When the first snow falls in October and the first ice slowly forms in Hudson Bay, polar bears are filled with eager anticipation: when will the hunting season finally begin? At the remote Dymond Lake Ecolodge, you are right in the middle of polar bear country, and every excursion offers the chance of an encounter with the kings of the Arctic. With a little luck, you can sniff each other right through the fence of the lodge. When the polar bear's breath becomes visible in the clear polar air, you can look it straight in the eyes or just reach out your hand to its thick fur – then you are as close to these fascinating predators as few people ever get to experience.
While trekking through the tundra, you may also encounter Arctic hares hopping across the frost-covered ground, foxes gliding silently through the twilight, snowy owls watching over their territory, or even the shy wolverine.
With winter approaching, the days in the Arctic are getting significantly shorter and the setting sun bathes the sky in spectacular colors early on. Luxury in the Arctic means cozy evenings by a crackling fireplace, tundra-inspired cuisine, and exquisite Canadian wines. Your polar bear safari becomes an immersive experience thanks to your guides' entertaining insights into the complex ecosystem of the Arctic. If you enjoy slipping into your highly functional Arctic gear even at night, it's for the magical aurora borealis dancing across the sky. When the Arctic awakens a few hours later in the fresh morning light, complete silence still reigns over the seemingly endless expanse.
On a Tundra Buggy® excursion, you no longer encounter polar bears at eye level, but explore the wilderness and its inhabitants from a panoramic perspective.

itinerary
Your journey begins in Winnipeg, where you will spend a relaxing night at the elegant The Grand by Lakeview Hotel, located directly at the airport.
Before that, at 5 p.m., you will receive your winter equipment, ensuring you are perfectly prepared for the coming days in the Arctic wilderness. Afterwards, you will get to know your tour guide and fellow travelers over dinner in a relaxed atmosphere. Exciting initial information will get you in the mood for the experiences ahead.
Today, you will first fly to Churchill, where you will be met at the airport and given brief information about the morning transfers. A small plane will then take you to Dymond Lake Ecolodge.
The short but spectacular flight takes you over the historic Churchill River and continues northwest along the rugged coastline of Hudson Bay. The untamed landscape below is home to moose, wolves, and, of course, the impressive polar bears. Keep your eyes peeled: with a little luck, you may spot the first wild animals from the air.
Upon arrival at Dymond Lake, you will be given an introductory tour of the lodge before checking into your room and enjoying lunch together. After a comprehensive briefing about your stay in polar bear territory, nothing stands in the way of your first excursion, and you set off on your first guided hike through the rugged coastal landscape.
Later, warm up in the lodge with an interesting slide show about the diverse wildlife of Hudson Bay and relax as you end the day with dinner and later by the fireplace, listening to your hosts and guides talk about life and the challenges of the Canadian Arctic.
It is quite possible that after dark you will be able to marvel at the magical northern lights: Dymond Lake Ecolodge has an aurora observation tower for optimal viewing.
Days 3 to 4: Tracking polar bears in the tundra
Every morning after a warm breakfast, your guides will present the day's schedule. This is primarily based on the current location of the polar bears around the lodge. To ensure that you can almost touch the thick fur of these majestic kings of the Arctic and take photos from close up, the days at Dymond Lake Ecolodge are individually tailored. During the guided hikes, you will always have plenty of time to marvel at the breathtakingly vast landscape and fascinating Arctic wildlife and capture it in impressive pictures.
Back at the lodge, you are still far away from civilization, in the middle of the wilderness of Hudson Bay – but your accommodation envelops you in pure comfort as you enjoy an aperitif in front of the fireplace . At dinner, traditionally inspired cuisine from the wild tundra is served, before you can listen to exciting lectures from your experienced guides later on.
Nocturnal polar bears and the veils of the aurora borealis dancing across the night sky fill the barren tundra with life even after sunset. But you can still enjoy a relaxing night's sleep: our team will keep watch for you and gently wake you when a curious polar bear approaches the lodge fence at night or when the colors in the sky reach their peak.
From 2027 onwards, you will stay one day longer at the lodge (days 3-5), and the rest of the itinerary will be pushed back by one day.
After another hearty breakfast at the lodge, you will fly back to Churchill. Have your cameras ready, as the flight over the wilderness offers great opportunities for impressive aerial photography. Take another deep breath as you take in the vastness of the Arctic.
Back in Churchill, spend the day on a guided tour of the town. Discover Churchill's fascinating history as a port town and former military base. Your tour will take you to highlights such as the Parks Canada exhibit, the Itsanitaq Museum, and the famous "Polar Bear Jail, " a holding facility for polar bears that have attracted attention. Along the way, your guide will also show you large-scale murals created as part of the 2016 SeaWalls Mural Festival, which have since turned Churchill into an open-air gallery.
Before dinner together, there is still plenty of time to browse for beautiful souvenirs in Churchill's individual boutiques.
You will spend the night in Churchill at the new Blueberry Inn Lodge with exclusive comfort.
Day 6: Back to the polar bears in the Tundra Buggy® – and then on to Winnipeg
The bus takes you out of the "polar bear capital" and into the tundra of Manitoba. There, you board a classic Tundra Buggy®: from its protected and heated interior, you can once again get up close to the predators and experience firsthand how their enormous paws touch the frozen ground, how the bears stretch their snouts toward the sun, or how they shake the snow out of their fur. You will also receive your lunch today during the excursion in the middle of the tundra.
In the evening, you will board your return flight to Winnipeg. Upon arrival, you will collect your luggage and proceed directly through the arrivals hall to The Grand Hotel, where you will spend the night after this intense day among polar bears.
After a restful night, you board your flight home. Your thoughts linger a little longer with the polar bears – the intense encounters with these awe-inspiring kings of the Arctic were simply too thrilling.

