Shipwreck Lodge is located on the famous Skeleton Coast between the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers in Skeleton Coast National Park, just 28 miles from Gull Bay.

The 16,845 km² park area was declared a nature reserve in 1971 and serves to protect almost a third of Namibia's coastline. It is notorious for its treacherous weather, rough surf, and shifting shores—all of which give this area a special charm.

The shipwreck-shaped chalets are nestled among the dunes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, where the cold Benguela Current provides a refreshing breeze.

Here, you can experience the lonely landscapes of the desert, steeped in geological history and home to fauna and flora that have adapted to these harsh conditions.

On the other hand, you have a breathtaking view of the endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. You can spend your days on excursions to Möwe Bay to observe seal colonies or to the Huarusib River to go fishing. Or how about lunch on the beach or a sundowner cruise in the evening?

The Shipwreck Lodge has 8 double chalets and 2 family chalets, which can be converted into triple chalets on request. All chalets have toilets and en-suite bathrooms with indoor showers.

Double/twin room

The eight double rooms at Shipwreck Lodge have their own terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and can be converted into triple rooms on request.

The two family rooms can accommodate up to four people (two adults, two children, or three adults). The terrace offers a beautiful view of the endless Atlantic Ocean.

Day trip to Möwe Bay

Take a day trip to the seal colony at Seagull Bay and discover the remains of the Suiderkus and Karimona shipwrecks, as well as the abandoned Westies Diamond Mine and the wreckage of a Ventura bomber.

With the four-wheel drive vehicle at the Hoarusib River

This is also a day trip that invites you to explore the "clay castles." These are natural geological formations created by the gradual deposition and erosion of clay. You can often spot brown hyenas here, and sometimes even elephants and lions that have adapted to life in the desert.

Lunch on the beach

Why not have lunch on the beach and enjoy the ebb and flow of the ocean?

The coast of Namibia is a paradise for anglers. Guests at Shipwreck Lodge have exclusive fishing rights in the area for their own consumption. At the end of a successful fishing trip, the chef will be happy to prepare your catch for you.

sunset cruises

Drive into the sunset to the Roaring Dunes, one of the few places in the world where you can experience the natural phenomenon of "roaring dunes." When you drive, walk, or slide down one of the steep dunes, it makes a sound like thunder or a low-flying airplane. Although this phenomenon cannot yet be explained precisely, it is believed that friction between the grains of sand or the compression of air between them causes the sound.

Quad biking

Take a quad bike ride out into the desert with one of the guides, for example to the Roaring Dunes. The rides last about an hour.

location

The nearest international airport is Windhoek Hosea Kotako Airport. From here, you can reach your destination in around 8.5 hours by rental car. We recommend the more pleasant journey by small plane from Windhoek to Möwe Bay Airport. We are happy to arrange your travel arrangements.

The hotel is located in northwestern Namibia on the Atlantic coast and has a central meeting point at Möwe Bay Airport, from where guests are taken to their accommodations in closed jeeps (duration approx. 1.5–2 hours).

Please note that guests arriving independently must drive through Skeleton Coast National Park on unpaved gravel roads towards Möwe Bay. Wind and weather can greatly affect road conditions here, so a higher-clearance vehicle with four-wheel drive is recommended. You will leave your car at the meeting point in Möwe Bay and be driven the rest of the way.

Pick-up times at Möwe Bay Airport: 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Departure times from Shipwreck Lodge: 9 a.m.
