Fly&Cruise Antarctic Express: Antarctic Circle

Includes charter flight to King George Island with crossing of the Antarctic Circle

Fly&Cruise Antarctic Express: Antarctic Circle

from/to Punta Arenas

11 days (10 nights)

MS Ocean Explorer | MS World Voyager

11 days (10 nights) Antarctic expedition from/to Punta Arenas, including charter flight to King George Island with the South Shetland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula, and Antarctic Circle.

This express Antarctic voyage not only includes an intensive exploration of the Antarctic Peninsula, but also travels far south beyond the Antarctic Circle. Few travelers reach this milestone. You will feel like the last person on Earth as you travel across endless ice-covered landscapes.

And the best part of this trip: a short, comfortable flight from Punta Arenas in Chile (included) takes you directly to King George Island in Antarctica.  There's no faster way to reach the White Continent. So you can start your Antarctic adventure right away. Completely immersed in the Antarctic environment, you'll experience a roller coaster of emotions, from excitement to exquisite solitude to incredible gratitude for the wonder of it all.

Perhaps you will go whale watching and witness a calving glacier. Or maybe you plan to climb another peak to get a better view and find yourself surrounded by curious penguins. Antarctica will hold many unforgettable moments for you. Very few landscapes in the world are as impressive and dramatic as Antarctica.

On the Zodiac rides, keep an eye out for whales, penguins, and bizarre ice landscapes. Don't forget your camera! Leopard seals and penguins frolic on the beaches and bays, while tall, snow-capped mountain peaks tower in the background.

Crossing the Antarctic Circle is a very special experience, as very few Antarctic cruises venture this far south. If conditions allow you to cross this famous line at 66°33′ S, you and your fellow passengers will celebrate in style with a well-deserved glass of champagne!

As a special highlight, I recommend that you register for sea kayaking, paddling tours , or camping (subject to a fee) when you make your booking.

itinerary

Fly&Cruise Antarctic Express: Antarctic Circle

Day 1: Arrival in Punta Arenas, Chile
Your adventure begins in Punta Arenas, Chile, the most populous city in southern Patagonia. If you arrive early, there are many museums, restaurants, and shops to keep you busy for days. In the early afternoon, enjoy a welcome dinner at the city hotel and receive information about the preparations for your embarkation day.

Day 2: Flight to King George Island and embarkation
Your charter flight from Punta Arenas to Antarctica will take you across the legendary Drake Passage in just a few hours. Far below, the ship will be approaching King George Island in preparation for your arrival. Your first glimpse of Antarctica's dramatic landscapes will be from a unique perspective as your plane descends to land on the South Shetland Islands. After landing, stretch your legs with a 1.6 km walk to the shore before being taken by Zodiac to your ship to set sail for the Antarctic Peninsula!

Days 3–5: Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands
There are few places in the world as evocative as Antarctica. As your ship approaches the White Continent, you may be overcome with feelings of excitement and awe. Much of Antarctica is indescribable and can only be fully appreciated through your own eyes.

As your captain and expedition team scan the skies for whales and seabirds, you will be alerted to each new sighting. The team of experts will also provide detailed explanations about the glaciology, history, and wildlife of the region.

Your shore excursions are even more exciting. You will never forget your first Zodiac landing! A walk on a beach covered with penguins is the most intimate way to experience the unique wildlife of Antarctica.

Every landing is different and depends on the weather, but every day offers new sightings and photo opportunities, and it won't be long before you can tell the difference between an Adélie, gentoo, and chinstrap penguin.

You can take a Zodiac ride in search of whales and icebergs one day, followed by a hike to a penguin breeding station the next. From the booming sound of a calving glacier to the thrill of seeing predators such as leopard seals and killer whales in action, you'll wake up early and greet each day with a sense of adventure and a desire to explore this unparalleled travel experience.

Your expedition team will accompany you along the way, ensuring your safety and providing insights into the places you visit.

Days 6 & 7: Antarctic Circle
Crossing the Antarctic Circleis an impressive achievement, as most expeditions to the Antarctic Peninsula do not reach 66°33′ S. If conditions allow you to cross this famous line at 66°33′ S, you and your shipmates will celebrate in style with a well-deserved glass of champagne!

As you toast the first explorers who ventured into this vast southern region, you can take pride in having made it to a part of the world that very few people ever visit. This is the rugged Antarctic, home to the midnight sun, Weddell seals, and some of the most peculiar yet magical ice formations you will see anywhere on the continent.

Days 8 & 9: North along the peninsula
If you haven't had enough of Antarctic wildlife and icebergs, you'll surely be satisfied when you return to King George Island. On your journey north along the western Antarctic Peninsula, you'll continue to travel by Zodiac or on land.

Your expedition team will always be on the lookout for species of seabirds, seals, and whales that you may have missed on your journey south.

Day 10: Disembarkation and flight to Punta Arenas
After your week of exploration, you will say goodbye to your expedition team and disembark on King George Island. Your two-and-a-half-hour flight across the Drake Passage to Punta Arenas, Chile, will conclude your adventure. After a group transfer to your hotel, you can spend an evening on your own in the city or at the hotel, reminiscing about the sights and sounds of Antarctica.

Day 11: Departure from Punta Arenas
After breakfast, you are free to continue your journey on your own or drive to Punta Arenas Airport for your flights home.

The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.

activities

PADDLE TOUR
If you are interested in kayaking but are less experienced when it comes to sea kayaking, a paddle tour is the perfect option for you. Paddling on stable sit-on-top kayaks is perfect for anyone with little or no kayaking experience. On calm days, rotating groups of passengers are selected, with experienced guides always on hand to give you instructions and help you connect with the Arctic Ocean.

KAYAKING
Imagine gliding across the surface of a bay surrounded by icebergs and glaciers. Kayaking is a great way to explore your surroundings in a spectacular way. A small group of kayakers will go out several times per trip as an alternative to landings or Zodiac rides.

The number of opportunities for kayaking depends on the weather and is only available in calm conditions. Previous kayaking experience is required, and you must be able to exit the kayak into the water in order to participate. Beginners who are interested in kayaking should consider participating in the paddle tour.

Kayaking in Antarctica

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING (only on the MS World Voyager)
The combination of surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and paddling gives you a very personal and unique perspective on Antarctica. Conducted in small groups—in calm bays and harbors, weather permitting—and accompanied by a safety crew, these one-of-a-kind stand-up paddle excursions can be booked in advance in two consecutive priority groups. Following the first two successful excursions, this activity will be offered for all subsequent excursions on a first-come, first-served basis through sign-up on board the ship.

PLEASE NOTE
Advance registration is required for all paid activities. It is recommended to book early as places fill up quickly. Please refer to your information materials for a list of equipment provided for each option.
