Train journey through England and Scotland

10-day train adventure through Great Britain

Europe

England

Scotland

15 - 26 people

10 days

No other country shaped the Industrial Revolution and the development of vast swathes of land by rail quite like Great Britain. The National Railway Museum in York preserves this heritage, and by traveling on the most beautiful railways in England, Wales, and Scotland, you can experience it firsthand—and if you've never understood what bucolic landscapes are, the view from the window will reveal the meaning of the term again and again. With London, Caernarfon, York, and Edinburgh, you will visit four of the most exciting places in the British Isles and travel through history.

itinerary

Day 1 Landing in London
A flight from Frankfurt to London will take you to the United Kingdom. Your tour guide will welcome you at Heathrow Airport and escort you to your comfortable hotel. Hyde Park is the perfect place to take a stroll, and at Speaker's Corner you can find out what's on the minds of the British. (A)
Day 2 Anglesey
After breakfast, you will set off for Bangor in Wales. There, the Anglesey peninsula is on your itinerary, where you will sweeten your day with a visit to a salt factory—followed by a tasting! You will spend the next two nights in a comfortable hotel in Bangor. (B)
Day 3 Caernarfon
In the morning, we will travel at full steam on the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway to Snowdonia National Park. This narrow-gauge railway was once used to transport the highly sought-after Welsh slate, which was already prized by the Romans. In the afternoon, you will visit Caernarfon Castle, built by Edward I to consolidate his power, which today has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (B)
Day 4 Chester
Today you will travel to York by train and bus. On the way there, you will visit Chester, a city originally founded by the Romans on the River Dee. Today's highlights of the city include Chester Cathedral, dating back to Norman times, and the medieval half-timbered houses of the old town, known as Chester Rows. (F)
Day 5 York
A closed city wall, a maze of medieval alleys, and overhanging house corners await you in the prettiest of the smaller towns in northern England. Together with your city guide, you will embark on a two-hour tour through 2,000 years of history—from the Romans to the Vikings to the present day. Afterwards, you will have plenty of time and leisure for your own discoveries. You can take a circular walk along the 5 km city wall and climb York Minster, the largest medieval church in England. Or how about a visit to the National Railway Museum? (F)
Day 6 Train experiences in moorland landscapes
Today's headline sounds a bit like it was taken from a menu – but isn't that fitting for two special treats? A historic train, a puffing steam locomotive, and great views of unspoiled moorland and lonely mountains – that's what awaits you on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. After riding on the country's second-longest museum railway, your bus will take you to Newcastle to catch your train to Glasgow, where you will check into your room at a comfortable hotel. (B)
Day 7 Glasgow and the West Highland Line
Today, you will embark on a train journey to the Scottish Highlands. Passing valleys, lakes, moors, and mountains, the journey takes you to the heart of Scotland, to Fort William, where you will spend the night in a hotel. Many consider this route to be the most beautiful railway line in the world. (FA)
Day 8 Via the Isle of Skye to Inverness
You start the day with a view of the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, over which Harry Potter traveled on the Hogwarts Express, before boarding the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale on the Isle of Skye. Spectacular mountain landscapes await you on Scotland's most famous island. Back on the mainland, you will board the train to Inverness in the late afternoon. Your train will roll along Loch Carron and over the 197-meter-high Luib Summit. (FA)
Day 9 Edinburgh
The last leg of your journey takes you from Inverness to Edinburgh. The train travels through the Scottish Highlands to the idyllic Firth of Forth, which you cross on the impressive Forth Railway Bridge. Your city guide will take you on a guided tour of the old town. The Royal Mile connects Holyrood Palace, the Scottish seat of the British monarch, with the famous Edinburgh Castle, which you will also marvel at from the inside. Numerous stories about Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns accompany you on this tour. (FA)
Day 10 Return flight
Take advantage of your hotel's central location in the two-hundred-year-old New Town for a stroll through the Georgian squares before a transfer takes you to the airport and you fly back to Frankfurt. (B)
