2 dates for the summer solstice
The midnight sun is a phenomenon that occurs during the Arctic summer when the sun is visible for a full 24 hours in good weather. The summer solstice in Longyearbyen falls on June 21. The term "solstice" (Latin: solstitium) means "sun standstill" and describes the point on the horizon where the sun appears to rise and set, after which it stops and reverses direction. At the solstice, the sun does not rise exactly in the east, but north of east, and it sets later north of west, making the sun visible for a longer period of time. It is not until the end of August that the sun sets completely again, and even then only for a few minutes. Experience this fascinating phenomenon with us on our journey through the Arctic wilderness of Svalbard.
Dates for the summer solstice:
June 20, 2026 – June 27, 2026 | MS Hondius, max. 170 passengers
June 21, 2026 – June 28, 2026 | MS Plancius, max. 108 passengers

itinerary
You will land in Longyearbyen, the administrative center of Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago. Stroll through the former mining town, which offers fascinating sights such as its parish church and the Svalbard Museum. Although the landscape appears barren, more than a hundred plant species have been counted here. In the early evening, the ship leaves Isfjorden, where you may see the first minke whale of your journey.
The journey takes you into the pack ice and along the remote coasts of rugged North Spitsbergen. Possible places you could visit include:
Raudfjord
On the north coast of Spitsbergen, you can enjoy this expansive fjord with its glaciers – and perhaps even be visited by ringed seals and bearded seals. The cliffs and coastline are also home to thriving seabird colonies, lush vegetation, and the possibility of seeing polar bears. Attempts will be made to land at Alicehamna or Buchananhalvøya.
Monaco Glacier
Depending on the weather and sea ice conditions, you could sail in Liefdefjorden, land at Texas Bar, and cruise within sight of the 5 km long wall of the Monaco Glacier. The waters off this steep glacier are a popular feeding ground for thousands of kittiwakes, and the base of the ice is a popular hunting ground for polar bears. If ice conditions prevent the ship from sailing here at the beginning of the season, it is possible to sail along the west coast of Spitsbergen.
Highlights of Hinlopen
The goal is to sail into Hinlopen Strait, home to bearded seals, ringed seals, and polar bears. At the entrance, there is even the possibility of sighting blue whales. After navigating the Zodiacs between the ice floes of Lomfjord, you can view the bird cliffs of Alkefjellet with their thousands of guillemots. On the east side of Hinlopen Strait, you can attempt a landing on Nordaustlandet. Here you can see reindeer, pink-footed geese, and walruses. If the ice prevents entry into Hinlopen Strait, there is an alternative route.
The Seven Islands
The northernmost point of the journey could be north of Nordaustlandet on Chermsideøya or Phippsøya, the Seven Islands. Here you can reach 80° north, just 540 miles from the geographic North Pole. Since polar bears live in this region, the ship may park in the pack ice for several hours before turning westward again.
Sailing on the continental shelf
As the ship retraces its route westward, keep an eye out for polar bears and bowhead whales. About 40 nautical miles west of Spitsbergen, you will sail along the edge of the continental shelf. Here, fin whales feed in the summer in the upwelling areas (where cold, nutrient-rich water rises from the sea) along the Spitsbergen coast. At the mouth of Kongsfjord, you have a good chance of seeing minke whales.
Forlandsundet, St. Johns Fjord, or Alkhornet
Walruses sometimes hang out in Forlandsundet near Sarstangen or Poolepynten. Alternatively, we can sail into St. Johns Fjord or south to the mouth of Isfjorden and land at Alkhornet. Seabirds nest on these cliffs, arctic foxes search below for fallen eggs and chicks, and reindeer graze on the sparse vegetation.
Now the journey is coming to an end. The ship arrives back in Longyearbyen early in the morning, and bus transport to the airport is organized.
The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.
activities
Inclusive. Applies only to certain trips..
There really is no better way to get to know a new place than by exploring it on foot. With this in mind, we offer you the opportunity to explore the interior of the country from the polar coasts with a variety of snowshoe hikes suitable for everyone—from casual explorers to hardcore snowshoers.
Inclusive. Applies only to certain trips.
The photography workshop offers the opportunity to capture the indescribable experience of visiting the polar regions with incredible photos, with the help of professional photographers. Perfect your skills and get the most out of your personal camera equipment.
Only applies to certain trips. Please register when you make your booking. Places are limited.
One of the best things about a polar expedition is that you never stop exploring. Even when you think you've hiked every coastline, climbed every mountain, and seen every polar bear, there's still a whole other world to explore on the water. Polar kayaking is a great way to experience the blue and white beauty of the polar seas up close and visit breathtaking ice formations and waterways that are too small for our ships.
All kayaking tours are led by certified and experienced guides, but caution is always advised when kayaking in the polar regions.
One guide stays with the group in an escort kayak, while a safety boat follows behind in case of emergencies. All guides strive to tailor the excursions to the abilities of the group.
Kayaking tours are always determined by weather and water conditions, as your safety is our top priority.

*German language support
On board the expedition ships, the expedition team speaksEnglish and Germanduring the cruises.
For you, this means that all publications, such as ourin-flight magazine, daily programs, and notices, are also available in German. Menusare multilingual, so you can be sure you're always choosing the right thing. This also applies to announcements on board: to ensure you don't miss anything, these are always made in German as well. Do you have any specific questions or personal requests? Feel free to contact the German-speaking members of the expedition team at any time.
Your individual needs will also be taken into account during the diverse activities on the expedition cruises: for example, whenever possible, you will be divided into language groups for trips on Zodiac inflatable boats, and lectures will be held in German. You can always count on simultaneous translation.
**Bilingual trip (BI=bilingual)
On bilingual voyages, English is the main language spoken on board, but there are also several German-speaking expedition guides on board who act as the main contact persons for German-speaking guests.
Safety instructions, announcements, important onboard announcements, daily briefings, and summaries are provided in English and German.
Lectures in different languages may vary in content. There is no simultaneous translation of the lectures, but a summary in the second language may be given at the end of a lecture. The pace of the land activities depends on the group that each passenger chooses according to their physical abilities. In the Arctic, we aim to divide into three hiking groups: a challenging hiking group, a group with a moderate pace and more time for photography, and a leisurely group. A German-speaking guide is not necessarily available for every group. Even during Zodiac trips, the driver/guide of each boat is not necessarily bilingual.
