+++ 5% Ermäßigung bei Neubuchung bis 31.10.2026 +++

In October, an almost palpable anticipation dominates the rugged coastline of Hudson Bay: bathed in the soft golden light of the Arctic autumn, nature is rapidly preparing for the approaching winter. Impressive encounters with animals in the midst of untamed wilderness allow you to experience the quiet grandeur of the far north and its pure beauty so unfiltered that you sit in front of the crackling fireplace in the evening with a deep sense of gratitude.

Around Seal River Heritage Lodge —where you will spend four nights far away from civilization— polar bears patrol the coastline, patiently waiting for the sea ice that is vital to their survival to form. The white fur of these majestic hunters shines all the more brightly against the barren autumnal colors of the tundra. When you look into the confident eyes of the kings of the Arctic at close range, you glimpse the soul of the Arctic.

Your second stop for four nights—the Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge —can be reached after a scenic flight over York Factory, the former headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company. Around your second ecolodge, the Arctic expands the scenery to include boreal forest. Between taiga, tundra, and icy coastline, polar bears share their habitat with wolves, arctic foxes, and a diverse bird life that has long since donned its winter plumage. Snowy owls silently watch over the scene, through which almost invisible ptarmigans and snow hares scurry. On each of the daily expeditions around this outpost at the edge of the continent, the Arctic surprises you with new magnificent photo opportunities.

You can also observe the special moods of nature between the last traces of summer and the relentless frost of the polar winter from the comfort of the panoramic windows of your Ecolodge – as well as the magical colors of the Northern Lights, which dance across the starry polar sky more and more often in autumn.

itinerary

Day 1: Getting in the mood & coming together in Winnipeg

Your journey begins in Winnipeg, where you will spend a restful night at our preferred hotel, The Grand by Lakeview, located right at the airport.

Before that, you will receive your winter equipment at 5 p.m. Then, during dinner, you will get to know the other members of your tour group and receive initial information about the itinerary for your upcoming expedition into the wilderness.

Day 2: By seaplane to Seal River Heritage Lodge

Well rested, you will first fly to Churchill. There you will be met and given all the important information about your connecting flight to Seal River Heritage Lodge. You will reach the lodge after a short scenic flight over the vast expanses of Hudson Bay. After a warm welcome from your hosts and guides, you will check into your room and can relax in your accommodation far away from civilization.

Afterwards, enjoy a delicious lunch before your guides familiarize you with the most important safety guidelines for encounters with polar bears. Then you will set off on your first hike into the Arctic wilderness – your first opportunity to experience the fascinating wildlife up close.

Days 3 to 5: Following in the footsteps of polar bears & nights under the Northern Lights

You will begin the next three days at Seal River Heritage Lodge with a hearty hot breakfast. Then you will set off on a morning excursion. For several hours, you will explore the vast tundra in search of polar bears and other Arctic wildlife. Back at the lodge, a freshly prepared lunch will be waiting for you.

Well fed and refreshed, you set off on another hike in the afternoon. Your guides know where the best chances are for close encounters with animals.

Your evenings begin with fine appetizers, followed by a tundra-inspired menu. Afterwards, you can relax and unwind in the cozy lounge, where your experienced guides will entertain you with exciting presentations about the fascinating interrelationships of the Arctic ecosystem.

The night is yours – at your own pace. Meanwhile, your guides keep a constant eye on the night sky above the lodge and gently wake you as soon as the spectacular glow of the Northern Lights illuminates the Arctic sky.

Days 6 to 9: Even more exciting wildlife viewing around Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge

Now it's time for the second stop on your lodge expedition: Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge is located just under 150 miles southeast of Churchill. The approximately 90-minute flight takes you over York Factory, once the central trading post for the historic fur trade in this remote region.

Upon arrival at Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge, you will once again receive a warm welcome from your hosts.

The days at Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge are also packed with exciting wildlife viewing opportunities. The wildlife around Nanuk is particularly diverse: in addition to polar bears, wolves, moose, and arctic and red foxes are among the inhabitants of this unique landscape.

Your daily excursions will mostly take you along the coast— to the tidal flats and the shores of Hudson Bay. You will travel partly on foot and partly in specially equipped off-road vehicles that are optimally designed for this challenging environment. The routes vary, but one thing is certain: there will be plenty of time to observe and photograph polar bears and the diverse wildlife of this region at your leisure.

Your evenings at Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge will be similar to those at Seal River Lodge: relaxed conversations, well-deserved relaxation by the fireplace, sharing photos and experiences, and informative and entertaining presentations by your guides, who will give you deeper insights into the fascinating life at the Arctic Circle.

Day 10: Discover Churchill & return flight to Winnipeg

After a hearty final breakfast at the lodge, you will board your small plane back to Churchill. Have your cameras ready, because the return flight offers another excellent opportunity to take impressive aerial photos of the seemingly endless expanse below you.

Once you arrive in Churchill, you will spend the day with an experienced tour guide on a round trip through the city. You will learn more about Churchill's rich history as a seaport and former military base. During the tour, you will visit the Parks Canada exhibition, the Itsanitaq Museum, and the famous Polar Bear Jail, a shelter for polar bears that have attracted attention. On the way there, your guide will also show you large-scale murals that were created in the city in 2016 as part of the SeaWalls Mural Festival.

Before dinner together, you will have plenty of time to browse for souvenirs in Churchill's small shops.

In the evening, you will fly to Winnipeg. From there, you will proceed directly through the arrivals hall to The Grand Hotel, where you will spend the night.

