itinerary

Day 1 Flight to Australia
Your grand Australia train adventure begins with a flight from Germany via Singapore to Sydney.
Day 2 Welcome to Down Under!
Arrival in Singapore early in the morning and connecting flight to Sydney. On request, we will be happy to book a stopover with hotel accommodation in Singapore for you. Otherwise, you will fly on to Sydney after a short stay. Here you will be warmly welcomed at the airport and driven to your deluxe hotel, where you will stay for three nights.
Day 3 Cosmopolitan Sydney
Well rested and refreshed, let yourself be enchanted by Sydney's charm on your city tour. Marvel at the world-famous white opera house from the inside and outside before plunging into the colorful hustle and bustle of the old town streets in the shadow of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in The Rocks district. On a harbor tour, you will experience Australia's metropolis from surprising perspectives. What other major city can boast 94 beaches within its city limits? Drive through the exclusive villa suburbs of Double Bay and Rose Bay to the most famous beach of them all: the curved, crescent-shaped Bondi Beach with its white sand is one of the most famous surfing spots in the world. Round off this fantastic day with an atmospheric dinner cruise. (FA)
Day 4 In the Blue Mountains
Today's excursion takes you to the Blue Mountains southwest of Sydney. Did you know? The Blue Mountains are more than 250 million years old! Sandstone formations ranging from ochre to pink, with views even more spectacular than the last! With a little imagination, you can see three sisters turned to stone in the bizarre rock trio known as the Three Sisters, who were imprisoned by their father to protect them from a water spirit. At least, that's what an Aboriginal legend says. Then another extraordinary experience awaits you: your ride on the incredibly steep Katoomba Scenic Railway in Jamison Valley. The 310-meter-long narrow-gauge funicular railway is the steepest inclined elevator in the world, with a gradient of up to 64 degrees. The funicular railway was constructed in the 1880s to transport coal and oil shale uphill from the valley floor, and was then converted for visitors in the 1940s. (F)
Day 5 In vino veritas
A short flight takes you from Sydney to Adelaide. South Australia's capital surprises visitors with its relaxed atmosphere, green parks, and fascinating architecture. At the South Australian Museum, you will not only learn about the magnificent nature of the Fifth Continent, but also encounter the heritage of the indigenous Aborigines for the first time. Pinot noir and Sauvignon blanc – Australia's wines are world class! You can see for yourself during a small wine tasting at the National Wine Center of Australia. You will stay in a comfortable hotel in Adelaide. (F)
Day 6 Australia's legendary train, The Ghan
Today, Australia's legendary train, The Ghan, awaits you at Adelaide Station. Countless stories surround the name of this world-famous train. One says that the name The Ghan is a reminder of the Afghan leaders of the camel caravans who ensured the transport of goods in the Australian outback before the advent of motorization. In 2004, after 120 years of construction, it was finally completed: one of the longest railway lines on earth (2,979 km) now runs through the dreamtime land of the Aboriginal people. Since then, The Ghan has connected Australia from the south coast to the north coast, crossing 22 degrees of latitude and four climate zones. You board the train and travel right across Australia – from the Mediterranean wine country through the Red Centre to the tropical north. Make yourself comfortable in your compartment and watch the rolling landscape of South Australia from your window. Soon, some of the oldest rock formations in the world, the Flinders Ranges, will come into view. As darkness envelops the rugged outback, enjoy an exquisite dinner and fine wines. You will spend the night on board. (FMA)
Day 7 Desert town of Alice Springs
At sunrise, the red desert comes to life outside your compartment window. Soon you will pass Marla, an outback outpost with just 100 inhabitants. At noon, your train reaches Alice Springs, the only major town in the Red Centre, founded in 1872 during the construction of the Trans-Australian Telegraph Line. Here you will say goodbye to your train for three days and immerse yourself in the pioneering days of the white outback settlers at the telegraph station. Afterwards, you will learn at the School of the Air that online education has a long tradition for farm children. You will spend the night in Alice Springs today. (FM)
Day 8 Uluru – Australia's sacred mountain
