NIHI Sumba

Thatched villas with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean

NIHI Sumba | Sumba, Indonesia

Is it possible to be very close to paradise?

Yes, on the island of Sumba in Indonesia, 400 kilometers east of Bali, you are right in the middle of it all.

Despite its proximity to Bali, Sumba is very different: Sumba is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, only half the size of Bali, and there is no mass tourism, just wild, untamed nature. The island is surrounded by secluded sandy beaches. Inland, there are fascinating waterfalls, lush green forests, rivers, rice fields, and traditional villages.

By the time you arrive at the Nihi Sumba hotel on the west coast of the island, you will have no doubt that you have truly arrived in paradise.

Behind a pristine long sandy beach, around 30 thatched villas nestle harmoniously in the tropical landscape. Each residence has its own natural charm.
The spacious indoor and outdoor living areas offer guests a successful combination of style, elegance, and enjoyment—an atmosphere in which you are guaranteed to feel at home.

The panoramic view of the Indian Ocean is too beautiful to put into words.

Lush, exotic gardens with private pools dot the extraordinary resort.

Perched above the ocean waves, the Boathouse Spa offers massages, yoga, and meditation exercises for gentle deceleration and soothing relaxation of body and mind.

For those who prefer something a little more athletic, the sea is ideal for diving or snorkeling. The waves of the Indian Ocean are perfect for surfing. The island also offers a wide range of activities for hikers, cyclists, and horse riding enthusiasts.

The owner of the NIHI Sumba hotel supports the Sumba Foundation, which is committed to health and education projects on the island. You have the opportunity to help intensify these activities with your donation.

NIHI Sumba is one of the best hotels in the world, as proven by its awards for exclusive design and sustainability.
A truly paradisiacal place in Indonesia.

RESTAURANT OMBAK
The main restaurant Ombak (meaning wave front) with sand floor and bar lounge is an exquisitely designed open-air restaurant where breakfast and dinner are served daily à la carte in a relaxed, convivial atmosphere. During the week, special dining experiences including spectacular BBQs are created. The large outdoor deck, cantilevered over the ocean, offers relaxed lounge seating and a spectacular private dining experience.

NIO BEACH CLUB & POOL
Just a few steps from the sea, the Nio Beach Club offers open-air pavilions where fresh, top-quality ingredients are served for lunch: Whether it's fish freshly caught from the sea, delicious vegetables and legumes from the three organic gardens, tasty grilled dishes, the daily rotisserie, or freshly prepared pizzas from the wood-fired clay oven, the chef and his team will satisfy your appetite with delicious, healthy dishes.

KABOKU
Visit Kaboku for an intimate meal featuring freshly caught seafood prepared omakase style. Omakase is a Japanese phrase meaning "I leave it to you." Watch the sushi chefs prepare a seven-course meal for you with a selection of the day's catch, set against the backdrop of brilliant sunsets and a roaring beach fire. The chic structure captures a high-end Japanese sushi bar environment while being surrounded by the typical open-air resort ambiance. The restaurant is open five nights a week by reservation.

*Kaboku is not included in the daily rate for accommodation. Please inquire about price and availability. A cancellation fee of 50% applies.

MEX’IKAN
Mex’Ikan is a waterfront tapas bar serving tacos, ceviche, pepitas arepas, and much more, with a first-class selection of mezcals, piscos, and tequilas. A daily menu prepared with natural and fresh ingredients from the organic garden and the catch of the day from the sea makes it a popular choice for a late lunch or casual dinner.

spa

Embark on therapeutic journeys that transcend your mind and body, supported by healing blends of pure essential oils combined with gentle care and energy work. Perched above the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean, the Boathouse Spa is a true experience. You can enjoy a wide range of treatments, scrubs, manicures, pedicures, manual therapies, and massages in the privacy of your own villa or in one of the picturesque spa areas.

Yoga

Wellness and yoga are an integral part of the Nihi Sumba experience. The design of the yoga pavilion reflects this perfectly: a breathtaking platform on a rocky ridge offers sweeping views of Nihiwatu Beach on the Indian Ocean.
The yoga schedule caters to all levels and respects participants' limits, while promoting each student's highest potential through an integrated journey of body, mind, and spirit.
Free group classes are offered daily at the Mountain Pavilion, including Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, Restorative, Yin Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Breathwork, and Meditation. Private bookings are also available in the privacy of guest villas or at one of the island's stunning locations.

You will be taught by world-class instructors and accompanied by trained guides, ensuring you have unforgettable experiences.

Land-based activities

Explore the island and enjoy exciting excursions. Visit local Stone Age sites and traditional villages, picnic beneath majestic waterfalls, or hike along spectacular nature trails.
Whether on foot, by bike, on horseback, or on an open-air safari, the fully guided tours are all within an hour of the resort and are suitable for both slow walkers and experienced hikers. Depending on weather conditions, activities may only be available at certain times of the year.

