Where does my trip to Antarctica start, and how do I get there?

Greetings, polar pioneers,

Even the journey to the southern end of the world is a small journey in itself and should be planned and organized accordingly.

Most Antarctic expeditions and cruises start in Ushuaia. The city is located on the Argentine partof Tierra del Fuego andis the southernmost place in the world.

The best way to travel to Ushuaia is from Frankfurt/Main via Buenos Aires(e.g., nonstop with Lufthansa). Due to the limited flight options to Ushuaia,at least one overnight stay in Buenos Aires may be necessary (recommended!).

Stopover in Buenos Aires

Spend the day in Buenos Aires exploring the Argentine capital (my clients will of course receive detailed suggestions for this).

Even better, spend two or three days there and also visit one of Argentina's magnificent wineries, a typical gaucho farm, or the romantic Río de la Plata delta.

Onward journey to Ushuaia

I recommend traveling from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia at least one day before your ship departs and spending another night here.

On the one hand, this gives you a little time buffer in case of flight irregularities, such as bad weather or strikes. On the other hand, you can color in another blank spot on your personal map.

Ushuaia is thesouthernmost city in the world (according to the Argentinians), and is therefore a city of superlatives: here you can find the southernmost pizza, the southernmost steak in the world, the southernmost post office (send postcards with colorful stamps home from here! Feel free to prepare them in advance when you arrive), etc.

Brief orientation: At every corner, you will find distance markers reminding you of Ushuaia's exposed location:

Buenos Aires – 2,344 kilometers, Berlin – 14,105 kilometers, North Pole – 16,007 kilometers.

Be sure to take a trip toTierra del Fuego National Park. Thisis alsowherethe famousPan-American Highway ends, the network of roads that connects Alaska with Tierra del Fuego after almost 11,000 miles.

Of course, we will organize this from Germany as well.

Expert tip:

Important: You should definitely plan a stopover in Buenos Aires and Ushuaia. This will give you some leeway in case of any irregularities with your flight. This is very important for your trip. If you arrive late in Ushuaia, the ship will not wait for you. And there is no alternative way to catch up with it. Your trip would then be over without the expedition/cruise.

Therefore, we recommend the following: Book your flights and overnight stays with your travel provider. They are familiar with the uncertainties of arrival and departure and can quickly make any necessary rebookings.
