Antarctic Circle with Falkland Islands and South Georgia

Along the Antarctic Peninsula, crossing the Antarctic Circle

Antarctic Circle with Falkland Islands and South Georgia

from/to Buenos Aires

23 days (22 nights)

MS Ultramarine

23 days (22 nights) Antarctic expedition from/to Ushuaia with the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Shetland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula, and Antarctic Circle.

On this Antarctic expedition, which is already a unique experience in itself, you will travel a little further along the Antarctic Peninsula to the Antarctic Circle. On the way there, where few travelers have gone before you, you will feel like you are at the true end of the world as you gaze out over the seemingly endless ice-covered landscapes.

Dramatic formations of ice and snow will accompany you as you observe the unique wildlife, including whales, seals, and penguins. Whether it's humpback whales alongside the expedition ship, cute seals in a remote bay, penguins hopping from an ice floe into crystal-clear water, or an albatross gliding over the sea ice, you will experience a sensory overload unlike any other on this Antarctic expedition.

There are not many places in the world that are as bizarre and magical as Antarctica. Breathtaking moments are guaranteed along the Antarctic Peninsula .

Keep your camera or binoculars handy as you search for whales, penguins, and bizarre ice landscapes from a Zodiac. Penguins and leopard seals lounge on the beaches, while icy plateaus rise behind snow-capped mountain peaks in the background.

Crossing the Antarctic Circle is something very special. You can consider yourself lucky, because most Antarctic cruises don't travel this far south.

As a special highlight, I recommend that you register for sea kayaking, paddling tours , or camping (subject to a fee) when you make your booking.

itinerary

Antarctic Circle with Falkland Islands and South Georgia

Day 1: Arrival in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Upon arrival in this magnificent city, renowned for its architecture and rich European heritage, you will be transferred to your group hotel (hotel accommodation prior to the expedition is included in the mandatory transfer package).

Day 2: Flight to Ushuaia and embarkation
After an early breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the airport and board a private charter flight to Ushuaia, Argentina.

Upon arrival, you will be transferred from the airport to a central location in the city center, where you will have time to explore the picturesque harbor town on your own before heading to the pier.

After embarking in the late afternoon, you will sail through the historic Beagle Channel, which crosses the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the extreme south of South America. Be excited as you say goodbye—the next time you see land, you will be in a wildlife wonderland!

Day 3: At Sea
Your days at seawill be filled with presentations and lectures led by your expedition team, who will prepare you for the wildlife that will greet you upon arrival. Between presentations, spend time with your fellow passengers over a drink at the bar or enjoy the fresh air and views on the outside decks.

Days 4 & 5: Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)
Upon arrival in the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), your camera will get its first real workout as you capture the rich wildlife and rugged feel of this sub-Antarctic region. The archipelago consists of two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, which you will explore on daily Zodiac excursions and landings. Port Stanley is often a popular landing site, as the town offers a unique British outpost feel, complete with eclectic charm.

You can explore the town, enjoy a pint at the local pub, or visit numerous churches and museums. The archipelago is rich in wildlife, especially birds, and is home to Magellanic, rockhopper, and southern rockhopper penguins. If you're lucky, you might even spot king penguins here! You can expect to see black-browed albatrosses and two endemic bird species—the flightless Falkland steamer duck and possibly the elusive Cobb's wren. Your team of lecturers and specialists will be sure to educate you about the local flora and fauna, helping you make the most of your time in the Falklands.

Days 6 & 7: At Sea
As you sail southeast toward South Georgia, you will officially enter Antarctic waters once you cross the Antarctic Convergence, an invisible biological boundary that surrounds the continent. This convergence of oceans, where the cold Antarctic waters mix with the warmer waters of the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic oceans, leads to an abundance of krill, which in turn attracts whales and seals to this part of the world. Your expedition team will notify you when you cross this invisible but important boundary and will also keep an eye out for the seabirds and marine life that frequent this area.

Days 8–11: South Georgia
This remote, mountainous island was a popular stopover for many historic Antarctic expeditions and was once a haven for whaling and seal hunting. Today, the island's wildlife populations are recovering, but you will still see remnants of old whaling stations and other abandoned outposts. A significant and historic site is the grave of the great explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.

You can visit his grave in the settlement of Grytviken, which also houses an old whaling station, a museum, a souvenir shop, a church, and a small research station. Although South Georgia's history is a major attraction of the island, it is the enormous wealth of wildlife that will surely captivate you and your shipmates the most. Every landing you make on South Georgia, often referred to as the Galapagos of the South Pole, will open your eyes to the wondrous life of new and captivating creatures.

One day you might see hundreds of thousands of king penguin pairs waddling along a beach, and the next day you might visit another beach littered with thousands of fur seals or elephant seals. The grasses, mountains, and beaches of South Georgia all play an important role in the reproduction and survival of the various species on the island. Your expedition team will explain this fragile and interwoven relationship during your time here.

Days 12 & 13: At Sea
Say goodbye to the king penguins, because your next destination is Antarctica! Your days at sea will be filled with presentations, lectures, and workshops led by your expedition team, who will prepare you for the wildlife that will greet you upon your arrival.

