[Antarctica Wiki] Travel region: The South Pole
Welcome, dear polar pioneers,
Today you will receive the final report on the travel regions in Antarctica. This time we will reach the southernmost point on Earth.
The South Pole
A trip to the geographic South Pole is the supreme discipline among all Antarctic voyages. The South Pole forms thecenter of Antarctica. It is located on the Antarctic continent at 90° south and has a magical attraction for explorers and adventurers.
Due to its location on or below the Antarctic mainland, it cannot be reached by ship. Trips to the South Pole are therefore flying expeditions, combined with a tent camp on the Antarctic continent.
For example, a South Pole flight expedition takes you from Punta Arenas in southern Chile by plane to the base camp on the Antarctic continent. This is where you will stay and spend the night for the next few days. On one of the days, weather conditions permitting, you will then take a flight to the geographic South Pole, which takes four to five hours each way from the base camp.
And then you set foot on thegeographic South Pole, which is located at this point approximately 3,000 meters below the thick, eternal ice. The air at the South Pole is thin; you are here at an altitude of approximately 3,300 to 4,000 meters above sea level, and the temperature fluctuates between -35° and -25° C.
Flight expeditions to the South Pole arealsoofferedfrom South Africa and New Zealand.
For extreme athletes, we offerski expeditions lasting up to 55 days—as well as shorter trips.
