itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Helsinki!
Fly from Germany to Helsinki, Finland’s vibrant capital, which lies on the Baltic Sea, surrounded by countless islands. Over dinner at the elegant Kappeli restaurant, which boasts nearly 150 years of tradition, you’ll get to know your fellow travelers, and the anticipation for your extraordinary journey will grow. (D)
Day 2: From Helsinki to Lapland
You’ll see just how Finland’s capital city blends the old and the new on your city tour: on one side, the white cathedral with its turquoise dome and the golden onion domes of Uspenski Cathedral; on the other, the fascinating play of light in the modern Rock Cathedral. You’ll also visit the ancient fortress of Suomenlinna, which stretches across several islands. In the evening, the express train to Lapland awaits you at the main station. In comfortable sleeper compartments, it will take you north through the bright Finnish summer night. (FA)
Day 3: The Capital of Finnish Lapland
Forests and lakes as far as the eye can see—welcome to Lapland! Soon your train will arrive in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland and home to Santa Claus on the Arctic Circle. Inside the Arktikum’s impressive glass dome, everything revolves around the nature, culture, and people of the Arctic. A special experience awaits you this afternoon: On an easy one-hour hike, you’ll climb Mount Oulankaa and be rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view. Your dinner will be prepared for you in a traditional Finnish kota. Be sure to look up: in good weather, the midnight sun shines (in spring), and in late fall, with a bit of luck, you’ll see the fascinating Northern Lights. (D)
Day 4: The Magic of the Baltic Sea
Today’s drive from Rovaniemi across the border to Luleå, Sweden, begins with a journey through forests and lake country. Keep an eye out for reindeer and moose! The route then continues along the Baltic Sea coast, offering views of the archipelago. In the afternoon, explore Gammelstad, the 1,000-year-old old town of Luleå. This historic church village is Sweden’s largest and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its imposing 13th-century stone church bears witness to the region’s prosperity through the fur and salmon trades. Tonight, you’ll stay at a comfortable hotel in Luleå. (B, L)
Day 5: Crossing the Arctic Circle
From Luleå Station, you’ll embark on a fascinating train journey north along the Iron Ore Line to Narvik. Spruce and birch forests give way to desolate tundra, where herds of reindeer roam freely. You’ll transfer to a bus and continue your journey to Harstad, Norway, where you’ll stay for the next two nights. (B, L)
Day 6: In the Lofoten Islands
On today's full-day excursion, you'll discover the most beautiful spots on the stunning Lofoten Islands. (B, L)
Day 7: On the Water with the Mail Boat
You’ll spend the next leg of your journey aboard a coastal vessel. Cargo is still transported along this historic postal route today. In Tromsø, you’re welcome to stretch your legs a bit before enjoying dinner on board and retiring to your cabin. (FMA)
Day 8: The North Cape
Today you’ll arrive at the northernmost port on the postal route: Honningsvåg. Here you’ll disembark and take a bus to the northernmost point on the European mainland, the North Cape. You’ll spend the night in Honningsvåg at a hotel. (B)
Day 9: Alta
You can relax on the bus on the way to Alta. Once there, you’ll visit the museum in Alta, where you can see rock art dating back thousands of years. (FA)
Day 10: Farewell to Norway
You'll fly back home from Alta Airport. (F)
