[Antarctica Wiki] Your trip to Antarctica: Cruise or expedition?
Hello, adventurous polar pioneers,
The most important decision for your trip to Antarctica is choosing the right ship.
Imagine looking forward to zodiac landings, penguin colonies, and nature experiences with a sense of discovery. But then you find yourself on a ship with 500 other passengers, six-course gourmet menus in the evening, musical performances after dinner, and you're not allowed to leave the ship for ten days. You share the nature experiences with 500 other passengers from the railing.
But was it cheap? Yes, and slowly you're beginning to understand why.
Or perhaps you want pure luxury with formal evening wear and exciting discovery trips, but suddenly find yourself on a former research vessel. The staff are on first-name terms with you and dinner consists of rustic home cooking from the buffet.
It's not just the type of dinner, the range of Zodiac landings, the onboard entertainment program, and the onboard services that differ. Many details make the difference.
Nothing—absolutely nothing!—is more important than choosing the right ship to travel to Antarctica.
Roughly speaking, an expedition and a cruise differ from each other as follows:
expedition
In addition to the somewhat rustic expedition ship itself, the focus is on active and intense nature experiences. You spend as much time as possible on land. Entertainment consists of entertaining lectures by the scientific lecturers on board and a focus on experiencing nature.
- Former research vessels with high ice class
- Small ships with no more than 50–60 cabins
- Focus on scientific travel
- Functional equipment
- Casual buffet-style meals, free choice of seating, no dress code
- Detailed scientific lectures by lecturers on board.
- Presentations and recaps (summaries) several times a day
cruise
The best of both worlds: the luxurious comfort of a cruise combined with the exhilarating natural experiences of an expedition.
- Ships with comfortable to luxurious amenities and ice class
- Small to medium-sized ships
- Focus on seeing and experiencing the region in combination with a high-class cruise experience
- Luxurious amenities: entertainment, fitness center, bathrobes, cabin service, boutiques, varied entertainment program on board, butler and/or concierge service
- Culinary specialties with meals
- Partial dress code up to elegant attire
- Lectures by lecturers
There are also gradations within the two types of travel— expedition and cruise. Cruises range from 5-star luxury yachts with star chefs to simple cruisers.
The expedition ships also have different equipment.
Expert tip:
For an immersive Antarctic experience, select a small ship withno more than approximately 120 passengers. More passengers on board means less time ashore. With 200 passengers on board, the time spent ashore is halved, as only 100 passengers are allowed ashore at any one time in Antarctica. From 300 people onwards, no landings or excursions are allowed. Ships with more than 500 people are not allowed to enter Antarctica at all."
