The Magdalena River is Colombia's great river, and along its banks intertwine Birdsong and cumbia music. This river cruise begins in Barranquilla, where the river flows into the Caribbean, and continues upstream to the UNESCO city Mompox and ends with two full days in Cartagena. The first evening sets the tone: an exclusive Carnival Celebration full of color, music, and dance that fills the air with rhythm; its tradition is recognized by UNESCO as cultural heritage.

What excites us about this trip: River cruising on the Río Magdalena is still in its infancy; the two boutique ships built specifically for this river have only been sailing here since 2025. Depending on your travel dates, you’ll sail on the AmaMagdalena or the AmaMelodia, which accommodate a maximum of 60 and 64 passengers, respectively, along with 30 crew members; each cabin features a Twin Balcony—a French balcony and a walk-out outdoor balcony—and every morning begins with a fresh view of the river.
At every port, there are guided shore excursions to choose from, with several options available each day: a boat ride through the emerald-green wetlands of Boca de Tacaloa, a visit to the filigree workshops in Mompox, or a bike taxi ride through Calamar. A cruise manager will accompany you throughout the entire trip, and the evenings wind down with live music in the lounge.

Arrival and Departure: The trip begins in Barranquilla and ends at the Cartagena Turistica pier in Cartagena. International flights are not included in the tour price; upon request, we can assist with flight arrangements. Before and after the cruise, you can add land packages in Medellín and Panama City; once a land package is booked, domestic flights within Colombia are included.
Entry Requirements: German citizens must have a valid passport. You can find the latest travel and safety advisories for Colombia from the Federal Foreign Office. Regulations may vary for other nationalities. Please feel free to contact us.
Food and Drink on Board: All meals on board are included; beer and wine are available with lunch and dinner, and the daily “Sip-and-Sail” cocktail hour is a highlight. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available if you request them in advance; kosher meals are not available on board.
Note for solo travelers: If you do not request a single cabin, you may be accommodated in a shared cabin on board. In this case, you will be accommodated with other travelers of the same gender and possibly of a different nationality. No single cabin surcharge will apply.

Day 1 | Barranquilla and the Carnival Evening
In Barranquilla, you’ll board the ship, settle into your cabin, and feel the city’s energy come alive. In the evening, the exclusive Carnival celebration fills the air with color, music, and rhythm; this UNESCO-recognized tradition sets the mood for everything to come.
Day 2 | Village Life in Sabanagrande
Your first full day by the river is all about the peaceful rhythm of the riverbank: near Sabanagrande, you’ll visit Sitio Nuevo with its quiet alleys, watch artisans at work, and catch the aromas of local specialties wafting from the kitchens. The village welcomes you into the heart of its daily life, far from the spotlight.
Day 3 | Boca de Tacaloa and Jazz in Mompox
At Magangué, you’ll board a small boat and glide through the emerald-green wetlands of Boca de Tacaloa, a teeming sanctuary filled with the sounds of birds: herons take flight from the riverside forest.
In the evening, the ship arrives in Mompox, and the alleys come to life with the first notes of the exclusive open-air jazz performance.
Day 4 | Mompox, City of Silversmiths
Mompox is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and anyone walking through the alleys along the river will quickly understand why: the workshops and facades seem to come from a bygone era. A guided tour of the city, including a ride in a tuk-tuk, will take you to the city’s quiet corners, and in a filigree workshop, you can watch as delicate silver threads are transformed into jewelry by skilled hands.
Day 5 | Santa Bárbara de Pinto and Cumbia
The day begins with a peaceful boat ride across the water to Santa Bárbara de Pinto, where life along the river and traditional crafts continue to thrive.
Back on board, it’s Cumbia night: Families from the region come aboard with music, stories, and dancing, and by the first song at the latest, you’ll understand why this dance brings generations together.
Day 6 | Calamar and Palenque
Travel through Calamar on a “Paola”—the local bicycle taxi designed for two people—passing by churches and colorful streets. Next on the itinerary is Palenque, the first “free town” in the Americas: Its enduring traditions range from symbolic hairstyles to time-honored customs, and its music is recognized by UNESCO as a treasure of the region.
Day 7 | Cartagena, A Gem on the Caribbean Coast
Cartagena sparkles along the Caribbean coast: sun-drenched streets, colorful neighborhoods where music, art, and the flavors of the Caribbean can be found around every corner. The tour through the walled Old Town continues on to Castillo San Felipe and the Getsemaní neighborhood, and with every step, history blends into the life of the city.
Day 8 | Disembarkation in Cartagena
It's time to say goodbye at the Cartagena Turistica pier. If you'd like, you can spend a few more days in the old town or extend your trip with a shore excursion package.
The daily itineraries described are provided for your reference. Water levels and weather conditions on the Río Magdalena may affect the route; if necessary, the ship will dock at a different location, shore excursions will be adjusted, or the sister ship will be used. The crew handles such changes with well-coordinated procedures to ensure that your trip continues smoothly.

