In Tahiti, you will board the Aranui 5, a supply ship for the inhabitants of the Marquesas Islands and your slow-paced home for the next 12 days. Bula!

Day 1: Departure from Tahiti (Papeete)
In the late afternoon, after a warm welcome from the crew, you will move into your cabin on the Aranui 5. The journey to Fakarava in the Tuamotu Archipelago begins.

The trip from December 13, 2027, to December 26, 2027, lasts 14 days/13 nights. The itinerary changes from day 6 onwards.
Day 2: Fakarava (January-April), Makatea (May-July) or Kauehi (August-December), Tuamotu Archipelago
Fakarava, 488 km northeast of Tahiti, is a huge atoll that is considered a "UNESCO Biosphere Reserve" due to its rich ecosystem with rare plants and animals.
Makatea: Framed by spectacular cliffs, the country's second-highest atoll is an extreme contrast to the classic coral reef formations. It is also the only atoll in the Tuamotus with natural drinking water sources in underground caves. In the first half of the 20th century, Makatea was a thriving island thanks to phosphate mining. After mining ceased, only a few families remained to guard the island. Today, the fewer than 100 inhabitants live off copra, fishing, and trading coconut crabs.
Kauehi, 40 km northeast of Fakarava, was uninhabited until not so long ago. The atoll was gradually settled for copra production, and pearl farming has also developed in recent years. Kauehi, which has only recently been opened to tourism, will surprise you with its authenticity and the surreal colors of its lagoon.

There are many ways to spend a day at sea on the Aranui 5: immerse yourself in Polynesian culture, for example during workshops on weaving, dancing, cooking, pareo wrapping, ukulele, language, and even playing "tatua." Or relax on deck or in one of the bars, listen to a lecture, or browse the boutique.

Day 4: Nuku Hiva (Taiohae/Hatieu/Taipivai)
The island of Nuku Hiva is the administrative center of the Marquesas. The village of Taiohae is idyllically situated on the beach of a spectacular bay, which nestles against the mountains like a huge volcanic amphitheater and is characterized by towering cliffs from which waterfalls cascade down. Administrative and residential buildings, a hospital, a bank, and schools are all located close together here. An enchanting arts and crafts center is located near the beach.

Take a walk up the hill to the cemetery where Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel are buried and enjoy the view of the harbor. Visit the Gauguin Museum, a replica of his "House of Joy," and also pay a visit to the Brel Museum. Here you can take a look at his plane, JoJo, which was often used for medical emergencies.
Atuona, the largest village on Hiva Oa and the second largest in the entire Marquesas, was once the capital of the archipelago. In the afternoon, you will visit the impressive church of Tahuata. The large church, built by the Vatican, is decorated with detailed carvings and a stained glass window depicting the Marquesan cross. Although Tahuata is the smallest inhabited island in the Marquesas, it has an eventful history: a lot has happened here, from the Spanish explorers who discovered the island in 1595 as the first in the archipelago and murdered 200 curious locals, to the first missionaries in 1797, to the first French settlement in the Marquesas, founded in 1842. Most of the local men—and some of the women—carve exceptionally beautiful tiki figures, necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry from horse and cow bones, fossils, and seashells.

The coconut oil Monoi from Fatu Hiva is among the best of its kind. Tapa artworks and carvings also make great souvenirs. Sporty passengers can walk the 16 km route from Omoa to Hanavave with breathtaking views of steep cliffs and majestic waterfalls. In this case, a picnic will be served at the summit. Those who are not hiking can continue with the Aranui to Hanavave in the Bay of Virgins, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. On land, you can stroll through the village and wait for the hikers to arrive.
