During your full-day train ride, you’ll experience the country and its people in a unique way. In the early evening, you’ll hike along the edge of the Urique Gorge near Posada Barrancas: The viewpoints at the confluence of the Copper and Urique Canyons are spectacular and breathtaking! (FA)
Day 4: In the Heart of the Copper Canyons
Today you’ll take a fascinating cable car ride and enjoy incredible views of the surrounding canyon system. Don’t forget your camera! A visit with the Rarámuri indigenous people and a stroll through the small town of Creel round out the day before you continue on to Chihuahua aboard the Chepe Regional. (FM)
Day 5: Off to Yucatán!
Today you'll fly to Cancún. A shuttle will take you to the train station, and you'll ride the Tren Maya through the varied landscape to Chichén Itzá. (FA)
Day 6: Majestic Maya City
Today you’ll visit Chichén Itzá, the world-famous Mayan archaeological site. The step pyramid El Castillo is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World! The nearby Yokdzonot cenote invites you to take a refreshing dip—with its crystal-clear, deep-blue waters and jungle-like surroundings that seem straight out of a fairy tale. After a delicious traditional meal, you’ll continue by train for three and a half hours to Uxmal. (FMA)
Day 7: Uxmal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Pyramid of the Magician
Today, you’ll delve into the history of the Late Classic Maya period. The complex impresses with its ornate facades, vast terraces and plazas, columns and archways, as well as the Pyramid of the Sorcerer, which towers over everything. Afterward, you’ll stroll through the colonial streets of the old fortified city of Campeche and enjoy culinary delights at a restaurant overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll then continue your journey to Palenque on the Tren Maya. (FMA)
Day 8: UNESCO World Heritage Site: Palenque
On the edge of the subtropical rainforest of Chiapas, you’ll reach Mexico’s most beautiful ruins—Palenque. Founded around 300 B.C., Palenque was at the height of its glory in the 7th and 8th centuries A.D. Admire the 620 hieroglyphs that tell the story of King Pakal. South of Palenque lie the roaring Roberto Barrios Waterfalls. Stretching for several hundred meters, enchanting cascades are hidden here amid the subtropical jungle of Chiapas. Enjoy a tequila tasting with fresh fruit before heading back to Palenque! In the evening, the authentic flavors of Mayan cuisine await you in Palenque. (FA)
Day 9: Mysterious Calakmul
On today’s day trip, you’ll travel by the Tren Maya from Chiapas to Calakmul. This Maya city was one of the most powerful political centers of the Classic Maya civilization and rivaled Tikal in Guatemala for regional dominance. At over 50 m high, the tallest pyramid is one of the largest in the Maya world. (FA)
Day 10: The Lagoon of Seven Colors
After your 5-hour train ride on the Tren Maya, you’ll arrive in the enchantingly beautiful town of Bacalar. In this small town, home to the lagoon of the same name, you’ll take a boat ride and enjoy the breathtaking play of colors and the impressive natural scenery in all its diversity. (FMA)
Day 11: Off to the coast!
At the small Museo de la Cultura in Chetumal, you’ll discover fascinating insights into Maya culture: In addition to engaging explanations of the Maya script and their highly sophisticated calendar, you’ll find a wide variety of exhibits—ranging from tools and jewelry to everyday objects and traditional foods. You’ll then take a bus toward the Caribbean to Tulum. The Tulum site was built by the Maya right on the coast to control trade routes. It is the most photographed Maya site in the world. After the tour, the Tren Maya will take you to Cancún. (FA)
Day 12: Mexico City
Flight to Mexico City. Welcome to one of the world’s largest cities! A walking tour of the city center takes you past the Presidential Palace to the oldest cathedral on the American continent. The picturesque La Ciudadela market is a paradise for fans of Mexican handicrafts, and at Mercado 77, you’ll find exclusive and extraordinary delicacies as well as a rich selection of fruits and vegetables. To round off this eventful day, enjoy dinner featuring classic Mexican cuisine in the historic center. (FA)
Day 13: Puebla
Trip to Puebla. The architecture of this Mexican colonial city is characterized by its colorful Talavera tiles. The Plaza de la Constitución is one of the most beautiful squares in all of Mexico. You’ll visit the National Railway Museum and the first public library on the American continent. Afterward, you’ll travel to Cuautla. Here, railway enthusiasts will be in their element at the Museo Vivencial Ferrocarril 279. Return to Mexico City and dinner. (FMA)
Day 14: Teotihuacán
Today you will visit the MUMA Military Aviation Museum, which houses about 50 historic aircraft, including the Douglas DC-3 “El Mexicano,” Mexico’s first presidential aircraft. Short drive to Teotihuacán. One of the most impressive ancient cities of the Mesoamerican peoples was built on the central plateau of Mexico. The centerpiece is the 65-meter-high Pyramid of the Sun, the third-largest in the world. Visiting it is an absolute highlight of your trip to Mexico. At your farewell dinner, you’ll enjoy Mexican cuisine one last time. (FLA)