At every port, there are guided shore excursions to choose from, with several options available daily and included in the tour price; on select departures only, a single excursion may incur an additional charge. Guides who know the area well share the stories behind the places, from filigree craftsmanship to the history of freedom in Palenque.
Full-day excursions take up most of the day and cannot be combined with other morning or afternoon excursions. Your Cruise Manager will tailor the recommendations to your interests.
"Sip and Sail" Hours and Evenings in the Lounge
Every day, the Sip-and-Sail cocktail hour invites you to relax as the shoreline glides by in the evening light. Afterward, the lounge comes alive with live music and cultural performances, ranging from cumbia nights to regional music.
This music makes your foot tap along on its own; anyone who wants to can stay until the very last song.
Colombian Cuisine Onboard
The Main Restaurant features Latin American-inspired dishes alongside Western classics, and the cuisine draws its flavors from the region you're currently traveling through; beer and wine are served with lunch and dinner.
In addition, enjoy an intimate al fresco dinner under the open sky that perfectly captures the flavors of Colombia. It’s best to let us know about any dietary requests before your trip.
Pool on the Luna Deck, fitness and massage on board
The top deck is a place of tranquility: a pool offers relief from the tropical heat, and lounge chairs and rocking chairs offer views of the shore.
If you want to stay active, there's a fitness center on board; afterward, a massage will loosen up your shoulders. The interior areas of the ships are fully air-conditioned, right down to the hallways.

Important:
- We recommend arriving one to two days before the trip begins to allow for any flight or baggage delays.
- Travel health insurance with unlimited coverage is mandatory, and proof of coverage must be provided.
- The trip takes you to remote areas without access to advanced medical facilities. People with life-threatening conditions or who require daily medical care cannot participate.
- Language spoken on board: English. No German-speaking guide is provided.
- There is no elevator on board the AmaMelodia; passengers must use the stairs to move between decks. Shore excursions require a sure footing on piers and cobblestone streets. If you have limited mobility, please contact us before booking.
- We will cancel the trip up to 30 days before departure and notify you by email if the minimum number of 50 participants has not been reached. Such cancellations are extremely rare.
- All cabins can be booked for single occupancy. The single occupancy surcharge is 50 percent of the fare in categories A, B, and C, and 100 percent of the fare in the suites; from time to time, the cruise line offers discounted surcharges to solo travelers.
- We'll advise you on the bed configuration for your cabin when you make your reservation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to this river cruise?
The trip begins in Barranquilla and ends at the Cartagena Turistica pier in Cartagena. International flights are not included in the tour price; we’re happy to assist with flight arrangements upon request. If you book a land package before or after the cruise, domestic flights within Colombia are included.
Do I need a visa for Colombia?
German citizens must have a valid passport. You can find the latest travel and safety advisories from the Federal Foreign Office for Colombia. Binding information on visa and passport requirements is provided by the relevant embassy or consulate; regulations may vary for other nationalities. Please feel free to contact us.
What ship am I on?
Depending on the date, either the AmaMagdalena (with a maximum capacity of 60 passengers) or the AmaMelodia (with a maximum capacity of 64 passengers) will be sailing. Both ships were built specifically for the Río Magdalena; their interiors are inspired by Colombian design, and each cabin features a French balcony and a walk-out balcony. We’ll let you know which ship will be sailing on your travel dates when you book.
What's included in the tour price while on board?
Included are all meals on board, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, the daily “Sip-and-Sail” cocktail hour, free Wi-Fi, guided shore excursions at every port, and assistance from a Cruise Manager. Coffee, tea, and bottled water are available around the clock. Premium beverages, imported wines, and gratuities are not included in the tour price.
How do the shore excursions work?
At each port, you can choose daily from several guided experiences, almost all of which are included in the tour price; only on select sailings may a single experience incur an additional charge. Guides who know the area well will accompany you, and groups remain small. Full-day experiences take up most of the day and cannot be combined with other morning or afternoon excursions.
What happens during high or low water?
The shipping company continuously monitors water levels and has well-established contingency plans in place: If necessary, the ship will dock at a different location, shore excursions will be adjusted, or the sister ship will be deployed. This ensures that the voyage continues smoothly even when water levels are unusual.
What kind of clothing is appropriate on board and ashore?
Comfortable, casual-chic attire is appropriate on board; for the welcome and farewell dinners, a slightly more festive look is acceptable. Given Colombia’s warm climate, breathable fabrics and sun protection are recommended.
Is this trip suitable for solo travelers?
Solo travelers are warmly welcome on this cruise, and every cabin can be booked for single occupancy. The single occupancy surcharge is 50 percent for Categories A, B, and C, and 100 percent for suites; the cruise line occasionally offers discounted surcharges.