Examples:

  • Sumba Expedition:
Traditional villages, lush rice fields, and majestic waterfalls. The journey begins near Wanukaka, where you will visit the ancient village of Weigali (home to the monolith that represents the Sumba Foundation). There you will receive an informative introduction to the Marapu way of life. After viewing some of the village's handicrafts, you will drive to Lapopu, a waterfall immersed in the jungle, where you can enjoy a picnic in front of the turquoise pools.

  • Blue Waterfall Trek:
Breathtaking views on the descent into Wanukaka Valley are a highlight of this 45-minute drive to Matayangu, the Blue Waterfall. After parking at the trailhead, you'll begin a 1.5-hour hike led by local guides through pristine Indonesian national parkland to the blue lagoon at the base of the waterfall, where you can spot wildlife such as long-tailed macaques, reticulated pythons, the Nusa Tenggara flycatcher, and citronella cockatoos. As the trail leads out of the jungle, the sheer size and scope of the waterfall basin is truly worth the walk. While you immerse yourself in your surroundings, the guides will prepare a picnic lunch. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing and swimming in this beautiful setting before returning to the vehicle. We recommend packing a sarong, swimsuit, extra shirt, sunscreen, camera, and sturdy shoes.

  • Rice Island Trek and Brunch:
This two-hour hike to Nihi's own "rice island" is a diaspora of sights and sounds, starting at the beach, crossing streams, passing through rice fields and along the edges of local villages, down through the agricultural heart of Sumba. Grazing water buffalo, giggling schoolchildren, and farmers bringing in their harvest add another special element to exploring this neighboring valley. After the two-hour hike, you'll be greeted with a picnic overlooking the sprawling rice fields below. The return to the resort in an open-air safari vehicle takes you through the villages, past schools and some health clinics supported by the Sumba Foundation. The entire experience offers further insight into Sumbanese culture.

  • Golfers and fishermen unite!
A platform can be set up at the boathouse where you can practice your swing while feeding the fish along the reef! The environmentally friendly balls are biodegradable and slowly release fish food!

  • For children: Kids' Clan
There is plenty of space for children, from toddlers to teenagers, to play and run around safely. From organized activities to a relaxing time in your private villa, you can decide how busy you want your clan to be. The staff will do their utmost to delight your child by creating memories that will last long after your stay. The focus is on engaging and immersive experiences that promote respect for the environment, build on the adventures of travel, and develop a curiosity for discovery. Watch with a smile as your child explores and grows through curated experiences. Creative workshops encourage young people's imaginations, allowing them to let off steam with crafts: art from recycled materials, sand sculptures, kite building, traditional Sumba dance classes, treasure hunts, rock painting, and much more.

Cultural activities

A stay at Nihi Sumba Resort combines the utmost comfort with the opportunity to immerse yourself authentically in the island's magnificently preserved ancient culture, soak up local traditions and flavors, and enjoy everyday life on Sumba. You can experience more of the wild and vibrant culture by visiting local villages and markets for local handicrafts, monumental megalithic tombs, and exquisite ikat weaving workshops that are renowned throughout the world.

Examples

  • Sumba Foundation Tour: Discover what the Sumba Foundation is doing across the island and what you are supporting as a guest. The resort is committed to promoting health, nutrition, and education and has enriched the lives of many local Sumba residents. Visit a local water project, a health clinic for malaria control, or volunteer for a morning as part of the school feeding program.

  • Natural Remedies Workshop: Take a stroll through the organic garden, where you will gather ingredients for preparing time-honored Indonesian herbal remedies such as jamu (an Ayurvedic-influenced drink from Java), asr aloe vera, and virgin coconut oil serum for sunburn. After the class, you can take your mixtures home with you.

  • Ikat weaving: Women from surrounding villages come to Nihi Sumba Resort throughout the week to set up shop at Pasar Sumba near Menara and weave traditional Sumbanese ikats, as well as bracelets, placemats, baskets, boxes, and containers made from pandanus or palm leaves. Learn this ancient art of weaving.

  • NIHI Pasola: The skilled riders from Pasola will give you a short demonstration and introduce you to the adrenaline-fueled tradition of spear throwing while dressed in traditional costume. Once you slip into the role, you will climb onto one of the Sumba ponies without a saddle from the safety of the riding arena to try your hand at spear throwing. This is great fun and offers great photo opportunities! Sumba ponies have bloodlines from Mongolian and Arabian horses that were purchased in Sumba to trade for the coveted local sandalwood and spices. Although a small breed, Sumba ponies are very agile and spirited, making them ideal horses for racing, the island's dominant sport. This has earned Sumba a reputation for having the fastest and most sought-after ponies in Indonesia.

Culinary delights

Sumba may be far away, but the culinary selection of island cuisine is vast. The menus at Nihi Sumba Resort reflect the many traditions—old and new, East and West—that make up Indonesia's diversity. Depending on your appetite, you can sample the flavors that define this corner of the world or fall back on familiar cuisines. For those who want to take a taste of Sumba home with them, the weekly menus alternate with themed meals, always including the fresh catch of the day. Cooking classes are also offered:

  • mixology course
  • Indonesian cooking class
  • Japanese cooking class
  • Chocolate-making course
