sustainability

  • Antarctica

Like all our partners, the operator of this ship is a member of IAATO, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators.

For decades, the IAATO has been committed to ensuring that travel to Antarctica is conducted responsibly. Members are required to adhere to strict guidelines to ensure that every expedition respects and preserves the fragile ecosystem of the polar regions. From maintaining a safe distance from penguins to strict biosecurity measures, every detail of your trip is designed to protect this special place for future generations.

What does this mean for you? It means that your adventure is linked to the highest standards of sustainability, wildlife protection, and preservation of the breathtaking beauty of Antarctica.

  • Other commitments:

Our expedition provider goes far beyond the strict requirements of IAATO and is passionately committed to additional sustainability initiatives. These include, for example:

  • Voluntary CO₂ compensation through climate protection projects: The expedition provider reduces CO₂ emissions through energy efficiency and compensation measures. This means that all remaining emissions that cannot be removed are offset by supporting certified carbon sequestration compensation projects. Through these measures, the company has achieved net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the CarbonNeutral® protocol. This protocol guarantees that all steps taken to reduce and offset emissions are transparent and verifiable.

  • The Magellan Explorer ship relies on modern, environmentally friendly technologiesthat not only increase efficiency but also promote sustainable use of resources:
    • Sustainable fuels for the future: In collaboration with HIF Global, the expedition operator is testing the use of e-gasoline, produced locally at the Haru Oni plant in Punta Arenas, Chile, to power the Magellan Explorer's Zodiacs. E-fuels are chemically identical to fossil fuels, require no technical modifications, and help reduce CO₂ emissions because they are produced using renewable energy. In the coming years, the company plans to introduce e-fuels such as synthetic marine gas oil (e-MGO) and synthetic jet fuel for shipping and aviation operations to further support its sustainability goals. This partnership marks the first step toward the exclusive use of e-fuels.
    • Heat recovery system: The Magellan Explorer uses a heat recovery system to utilize excess heat from the engines. Here's how it works: When the engines are running, they generate heat that would normally be lost. Instead of simply letting it escape, heat exchangers are used to capture the heat. This heat is then used to power the ship's heating system, heat the water on board, and help produce fresh water for passengers and crew. This allows the ship to consume less energy.
    • Tier III engines: Tier III refers to a particularly strict emissions standard set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which stipulates how much harmful exhaust gas an engine is allowed to produce. Tier III engines that meet this standard drastically reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). These NOx gases pollute the air and exacerbate the greenhouse effect. This technology improves air quality and minimizes environmental impact.
    • Ascenz MARORKA system: For the 2022-2023 polar season, the Marorka system, an advanced "smart shipping" solution, was deployed on board. The system monitors energy and fuel consumption using a variety of sensors and automatic data systems. The system can be considered the "brain" of the ship, collecting data in real time, optimizing operations, and making adjustments to make energy and fuel consumption more efficient.
  • Plastic avoidance: Plastic is kept to an absolute minimum on board. Instead, environmentally friendly alternatives such as reusable bottles are used.

  • Citizen science programs: During the voyage, passengers can actively participate in citizen science projects such as the FjordPhyto project, Happywhale, PolarTag, and the Seabird Surveys, thereby making a direct contribution to Antarctic research.  They collect real data by taking photos, documenting sightings, and conducting surveys. Under the guidance of expert guides and academics, guests not only gain a deeper insight into Antarctic life and the environment, but also contribute to learning more about this unique ecosystem and its global significance.

  • The company's foundation supports projects in science, art, conservation, and education, working closely with universities and partner institutions. Driven by the inspiration of human discovery, it promotes initiatives that foster a deeper understanding of Antarctica and its fragile ecosystems.
    • The ILAN card game teaches people around the world about the Antarctic ecosystem in a fun way and shows how each of us can contribute to the preservation of this unique habitat. Since 2022, the ILAN tournament has been held annually in Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams, where children of different age groups compete against each other. The winners receive an invitation from Antarctica21 to visit Antarctica together with an adult companion. In 2024, the ILAN Club will also be launched, giving schools and families in the Magallanes region the opportunity to meet regularly and further deepen their knowledge.
    • Antarctica Expo 66° South – "The Last Frontier": An interactive exhibition that brings the history and significance of Antarctica to life. In five exciting modules, visitors learn more about the exploration of the South, the connection to the Magallanes region, and the protection of Antarctica. The exhibition encourages curiosity and inspires responsible action. In 2023, over 6,000 people visited the exhibition, which is now on display at the Punta Arenas Maritime Museum.
    • The Antarctic photo book series transports readers into the fascinating world of Antarctica with breathtaking photographs. The first book in the series, "Notes for a Logbook," has already been published and invites readers to discover the unique impressions of the South Pole region. The second volume, "Deception Island – The Last Refuge," is currently in preparation and will continue the journey through this impressive landscape. The proceeds from the sale of the book go directly to the projects of the Antarctica21 Foundation, thus contributing to the continuation of important initiatives.

  • Education and awareness: The A21 Connect app (Apple Store or Google Play) serves as a digital companion, offering interactive learning content on the ecosystems, geography, and history of Antarctica. It provides access to real-time updates on schedules, weather, and the ship's position. Live lectures and a selection of films support learning on board and spark travelers' curiosity about the fascinating Antarctic ecosystem.

  • Supporting local communities: The company prefers to work with local suppliers in order to promote regional products, services, and jobs.