Activities & highlights of your Arctic discovery trip
Polar bear watching on Hudson Bay
In autumn, polar bears gather on the coast of Hudson Bay to wait for sea ice to form. Together with your guide, you will set out in search of these Arctic hunters in the tundra of Manitoba and along the coast of Hudson Bay. The polar bears also regularly visit your lodge, so you can observe them directly through the panoramic window or from behind the protective fence. Once you've seen their thick fur and impressive paws up close, you'll understand why polar bears are also known as the "kings of the Arctic. "
Sightseeing in Churchill, Manitoba
The small town of Churchill is located 1,000 kilometers north of Winnipeg, the last outpost on the edge of the Arctic wilderness. In this remote location, the residents cultivate a strong sense of community as well as the culture and history of the region, which was once an important base for the Hudson's Bay Company. On a personalized tour of Churchill, you can gain a deep insight into Inuit culture at the Itsanitaq Museum and feel the local connection to Arctic nature as you view the SeaWalls Murals. A detour to the Polar Bear Jail, a shelter for polar bears that have attracted attention, highlights how closely life in Churchill is intertwined with the surrounding wilderness.
aurora borealis
On 300 days a year, the magical Northern Lights dance across the Arctic sky. Away from artificial light sources, you can watch this colorful spectacle directly from the Dymond Lake Ecolodge. Either from the warmth of the lodge through the panoramic windows or from the sheltered outdoor area on the observation tower. So that you don't miss out on a good night's sleep, the lodge staff keep a close eye on the night sky and gently wake you as soon as the spectacle begins.
Tundra Buggy® Tour
The Tundra Buggy® was specially designed for the demanding Arctic terrain. This powerful vehicle will take you safely and comfortably to places far away from civilization, where you can get incredibly close to wild animals such as polar bears and caribou. Your full-day Tundra Buggy® tour starts near Churchill, with the exact route determined by the whereabouts of the polar bears. To give you plenty of time for intensive observation and photography, you will also have lunch out in the tundra on this day. While you have to keep a safe distance from polar bears when trekking in the tundra, you can relax in the Tundra Buggy® and watch as the kings of the Arctic come closer and closer to your vehicle.
Lectures & Photo Shows
During quiet evenings at the lodge, you will have the opportunity to attend lectures and slide shows and learn more about the unique geology, flora, and fauna of the Arctic region. This will give your experiences and encounters with wildlife in the wilderness even greater meaning.
Ethical wildlife viewing
The coastline of Hudson Bay is pure, untouched wilderness and the natural habitat of many wild animals such as polar bears, wolves, caribou, black bears, and arctic foxes. The adjacent Arctic bays are home to seals, ringed seals, and even beluga whales during the summer months. The combination of the three surrounding ecosystems—Hudson Bay, taiga, and tundra—creates a true paradise for cold-loving creatures.
An untouched corner of the world where nature is still allowed to be natural.
What is ethical wildlife viewing?
Ethical wildlife viewing involves observing wild animals in their natural habitat without disturbing or influencing their instinctive behavior.
In practice, you must therefore observe the following principles:
Getting around on foot:
- The excursions are usually conducted on foot in order to approach the wild animals quietly and unobtrusively. Although this means covering long distances on foot, it is the only way to protect the rich ecosystem with your small footprint.
Keep your distance: Better safe than sorry
- Cute and fluffy are definitely adjectives that can be used to describe polar bears. However, they are the largest land-based predators on earth and can quickly feel threatened. To ensure the safety of these frosty predators and your own, you must maintain a minimum distance of 100 meters. If a curious polar bear does stray into your vicinity, the guides have various deterrent measures at their disposal to safely de-escalate the situation.
Noise reduction:
- Psst! Polar bears are very sensitive to noise and are startled even by the simple creaking of wood.
As soon as a polar bear approaches the lodge, you should remain calm and, for example, turn off the sound of the shutter when taking photos. This way, both you and your wild visitors can enjoy the experience undisturbed.
No drones:
- As tempting as it may sound to film these majestic animals from high above, you should refrain from using them. Flying drones are a visual and acoustic stimulus for polar animals and expose them to avoidable stress.
No perfume:
- Polar bears have highly sensitive noses and can detect smells from miles away. To avoid irritating the bears, you should therefore refrain from wearing perfume.
Do not feed wild animals:
- Feeding wild animals can trigger a dependency on humans and, in extreme cases, can even be fatal.
Please note:
Northern lights are a natural phenomenon. We cannot guarantee their occurrence.
You travel to the untouched Arctic regions of Canada to observe the majestic wildlife. Our mission is to offer you safaris that have minimal impact on the environment and wildlife. The safety of travelers and the integrity of the animals are our top priorities.
To ensure this, our customers travel in small groups and are accompanied by experienced nature guides. The daily program is flexible and depends on the current movements of the wild animals, the tides, and the weather.
inventia and our local partner accept no liability for unforeseen events ("force majeure") that affect the sighting of wild animals in their natural environment. Although our travel itineraries and content are the result of many years of experience, we cannot guarantee the extent or diversity of animal sightings.
Weather conditions, population density, behavior patterns, and migrations of other wildlife are some factors that can influence the behavior and activity of animals. Therefore, there is a possibility that the desired wildlife may not be sighted. While this is unlikely, it is not impossible.
Due to the remote location of your destination in the Arctic, flight irregularities are possible due to rapidly changing weather conditions. It is important to remain flexible on this type of expedition trip. We will always arrange alternatives for you.
Be aware that traveling to remote regions of Canada can involve risky activities such as polar bear encounters, which may pose risks to your health. These experiences are vastly different from visits to the zoo or Disney World. Please follow the instructions of our local partners and guides at all times. Any deviation from these instructions is at your own risk.
