Elephant Island in Antarctica: Shackleton, sea elephants, and rugged landscape
Some ships make stop on their way to Antarctica stop at Elephant Island. The island is a highlight of any Antarctic voyage and plays a significant role in the history of polar expeditions.
Map: Where is Elephant Island?
Elephant Island is located in the Southern Ocean, 245 kilometers north of the Antarctic Peninsula and is part of the South Shetland Islands.
The uninhabited island is 558 square kilometers in size, which is roughly equivalent to the area of Lake Constance. It is fand and covered with ice. Its name to to its name resembling shape and the numerous there living there.
In addition to the animals that give the island its name, a wide variety of seabirds also thrive in the island's harsh climate, including gentoo penguins, macaroni penguins, giant petrels, and black-browed albatrosses.
Elephant Island was probably discovered in February 1820 by British navigator Edward Bransfield. It was mapped in January 1821 by the first Russian Antarctic expedition led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. They named the island Mordvinov, in honor of an 18th-century admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy. This name is still in use in Russia today.
Elephant Island, Ernest Shackleton, and the Endurance Expedition
Elephant Island became famous thanks to the great British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton. In August 1914, he set sail for the Weddell Sea with his ship Endurance and a crew of 27. Their goal was to be the first people to cross Antarctica by land.
However, they got stuck in the pack ice on their way there. The Endurance drifted in the ice for ten months until it could no longer resist the forces of nature and sank. After setting up camp on the ice for several months, the entire crew boarded their lifeboats as the ice began to melt and set off for Elephant Island.
Shackleton quickly realized that the chances of being found in this remote location were very slim. So he and five men took one of the lifeboats again and landed on May 10, 1916, in South Georgia.
There, Shackleton and two of the strongest men hiked over mountains and glaciers before reaching a whaling station on the other side of the island. From there, help was immediately sent to the three other men on the opposite side of South Georgia and to the rest of the crew on Elephant Island. Shackleton's entire crew survived.
Places of interest on Elephant Island
Although Elephant Island is uninhabited, there is still plenty to see here.
Point Wild – the most famous place on Elephant Island

The first attraction on Elephant Island is the Endurance Monument at Point Wild, which commemorates Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated but courageous journey. There is a bust of Captain Luis Pardo, the Chilean naval officer who, together with Shackleton, rescued the crew of the Endurance.
The place was named after Frank Wild, the deputy leader of the Endurance expedition, who remained on Elephant Island with 21 crew members.
Another place associated with Shackleton is Cape Valentine, where the Endurance crew originally went ashore.
Hampson Bay: Historic Antarctic Site
Hampson Bay in the southwest of the island is home to the wreck of a large wooden boat, possibly that of the SS Hampson. Because of this wreck, the site is one of 96 historic sites and monuments in Antarctica.
The wildlife on Elephant Island
Elephant Island is a unique place for animal lovers. Here you can observe seals, penguins, and various species of seabirds.
Sea elephants, which appear so endearing at first glance, are unique creatures. Their large, pendulous noses resemble elephant trunks, and they are known for making loud roaring noises, especially during mating season.

But their physical sluggishness and cute appearance are deceptive: when the huge males fight each other for the females, it can end painfully for one or the other rival.
