This trip combines the pleasure of a leisurely cruise with safari adventures along the mightiest river in Southern Africa, the Zambezi! First, marvel at the famous Victoria Falls before traveling to a still-pristine region along the Zambezi, where few visitors have ventured so far. The southern riverbanks, home to Matusadona National Park, are characterized by an abundance of wildlife. On board your ship, you’ll enjoy all the amenities and relax on the deck while watching wildlife on land and in the water. You’ll also explore smaller coves and islands by dinghy and, with a little luck, get up close to elephants, giraffes, and countless other animals. Another highlight of this trip is a visit to the wildlife-rich Mana Pools National Park, where you’ll stay for three nights at a magnificent lodge and go on exciting safaris along the banks of the Zambezi.

Day 1 Flight to Africa
(If you booked without flights, your trip begins on Day 2)
Day 2 Arrival at the Zambezi
Land in Victoria Falls, where you’ll be greeted at the airport and driven to your lodge. After lunch, relax on the terrace or by the pool and enjoy the magnificent natural scenery with a cool drink. In the early evening, explore the Zambezi River by boat at sunset—with the chance to spot elephants and hippos in their natural habitat. You’ll enjoy your welcome dinner in style during the boat ride. (FMA)
Day 3 At Victoria Falls
In the morning, a guided tour will take you to the magnificent waterfalls and the legendary Victoria Falls Bridge. After lunch at a restaurant perched high above the Zambezi Gorge, you can take a helicopter flight over Victoria Falls (optional excursion, payable on site). (FMA)
Day 4: Trip to Msuna – Welcome aboard the Zambezi Trader!
By bus, you’ll travel inland through sparsely populated areas and reach the Zambezi River again further east. The river is navigable eastward from Msuna, and this is where your floating home for the next four nights awaits you: the Zambezi Trader. The crew will warmly welcome you on board as the ship casts off from the shore and slowly picks up speed. Settle into your cabin and then take a seat on the sun deck. The Zambezi widens near Msuna, offering unobstructed views of small islands, bays, and ranges of hills stretching far into the countryside. You’ll be treated to magnificent scenery in Devil’s Gorge, through which the river winds its way. The banks rise as high cliffs, over which golden eagles and Taita falcons often soar. (FMA)
Day 5: Relaxation on board ...
Enjoy a day aboard the Zambezi Trader, which has passed the mouth of the nearly 300 km-long Lake Kariba and is sailing eastward with the current of the Zambezi River. From the sun deck and the dinghy, you can keep an eye out for hippos and crocodiles. If you’d like, you can try your luck at fishing. Maybe you’ll even hook a tigerfish? (FMA)
Day 6: In the Land of the BaTongas
During a presentation, you’ll learn fascinating facts about the BaTonga people and the daily lives of those who settled around the lake following the construction of the Kariba Dam. You’ll also visit one of the small, remote fishing villages. After dinner on board, you’re sure to be lulled to sleep tonight by the grunts of the hippos ... (FMA)
Day 7: Matusadona National Park
Your ship arrives at Matusadona National Park. You’ll go on an extended game drive in open-top vehicles and, with any luck, encounter large herds of elephants, lions, and other wildlife. The park was one of the last refuges for the black rhinoceros, which was severely endangered by poaching. For several years now, it has been under new management, with the vision of restoring it to a true sanctuary for elephants and rhinos. (FMA)
Day 8 Kariba
In the small town of Kariba, on the eastern shore of the lake and near the border crossing into Zambia, you’ll say goodbye to your ship’s crew. You’ll visit a lookout point overlooking the mighty Kariba Dam, which was built in the 1950s and rises nearly 130 m above the Zambezi River. You can browse for souvenirs at a small arts-and-crafts market before checking into your room at a lodge perched high above the lakeshore. Here, you’ll once again enjoy a magnificent view of Lake Kariba over dinner. (FMA)
Day 9 Via Chirundu to the east
Your journey to Mana Pools National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) begins with an approximately three-hour bus ride to Chirundu. There, you’ll transfer to a motorboat and, after about a 1.5-hour cruise on the Zambezi River, arrive at your stylish accommodations in Mana Pools National Park. Built on the riverbank, the lodge will serve as your ideal base for exciting wildlife viewing over the next few days. You’ll set out on your first game drive even before sunset. (FMA)
Day 10 Mana Pools National Park
On safari days, it’s time to get up early! After an early breakfast, an exciting game drive begins in Mana Pools National Park. Due to its remoteness, the park is still rarely visited, and that is also its greatest luxury. Designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1984, it enchants visitors with its varied landscape—dominated by giant acacia trees—its large wildlife population, and its rare wild dogs. (FMA)
Day 11 On the prowl
A new day offers opportunities to spot wildlife on the sandbars, small lakes (pools), and waterways along the southern bank of the Zambezi River. Between extensive safaris in the morning and afternoon, you’ll enjoy a relaxing siesta on the veranda of your chalet. Your afternoon safari will be capped off with a sundowner in the heart of the park. On the way back to camp, you might even encounter some of the shy, nocturnal animals... (FMA)
Day 12 Pamuzinda Lodge
After breakfast, you’ll say goodbye to the Zambezi today. A transfer will take you to the airstrip, where the pilots of a small charter plane will already be waiting for you. During the approximately 45-minute flight, the mountain ranges of the so-called Escarpment and, later, the vast Mashona country will unfold beneath you. From the small airstrip, it’s just a very short transfer to your cozy lodge. You’ll round off the day with dinner on the restaurant terrace. (FMA)
Day 13 Harare and surroundings
In the morning, you can visit the Chengeta Primary and Secondary School (on school days only), which was built by the operators of your safari lodge. Afterward, you can choose from a variety of activities—would you like to experience the wildlife living on the lodge grounds on a horseback ride, or would you prefer to explore on foot? Or perhaps take a leisurely canoe ride on an idyllic stretch of the Mupfure River, lined with lush greenery? Today, your lunch will be served in the heart of nature under a large fig tree. In the evening, a farewell dinner awaits you, featuring a performance of traditional local dances. (FMA)
Day 14 Goodbye, Africa!
After breakfast, you’ll have the opportunity to go on one last game drive on the grounds of the safari lodge. Afterward, you’ll be transferred to the airport, where you’ll say goodbye to your tour guide. You’ll fly overnight to Germany. (B) (If you booked without flights, your trip ends on Day 14)
