19th century. In the afternoon, you’ll have free time before enjoying a delicious dinner. (D)
Day 3: Seville: UNESCO World Heritage Site
On your journey of discovery through Seville, you’ll marvel at, among other things, the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, the city’s landmark, the Giralda—once the minaret of the Almohad mosque—and the medieval Alcázar Royal Palace, one of the finest examples of Andalusian Mudéjar architecture. You’ll feel the magic of flamenco at Cristina Hoyos’ Flamenco Museum. A meal featuring local delicacies will fortify you for the upcoming train journey. Then it’s time to board and close the doors! In the late afternoon, you’ll board the legendary Al Ándalus special train at Santa Justa Station. Its Belle Époque-style décor, comfortable suite sleeping cars, spacious 1920s lounge cars, and culinary delights... Look forward to an enjoyable journey with five nights on board. After a warm welcome, you’ll settle into your comfortable compartment and enjoy a typical Andalusian dinner in the excellent onboard restaurant as the Al Ándalus rolls toward Córdoba. (FMA)
Day 4 Córdoba
Today, Córdoba awaits you, where Moorish Spain experienced its intellectual, cultural, and economic heyday. The achievements made here would continue to have a far-reaching influence long after, extending well beyond the borders of Andalusia. The Caliphate of Córdoba was established in the 10th century. At that time, approximately 500,000 people lived in Córdoba, which was then one of the largest cities in the known world. Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived together mostly in peace. During your tour of the old town, you’ll discover the city’s most significant architectural monument—the Mezquita with its fascinating forest of columns, formerly the main mosque and now a Christian cathedral. After a stroll through the old alleys of the former Jewish quarter, you’ll continue your journey on the Al Ándalus. In the evening, your train arrives in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Aranjuez in the province of Toledo. Since the 16th century, it has been one of the royal family’s summer residences—and Schiller’s Don Carlos also spent happy days here. (FMA)
Day 5 Toledo
Toledo not only enchants visitors with its charm, but also boasts a stunning location. The city’s churches, palaces, and houses with their oriental flair rise up on a granite hill surrounded on three sides by the deep gorge of the Tagus River. History you can touch—that is Toledo. It would be pointless to list all the sights, for Toledo is not a city where there are things to see—Toledo is a single, unified attraction. And for good reason, it has been designated in its entirety as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This makes Toledo the perfect destination for anyone who enjoys strolling through historic alleyways and soaking up the atmosphere of a romantic city where time seems to have stood still. Yet the capital of the Castile-La Mancha region offers more than just Spanish history. In the City of Three Cultures, as Toledo is known, Christians, Moors, and Jews have all left their mark. You’ll see, among other sights, the cathedral, the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, the Santa María la Blanca Synagogue, and El Greco’s famous painting The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in the Church of San Tomé. The afternoon is yours to spend at your leisure. While you enjoy dinner on board, the Al Ándalus rolls northward. (FMA)
Day 6 Ávila and León
After breakfast, the journey takes you deep into the heart of Castile and León to Ávila (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), whose imposing 11th-century fortifications are among the best-preserved medieval city walls in the world. The city walls enclose a true treasure trove of art. Concentrated within a small area at an altitude of 1,128 meters is everything that makes Castile so beautiful: Gothic mansions, winding alleys, magnificent Romanesque churches, and not to be forgotten: the city’s landmark, the imposing 2.5-kilometer-long city wall with its 28 mighty towers—testaments to Ávila’s incomparable history. In the afternoon, your special train arrives in Quintana Raneros. From here, a short excursion takes you to the historic episcopal city of León, one of the most significant stops for pilgrims on the Way of St. James en route to Santiago de Compostela. A highlight in León: your visit to the Gothic cathedral, which rises imposingly over the Plaza de Regla with its towers nearly 70 meters high. Continue by bus to Astorga, where the Al Ándalus awaits you. (FMA)
Day 7 Galicia: Fine wines and wild landscapes
Welcome to the Ribeira Sacra, a Spanish wine-growing region in the southeastern region of Galicia, near the Portuguese border. In the impressive Sil Canyon, with its gorges plunging up to 500 meters deep, an entertaining river cruise awaits you. You’ll be amazed by the wild beauty of the landscape, dominated by vineyards, mountains, and the waters of the Sil River. Did you know that Spain’s oldest Christian communities are located here? As early as 1,500 years ago, monastic orders and hermits settled here to devote themselves to the perfection of meditation and contemplation over the centuries. From here, you’ll continue on the Al Ándalus to Ourense on the Miño River, where you’ll visit the historic city center. (FMA)
Day 8 Santiago de Compostela
The Al Ándalus travels north through Galicia’s enchanting mountain landscape and then reaches Santiago de Compostela, the final destination of the Way of St. James and the destination of thousands of pilgrims who come here to visit the tomb of St. James the Apostle. Together with your tour guide, you’ll stroll through the narrow streets of this magical place. The city’s historic center has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But that’s not the only reason to visit Santiago. Narrow alleys alternate with squares and centuries-old granite buildings, some of which date back to the Middle Ages. Particularly outstanding is the cathedral with its majestic façade. (FMA)
Day 9: Santiago de Compostela or Rías Baixas: Spain’s fjord coast
This day is yours to explore on your own. Alternatively, you can join an optional excursion: Amid fabulously beautiful forests, the Atlantic Ocean cuts deep into the land, forming the four narrow inlets known as the Rías Baixas. Beautiful beaches and untamed nature, as well as a unique culinary scene with dishes to suit every taste, await you in this part of Galicia. Folk traditions are also still very much alive here: According to legend, the so-called Meigas and the Santa Compaña—witches and ghosts—live in the densely forested mountains. You’ll definitely be enchanted by the fjord coastline with its countless secluded offshore islands. Enjoy your boat trip to the Cíes Islands (weather permitting)! This paradise-like archipelago is the jewel of the Islas Atlánticas National Park. The waterways and rocks are home to a diverse array of flora and fauna. A stroll on the fine sand or a quick dip in the clear water will round out your relaxing morning. In the afternoon, you’ll return to Santiago de Compostela. Here you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of the medieval city on your own. Or, on an optional excursion with your tour guide, you can discover the city’s green side. (FA)
Day 10 Return flight to Germany
During the day, transfer to the airport and return flight to Germany. (B)
