MS Sea Spirit
12 days (11 nights) Antarctic expedition from/to Ushuaia along the Antarctic Peninsula and to the Shetland Islands
+++ Up to 25% off select trips for the 2027/2028 season when booked by September 30, 2026 +++
Get up close and personal with seals, penguins, and whales on this Antarctic expedition. Unique wildlife in a bizarre landscape with drifting icebergs.
Surrounded by the world's largest ice desert, you can take trips to remote bays, observe the wonderful wildlife up close, or kayak alongside huge icebergs.
The route of your journey is just as spectacular: you start in Ushuaia, the southernmost town in the world in Argentina, heading towards Drake Passage.
The Antarctic Peninsula is one of the most remote landscapes in the world. Sheltered bays and narrow channels are surrounded by high snow-capped mountains. Glaciers reach the sea and icebergs of all sizes and shapes float in the water.
Further south, you will pass Gerlach Street with its bays teeming with wildlife and unspoiled landscapes. Names such as Paradise Bay sum it up perfectly, as they reveal glacier-covered mountains, large icebergs, whales hunting for food, seals on ice floes, and bustling penguin colonies.
As a special highlight, I recommend that you sign up for the sea kayaking tour or camping in Antarctica (subject to a fee) when you book. Those interested in photography can also take part in various photo tours with an expert.

itinerary
Day 1: Ushuaia, Argentina
Welcome to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world and the starting point of your expedition cruise. Hotel accommodation is organized and included in the price. The rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure: Ushuaia's city center offers beautiful souvenir shops and a wide selection of restaurants.
Day 2: Embarkation in Ushuaia
In the afternoon, there will be a group transfer to the pier in Ushuaia, where the crew will welcome you aboard the MS Sea Spirit. Explore the ship that will be your home for the next few days and let the adventure begin. Experience the departure from Ushuaia and enjoy the beautiful scenery as you sail through the Beagle Channel, where, with a little luck, you may already spot the first marine mammals.
Day 3–4: Crossing the Drake Passage
After sailing through the Beagle Channel along Tierra del Fuego, the MS Sea Spirit now heads south into the Drake Passage. You can observe seabirds, such as the magnificent albatross, from the outer decks. You will cross the Antarctic Convergence, which marks the transition to colder waters and thus the natural border to Antarctica. The stabilizers of the MS Sea Spirit provide additional stability in rough seas. During the crossing, the expedition team will provide you with information about your journey and an introduction to how to behave on land later on. The first lectures by experienced lecturers will get you in the mood for your arrival in Antarctica.
Days 5–8: South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula
The expedition begins! The route in Antarctica depends heavily on the weather and ice conditions. Your experienced captain and expedition leader will determine the route and landings on a daily basis and plan according to local conditions to provide the best expedition experience. The long days are used to explore the incredible wildlife alongside the landings with the stable Zodiacs.
The Antarctic Peninsula region boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Sheltered bays and narrow channels are surrounded by high, snow-capped mountains. Glaciers reach the sea and icebergs of all sizes and shapes float in the water. The cold water provides an ideal habitat for krill, whales, and many species of seals. Penguins populate large colonies and can also be observed in the sea. Several research stations also offer the opportunity to visit, and you can often send a postcard from here.
The South Shetland Islands are the northernmost archipelago in Antarctica and will probably be the first land you see – following in the footsteps of historic seafarers. This beautiful chain of islands offers countless landing sites with high biodiversity and historical significance. One highlight is Deception Island, an active volcano whose caldera is flooded and home to the remains of an abandoned whaling station.
Further south on the Antarctic Peninsula, you will find Gerlach Strait with its interesting, often wind-sheltered bays rich in wildlife and unforgettable scenery. Names such as Paradise Bay say it all, as they reveal glaciers, large icebergs, whales hunting for food, seals on ice floes, and bustling penguin colonies.
Further south of Gerlachstraße lies the famous Lemaire Channel. This narrow, beautifully situated channel is also known as "Kodak Gap" due to the vast number of photos taken here.
The days in Antarctica are filled with unforgettable activities. Enjoy the excellent food on board, the lectures given by your expedition team, conversations with your fellow travelers, and let yourself be infected by the "polar virus."
On the 12-day trip, you will spend an additional day exploring the Antarctic Peninsula.
Days 9-10: Crossing the Drake Passage
After a fascinating time in Antarctica, you will cross the Drake Passage again. Lectures and workshops by the expedition team and the cozy stay on board will make the days fly by. Enjoy a review of the trip with the photographer's slide show.
Day 11: Disembarkation in Ushuaia, Argentina
You will arrive in Ushuaia early in the morning, and after breakfast it will be time to say goodbye. A shared transfer will take you to the airport or city center, depending on your preference. As you look back on your journey, you may already be planning your next expedition cruise to the ice.
The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.
