Day 1 Flight to Gothenburg
Transfer to your hotel and guided city walk before the welcome dinner. (D)
Day 2 Gustav II Adolf's City
Explore Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest but most cosmopolitan city, on a city tour. Enjoy some free time before taking the ferry to Älvsborg Fortress. After an entertaining guided tour of the complex, reminiscent of a theater production, enjoy dinner at a first-class fish restaurant. (FA)
Day 3 In the island kingdom of Sweden's west coast
Rounded skerry cliffs, seagulls crying, salty sea air, and small coastal towns with copper-red, white, and yellow wooden villas—the west coast of Sweden is an idyll that you can experience today on the islands of Marstrand and Tjörn north of Gothenburg. For lunch, you can try freshly caught crabs. (FM)
Day 4 From Kattegat to Trollhättan Waterfall
Your ship, the MS Diana, will be ready for departure in the morning at Packhuskai, between warehouses and historic cargo ships. The first stage takes you inland on the Göta River to Lake Vänern. The 33-meter-high waterfall at Trollhättan plays an important role in Swedish industrial history: in addition to the energy company Vattenfall, Saab and Volvo also settled here. The history of the Trollhätte Canal comes to life during a visit to the Canal Museum. (FMA)
Day 5 On Lake Vänern
At sunrise, the MS Diana sets course for open water: on an island in Lake Vänern, which is around ten times the size of Lake Constance, lies the magnificent Baroque castle of Läckö, which you will visit. Your journey on the Göta Canal really begins when you enter the first of 66 locks. It took around 23 years to connect five lakes and thus create a waterway between the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. If you wish, you can walk alongside the ship from lock to lock. (FMA)
Day 6 Across Lake Vättern to the monastery of Saint Birgitta
After crossing Lake Viken, a full 91 meters above sea level, your captain will steer through narrow canal passages that leave barely a hand's breadth of space on either side. Shortly before entering Lake Vättern, the ship passes the mighty Karlsborg. In the afternoon, an excursion to the small town of Vadstena awaits you. In addition to the castle, which King Gustav Vasa had built in the 16th century, you will also visit the monastery church, whose construction dates back to the visions of Saint Birgitta. (FMA)
Day 7 Across aqueducts and lock stairways
"The body was recovered shortly after 3 p.m. on July 8." This is how a well-known crime novel by authors Sjöwall/Wahlöö from 1965 begins. The events in the novel take place at the lock staircase on Lake Boren, which you pass in the morning. Your ship crosses an aqueduct over a country road and is then lowered a full 40 meters. (FMA)
Day 8 In the archipelago of the Baltic Sea
After a stroll through the small town of Söderköping, you will set sail on the MS Diana toward the Baltic Sea, passing numerous archipelago islands with their typical reddish-brown wooden houses. After visiting the ruins of Stegeborg Castle, your ship will moor for the night. (FMA)
Day 9 Viking town of Birka and royal Stockholm
After crossing Lake Mälaren, you will visit the Viking site of Birka (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Over 1,200 years ago, it experienced its heyday as Scandinavia's most important trading center, for example for amber, furs, antlers, and iron. Stockholm announces itself with a view of Drottningholm, the residence of the Swedish royal family. At the quay in the center of Stockholm, it's time to say goodbye to the crew. Before dinner, take a stroll through the narrow streets of the old town, Gamla Stan. (FMA)
Day 10 Stockholm – the beauty on the water
During a city tour, you will see the Royal Palace and visit the Vasa Museum. It exhibits only one single exhibit, but it is all the more impressive for that: the Vasa, Gustav II Adolf's magnificent warship, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1629. In the afternoon, optional excursion to Drottningholm Palace with its baroque palace theater. (F)
Day 11 The castle had such thick walls – In the footsteps of Tucholsky
Kurt Tucholsky spent his holidays in the idyllic town of Mariefred in 1929 and immortalized Gripsholm Castle in his love story of the same name. After visiting the castle, you will also visit Millesgården, a sculpture garden on the island of Lidingö with magnificent views. Farewell dinner at a specialty restaurant. (FMA)

Transfer to Stockholm Arlanda Airport and return flight to Germany. (B)
