11 days Antarctic expedition from/to Ushuaia with Drake Passage, Antarctic Peninsula, and Deception Island
Once in a lifetime – that pretty much sums it up when it comes to an expedition cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula. It will truly be the best decision of your life.
Hardly any other region on earth has such unique fjords and bays to offer as the Antarctic Peninsula. No two days are alike on this ship expedition: look forward to research stations, huge glaciers, snow-capped mountains, unique wildlife , and abandoned whaling stations. And then there's the midnight sun, which bathes these bizarre ice landscapes in the most beautiful colors almost around the clock.
On this cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula, with a little luck you will be able to marvel at minke, humpback, and fin whales. Combined with the unique bird life, including albatrosses, cape petrels, swallows, and Antarctic petrels, this trip will undoubtedly be unforgettable.
On various trips with the Zodiac, you can see the surrounding snow-capped mountains up close and have the opportunity to explore the White Continent on a hike. Possible landing sites include Dance Island with its gentoo penguins; Deception Island with its volcano, abandoned whaling station, and hot springs; Neko Harbor with its epic landscape of huge glaciers and endless snowfields; Paradise Bay —the name says it all; or Port Lockroy with its former British research station.

itinerary
Day 1: The end of the world, the beginning of a journey
Your journeybegins where the world ends, in Ushuaia (Argentina) – also known as the southernmost city on the planet. It is located at the southernmost tip of South America. In the afternoon, you will begin your journey in this small town in Tierra del Fuego, which is itself known as the "end of the world," and spend the rest of the evening sailing through the picturesque, mountain-lined Beagle Channel.
Days 2–3: The path of polar explorers
During the next twodays in the Drake Passage, you will gain an insight into life from the perspective ofthe polar explorers who first braved these regions: cool salt breezes, rushing seas, perhaps even a fin whale emerging from the waves.
Once you have passed the Antarctic Convergence, which forms the natural boundary of Antarctica, you will find yourself in the circumpolar upwelling zone. This zone is created when cold water flowing northward collides with warmer sub-Antarctic water masses.
Not only marine life but also bird life is changing as a result. Wandering albatrosses, grey-headed albatrosses, black-browed albatrosses, sooty albatrosses, Cape petrels, southern fulmars, colourful-footed petrels, blue petrels and Antarctic petrels are just some of the birds you can see.
Days 4–7: Arrival in Antarctica
Gray stone peaks covered with snow, towers of broken blue-white ice, and a very diverse flora and fauna. You will first pass the snow-covered Melchior Islands and sail through the Schollaert Channel, located between Brabant Island and Antwerp Island.
Places you can visit here include:
Danco Island – Activities at this location focus on the gentoo penguins that nest on the island and the Weddell and crabeater seals that are often spotted in the surrounding area.
Neko Harbor – An epic landscape of massive glaciers and endless snowfields shaped by the wind. A Zodiac excursion or shore excursion offers the best perspective of the ice-capped mountain peaks.
Paradise Bay – During a Zodiac ride in this expansive, ice-strewn bay, there is a good chance of seeing humpback and minke whales.
Port Lockroy – After passing through the Neumayer Channel, you can visit the former British research station – now a museum and post office – at Port Lockroy on Goudier Island. You can also take part in activities around Jougla Point, where you will encounter gentoo penguins and blue-eyed shags. There are also good opportunities for kayaking and camping here, or, if conditions are favorable, even snowshoeing along the coast.
Day 8: Landscapes of the South Shetland Islands: Deception Island
The volcanic islands of the South Shetlands are windswept and often shrouded in fog, but they also offer subtle charms: there is a diverse flora (mosses, lichens, flowering grasses) and a considerable fauna (gentoo penguins, chinstrap penguins, southern giant petrels).
At Deception Island, the ship descends into the flooded caldera through Neptune's Bellows. Here you will find an abandoned whaling station and thousands of Cape petrels, along with seagulls, brown and South Polar skuas, and Antarctic terns. This fascinating and desolate volcanic landscape is ideal for hiking.
Alternatively, you can enjoy activities near Half Moon Island. Near the Cámara Base, an Argentine research station, chinstrap penguins and Weddell seals often frolic on the beach. Conditions in the Drake Passage determine the exact time of departure.
Days 9–10: Familiar seas, familiar friends
The return journey is anything but lonely. As you cross the Drake Passage, you will once again be greeted by a multitude of seabirds reminiscent of the passage south. But this time, they seem a little more familiar.
Day 11: There and back again
Every adventure, no matter how great, must come to an end. Now it's time to disembark in Ushuaia—but with memories that will accompany you wherever your next adventure takes you.
The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.
activities
CAMPING IN ANTARCTICA (for a fee)
Special field equipment will be provided. Camping is dependent on weather conditions and local site and environmental regulations. The camping group will be taken ashore after dinner and will return to the ship shortly before breakfast. This means that we will spend the night ashore. The camp will be supervised at night by an experienced guide. Please note that camping is always dependent on weather, local conditions, and environmental protection regulations. Stoves, fuel, and food are not allowed ashore, with the exception of emergency rations and survival equipment, drinking water, and medical supplies. All campers will be provided with a personal waterproof duffel bag containing a sleeping mat, a polar synthetic sleeping bag with inner lining, and a breathable bivouac sack. In addition to these personal items, tents and other equipment will also be taken ashore.
KAYAKING IN ANTARCTICA (for a fee)
Kayaking is one of the most beautiful ways to explore remote Arctic and Antarctic coasts. Accompanied by a kayak guide, kayakers have the opportunity to discover less visited regions. Paddle between icebergs and pack ice, observe animals in their natural environment. Water dripping from your paddle—this is the only sound you will hear on site. Kayaking in polar regions allows you to experience the untouched wilderness in a very special way.
Basic kayaking skills are an advantage but not a prerequisite. Physical fitness is essential. Kayaking is subject to weather and prevailing ice conditions.
POLAR DIVING (for a fee)
Diving in polar waters is truly something special. If you are an experienced diver (at least 30 dives), prepare yourself for an extraordinary experience. Before departure, you must present an internationally recognized diving certificate, your diving logbook, and a statement from your doctor certifying that you are physically capable of diving.
LONG HIKES (for a fee)
Long hikes offer adventurous travelers the opportunity to explore the continent on foot—far beyond the usual shore excursions. Led by experienced polar guides, the hikes take place in selected regions of the Antarctic Peninsula, the South Shetland Islands, and the Weddell Sea. Duration, terrain, and routes vary depending on weather and safety conditions. Participants must be physically fit, as the hikes take several hours over steep and uneven terrain. Groups are limited to 24 people, in subgroups of 12 for individual attention. These hikes offer intense nature experiences, breathtaking views, and an authentic expedition feeling in one of the most untouched landscapes on Earth.
PLEASE NOTE
Advance registration is required for all paid activities. It is recommended to book early as places fill up quickly. Please refer to your information materials for a list of equipment provided.