Day 11: Back home

Today, you must pack your bags and board your flight home—but the deep impressions of the Arctic wilderness will stay with you. And your photo collection will be enriched with many impressive images.

PLEASE NOTE: The daily itineraries described here are for your guidance only. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, but also in order to respond to current circumstances regarding wildlife viewing. The expedition leader will determine the final itinerary. Flexibility is of utmost importance when traveling in unspoiled nature.

Further information

You will stay here: Seal River Heritage Lodge | 4 nights

60 km northwest of Churchill

Your comfortable lodge for the first part of your Arctic expedition is located on the seemingly endless coast of Hudson Bay. The Seal River Heritage Lodge is located near the Seal River estuary and—remote and far away from crowds and the nearest town—is the ideal starting point if you want to observe wild polar bears in their natural habitat.

Spectacular photos of wildlife and the northern lights can be taken from the secure grounds. The tower with its viewing platform offers an exclusive view of the action.

The accommodation has eight double rooms with private bathrooms, which are far enough away from the common areas that you can retreat and relax when needed.

In front of the lounge's open fire, accompanied by the soothing crackling of the wood, you can relax with a glass of Canadian wine and a book from the lodge library.

SUSTAINABILITY is a top priority here: the lodge is powered by solar energy and uses greywater recycling and biodegradable cleaning and hygiene products. Consistent waste management is also one of the Ecolodge's environmental measures.

You will stay here: Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge | 4 nights

With its rustic charm, Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge is one of the most renowned National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World. It is just a stone's throw away from the pristine Arctic waters of Hudson Bay. Turn your gaze and it wanders over Canada's boreal coniferous forest. When majestic polar bears or other curious wildlife such as moose or black bears come by, you can almost feel their breath through the secure lodge fence. At night, the colorful northern lights can often be seen in the lodge's protected outdoor area.

The eight comfortable guest rooms with private bathrooms are spread across two wings that are directly connected to the main building. From the cozy sitting areas, you can enjoy panoramic views of the vastness of Hudson Bay through the large windows. After an eventful day in the tundra, relax in the lounge in front of the crackling fireplace – in good company or for a lecture by your experienced guides.

Ethical wildlife viewing

The coastline of Hudson Bay is pure, untouched wilderness and the natural habitat of many wild animals such as polar bears, wolves, caribou, black bears, and arctic foxes. The adjacent Arctic bays are home to seals, ringed seals, and even beluga whales during the summer months. The combination of the three surrounding ecosystems—Hudson Bay, taiga, and tundra—creates a true paradise for cold-loving creatures.

An untouched corner of the world where nature is still allowed to be natural.

What is ethical wildlife viewing?

Ethical wildlife viewing involves observing wild animals in their natural habitat without disturbing or influencing their instinctive behavior.

In practice, you must therefore observe the following principles:

Getting around on foot:

  • The excursions are usually conducted on foot in order to approach the wild animals quietly and unobtrusively. Although this means covering long distances on foot, it is the only way to protect the rich ecosystem with your small footprint.

Keep your distance: Better safe than sorry

  • Cute and fluffy are definitely adjectives that can be used to describe polar bears. However, they are the largest land-based predators on earth and can quickly feel threatened. To ensure the safety of these frosty predators and your own, you must maintain a minimum distance of 100 meters. If a curious polar bear does stray into your vicinity, the guides have various deterrent measures at their disposal to safely de-escalate the situation.

Noise reduction:

  • Psst! Polar bears are very sensitive to noise and are startled even by the simple creaking of wood.
As soon as a polar bear approaches the lodge, you should remain calm and, for example, turn off the sound of the shutter when taking photos. This way, both you and your wild visitors can enjoy the experience undisturbed.

No drones:

  • As tempting as it may sound to film these majestic animals from high above, you should refrain from using them. Flying drones are a visual and acoustic stimulus for polar animals and expose them to avoidable stress.

No perfume:

  • Polar bears have highly sensitive noses and can detect smells from miles away. To avoid irritating the bears, you should therefore refrain from wearing perfume.

Do not feed wild animals:

  • Feeding wild animals can trigger a dependency on humans and, in extreme cases, can even be fatal.

Please read!

You travel to the untouched Arctic regions of Canada to observe the majestic wildlife. Our mission is to offer you safaris that have minimal impact on the environment and wildlife. The safety of travelers and the integrity of the animals are our top priorities.

To ensure this, our customers travel in small groups and are accompanied by experienced nature guides. The daily program is flexible and depends on the current movements of the wild animals, the tides, and the weather.

inventia and our local partner accept no liability for unforeseen events ("force majeure") that affect the sighting of wild animals in their natural environment. Although our travel itineraries and content are the result of many years of experience, we cannot guarantee the extent or diversity of animal sightings.

Weather conditions, population density, behavior patterns, and migrations of other wildlife are some factors that can influence the behavior and activity of animals. Therefore, there is a possibility that the desired wildlife may not be sighted. While this is unlikely, it is not impossible.

Due to the remote location of your destination in the Arctic, flight irregularities are possible due to rapidly changing weather conditions. It is important to remain flexible on this type of expedition trip. We will always arrange alternatives for you.

Be aware that traveling to remote regions of Canada can involve risky activities such as polar bear encounters, which pose risks to your health. These experiences are vastly different from visits to the zoo or Disney World. Please follow the instructions of our local partners and guides at all times. Any deviation from these instructions is at your own risk.

Similarly, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon. We cannot guarantee that they will appear.