Today, you will travel through the endless semi-desert to Kata Tjuta National Park. The round rock formations of the Olgas lie in the desert sand like giant red marbles. You will explore the bizarre scenery on a short hike. Your destination for the day is Australia's most famous photo motif: the unmistakable Ayers Rock. The 3.6 km long, 2.4 km wide, and 348 m high monolith Uluru is a sacred place for the Aborigines. In the evening light, the mountain range glows in ever-changing shades of red. You will spend the night at Ayers Rock. (F)
Day 9 Fifty Shades of Red
Today you have to get up early: sunrise at Uluru is a unique experience, a spectacle of light and shadow in the cool morning outback. Afterwards, on a tour around the sacred mountain, you will discover caves and rocks that tell of the myths and dream paths of the Aborigines. Then it's back through the red desert to Alice Springs, where you will spend the night again. (F)
Day 10 In the red canyons
The area around Alice Springs offers a wide variety of landscapes. One excursion takes you to the mountains of the MacDonnell Ranges. Here, several gorges are strung together like pearls on a necklace. Each gorge is different. Some are narrow, others wider, some have waterfalls, others do not. A waterhole (billabong) in the striking Simpsons Gap gorge has water all year round. Keep an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies! Another spectacular gorge is Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye), a place of great spiritual significance for the Aboriginal people. In the evening, you will board The Ghan again at Alice Springs station. You will spend the night on the train. (FA)
Day 11 Welcome to the tropics!
What a change overnight – from the desert in the Red Centre to the tropical north of Australia. The small town of Katherine has been settled by European immigrants since the end of the 19th century and is characterized by fruit and vegetable growing and cattle breeding. From the train station, you set off into the untouched wilderness of Nitmiluk National Park. On a boat trip through the breathtaking gorges of the Katherine River, you can admire ancient rock paintings. Then it's on to the last leg of the journey, a 300 km train ride from Katherine to Darwin. You will reach the idyllic oceanfront capital of the Northern Territory in the evening. You will spend the night in a comfortable hotel. (FM)
Day 12 In Kakadu National Park
Today, you will travel to Kakadu National Park, covering an area of 20,000 km², one of Australia's most fascinating places and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is home to one of the world's most beautiful and extensive collections of rock paintings. Sandstone plateaus, red cliffs, rushing waterfalls and rivers, floodplains and coastline are home to giant crocodiles, flying foxes, dingoes, kangaroos, wallabies and numerous other animals. On your drive through the national park, admire the fantastic Aboriginal rock paintings at Ubirr Rock and Nourlangie Rock, which are over 20,000 years old – a reminder of how long the indigenous people have lived in this region. Keep an eye out for dangerous saltwater crocodiles, kookaburras, magpie geese, jabirus, and sea eagles on your boat trip on the Yellow Water River. (B)
Day 13 On the Pacific!
A short domestic flight takes you from Darwin to Cairns on Australia's Pacific coast. Cairns was founded in 1876 as an export port for gold and other mineral resources. On an afternoon city tour, you will explore the city between Marlin Marina and the saltwater lagoon. In the evening, stroll through the lively night markets in the city center. You will spend the next three nights in a comfortable hotel in Cairns. (B)
Day 14: Through the jungle by train
Today, a special experience awaits you: from the historic Freshwater Station, take the nostalgic Kuranda Scenic Railway on an adventurous 37 km mountain journey over bridges and past waterfalls to Kuranda. Watch tropical greenery and tunnels fly by through the open window as your train climbs a total of 328 m. In the former hippie village of Kuranda, you will enjoy the unique flair of the bird park, markets, and trendy boutiques. In a gondola of the Skyrail Cableway, you will float above the canopy of the rainforest and return to Cairns. (F)
Day 15 At the Great Barrier Reef
Enjoy a day off in the port city of Cairns. Or take a catamaran trip to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef in the world (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Whether with a snorkel and fins or with dry feet in a semi-submarine with a glass bottom, an encounter with the colorful underwater world is an unforgettable experience. (F)
Day 16 Bye-bye, Australia!
In the morning, you will have some free time for last-minute shopping before heading to the airport. Return flight from Cairns via Singapore to Germany. (B)
Day 17 Arrival in Germany
