Fly&Cruise Antarctica and South Georgia

from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia

18 days (17 nights)

MS Magellan Explorer
18 days (17 nights) expedition cruise including charter flight to King George Island with South Shetland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula, and South Georgia.
Are you ready to explore the western Antarctic Peninsula, Elephant Island, and South Georgia? Treat yourself to a shortcut and fly directly to Antarctica! On your included charter flight from Punta Arenas in Chile , you will fly over both the legendary Cape Horn and the infamous Drake Passage, allowing you to experience this unique landscape from a bird's eye view. You will then land directly at one of the most spectacular places on earth – Antarctica. The coldest, windiest, and most remote continent.
Tip: Keep your camera handy at all times. There will be endless photo opportunities on the numerous Zodiac trips. Special bonus: The midnight sun, with its almost constant sunlight, allows you to experience all this even longer and more intensely.
As you sail towards South Georgia, you can observe penguin colonies, albatrosses, petrels, and various species of whales from the glass-enclosed Panorama Lounge or from the terrace on the outer deck. South Georgia has a varied landscape with majestic mountains, huge glaciers, deep fjords, and grassy plateaus. In Grytviken, you will visit the historic site with a museum and the grave of Ernest Shackleton.
Also visit St. Andrew's Bay with its 150,000 king penguins and Cooper Island with its large colony of macaroni penguins. Weather permitting, you will also land at Fortuna Bay, Salisbury Plains, Prion Island, and Elsehul Bay.
As a special highlight, I recommend that you sign up for the sea kayaking tour or snowshoe hiking when you make your booking (subject to a fee).

itinerary
Fly&Cruise Antarctica and South Georgia
Day 1: Start of the flight cruise in Punta Arenas
The staff will welcome you in Punta Arenas, Chile, before 2 p.m. You will be taken to your hotel, visit the Explorers House, and attend a mandatory briefing that includes important information about your air cruise and explains the essential guidelines for visitors to Antarctica. At the Explorers House, you can enjoy local specialties and get to know your fellow travelers.
Day 2: Charter flight to Antarctica
A two-hour flight takes you from Punta Arenas to King George Island in the South Shetland Islands. Your adventure begins as soon as you leave the plane and breathe in the clear Antarctic air for the first time. A short vehicle transfer takes you to the coast of Fildes Bay, from where a Zodiac boat takes you to your expedition ship.
Days 3-6: Exploring Antarctica
Cruise between the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula as you sail through ice-filled fjords and past spectacular icebergs. You will be accompanied by seabirds, penguins, seals, and whales. Daily Zodiac excursions allow you to explore the landscape with experienced polar guides.
On board the ship, you can attend an exciting program of lectures and enjoy the spectacular views from the lounge while sharing your experiences with other guests.
Every voyage is unique, as flexibility is key to success in Antarctica. The expedition team plans the route of the voyage to make the most of nature's ever-changing possibilities, creating an extraordinary experience every time. Your itinerary includes visits to places such as Gerlache Strait, Penola Strait, and Antarctic Sound.
Day 7: Elephant Island
On our way north, we stop at Elephant Island. This is where the crew of Shackleton's Endurance took refuge while Shackleton and five selected men continued their journey to South Georgia. The stormy conditions in this area rarely allow for landing, but you will see the island from the ship.
Days 8-9: Voyage to South Georgia
As we sail north, our historian and nature guides offer a series of presentations. There is time to chat in the ship's lounge and observe the region's rich bird life.
Days 14-16: Trip to South America
As the ship sets course for South America, the program continues with lectures. Use this time to deepen your knowledge of the region and its history.
Day 17: At sea and Beagle Channel
Approach the South American continent and sail along the Beagle Channel. Enjoy the beauty of Tierra del Fuego and Navarino Island as you approach Ushuaia.
Day 18: Ushuaia, Argentina
Arrival in Ushuaia, where your very special journey comes to an end as you disembark at the pier.
The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.

SEA KAYAKING
Kayaking is one of the most beautiful ways to explore the Antarctic coastline. Under the guidance of an experienced kayak guide, you can explore even less frequented regions. Paddle between icebergs and pack ice and observe animals in their natural environment. Water dripping from your paddle – this is the only sound you will hear here. Kayaking in polar regions allows you to experience the untouched wilderness in a very special way.
In addition, the kayaking program is limited to a maximum of 20 participants to ensure personal attention. Prior kayaking experience and swimming skills are required to participate. The minimum age for participation is 15 years.
Kayaking is subject to weather and ice conditions, which may affect the itinerary.
SNOWSHOE HIKING
Take part in exciting hiking and snowshoeing excursions that offer an intense experience of the Antarctic wilderness. These excursions take place in small groups led by an experienced hiking and snowshoeing guide.
Snowshoeing does not require any special prior knowledge, but you do need to be in good health. Participants must be at least 15 years old. It is an exciting way to explore the polar world!