Days 14–16: South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula
The experience is difficult to put into words, but the most common reaction upon reaching the white continent is a feeling of awe and wonder. You will discover that Antarctica is a land of extremes: one moment you are overcome by a feeling of complete silence and solitude, the next you are laughing at the comical antics of a curious penguin.

Zodiac rides, visits to historic sites, and, of course, encounters with seals and penguins will bring a smile to your face every day. You may spot the fearless penguin eater, the leopard seal, or perhaps come face to face with an Antarctic minke whale during a Zodiac ride. Each day and each excursion will present you with a new collection of creatures that will delight you and keep your camera busy. If you want more, treat yourself to an optional kayaking adventure (reserve in advance when booking your trip) or a dip in Antarctic waters!

Days 17 & 18: Antarctic Circle
Crossing the Antarctic Circle is an impressive achievement, as few expeditions venture this far south. If conditions allow you to cross this famous line at 66°33′ S, you will join the first explorers who ventured here, and you can raise a glass and take pride in having made it to a part of the world that very few people visit. This is the rugged Antarctic, home to the midnight sun and fantastic iceberg sightings.

Days 19 & 20: Northward along the
Peninsula
If you haven't had enough of Antarctic wildlife and icebergs, you'll surely be satisfied when you head for the Drake Passage. On your journey north along the western Antarctic Peninsula, you will continue to take Zodiac excursions. Your expedition team will always be on the lookout for species of seabirds, seals, and whales that you may have missed on your journey south.

Days 21 & 22: Crossing the Drake Passage
After more than three weeks of unique wildlife encounters and remarkable landscapes, your journey home begins. Crossing the Drake Passageis your unofficial rite of passage, putting the final stamp on your Antarctic adventure.

Day 23: Disembarkation in Ushuaia and flight to Buenos Aires
You will arrive in Ushuaia in the morning and disembark after breakfast. The mandatory transfer package includes a small taste of Patagonia with a tour of Tierra del Fuego National Park before you are taken to the airport to board the group charter flight to Buenos Aires.

activities

KAYAKING (FOR AN ADDITIONAL FEE)
Imagine gliding across the surface of a bay surrounded by icebergs and glaciers. The kayaking tour is a great way to explore your surroundings in a truly memorable way. A small group of kayakers will set out several times per trip as an alternative to shore excursions or Zodiac rides.

The number of opportunities for kayaking depends on the weather and is only available in calm conditions. Previous kayaking experience is required, and you must be able to exit the kayak into the water in order to participate. Beginners who are interested in kayaking should consider participating in the paddle tour.

PADDLE TOUR (FOR AN ADDITIONAL FEE)
If you’re interested in kayaking but are a bit less experienced when it comes to sea kayaking, a paddle tour is the perfect option for you. Paddling in the stable sit-on-top kayaks is perfect for anyone with little or no kayaking experience. On calm days, rotating groups of passengers are selected, and experienced tour guides are always on hand to provide instructions and help you connect with the Arctic Ocean.

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING (FOR AN ADDITIONAL FEE)

SUP combines the immersive experience of kayaking with the unique perspective of stand-up paddleboarding. However, if you prefer, you can also kneel, sit, or even lie down and gaze up at the azure sky above Antarctica. Thanks to their wide shape and the fins at the stern, SUP boards are very stable.

With a little practice, participants can focus entirely on the stunning surroundings instead of watching their feet. Imagine gentoo penguins gliding beneath your board, or making eye contact with a Weddell seal resting on an ice floe as you paddle by.

Both on board and on the water, guests receive a detailed briefing from a certified SUP guide. In addition, a safety support boat (a Zodiac) remains nearby at all times to provide assistance if needed.

EXCLUSIVE HELICOPTER LANDING (FOR AN ADDITIONAL FEE)
Imagine setting foot in a region of Antarctica that can only be safely reached by helicopter. Together with a small group of fellow travelers and expert guides, you’ll board one of the Ultramarine’s two twin-engine helicopters to fly to an exclusive area of the South Pole that is inaccessible by ship.

Look forward to breathtaking bird's-eye views during the flight, and once you arrive, simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the splendor of Antarctica from the "best seat in the house": glacier amphitheaters, breathtaking peaks, and much more.

You will travel in groups of 12 people with no more than 4 groups (48 guests) per landing, giving you time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the polar environment. Afterwards, you will be picked up by the helicopters at the same location and returned to Ultramarine.

Each helicopter landing experience is individually tailored by your expedition team, taking into account the conditions and capacity of the location.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP (FOR AN ADDITIONAL FEE)

This program is designed for photographers of all skill levels. During the daily Zodiac excursions, participants receive priority access to the first group to go ashore. In small groups of no more than 16 people, the same photography guides accompany the excursions throughout the entire trip and provide valuable tips, personalized advice, and feedback on the photos taken.

In addition to unique opportunities to observe nature and wildlife, the program offers the ideal opportunity to specifically develop your photography skills and capture stunning images of the polar regions.
