itinerary

Day 1 Flight to Santiago de Compostela or Porto
Your tour guide will meet you at the airport—either in Santiago de Compostela or Porto, depending on your flight schedule. You will spend the next two nights in Santiago de Compostela. (D)
Day 2: Santiago de Compostela or Rías Baixas: Spain's fjord coast
This day is yours to explore on your own. Alternatively, you can join an optional excursion: Amid fabulously beautiful forests, the Atlantic Ocean cuts into the land, forming the Rías Baixas. In this part of Galicia, beautiful beaches and untamed nature await you. Enjoy your boat trip to the Cíes Islands (weather permitting). This archipelago is a unique paradise and the jewel of the Islas Atlánticas National Park. Its waterways and cliffs are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. A stroll on the fine sand or a quick dip in the clear water will round out your relaxing morning. In the afternoon, you’ll return to Santiago de Compostela. Here you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of the medieval city either with your tour guide or on your own. (FA)
Day 3 Santiago de Compostela: UNESCO World Heritage Site
Today, you’ll stroll through the narrow streets of this magical place with your tour guide. The city’s historic center has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Narrow alleys alternate with wide squares and centuries-old granite buildings, some of which date back to the Middle Ages. In the afternoon, you can join your tour guide on an optional excursion to discover the green side of Santiago de Compostela. In the evening, the moment has finally arrived: you board the legendary Al Ándalus. Its Belle Époque-style décor, its comfortable sleeper suites, the spacious lounge cars from the 1920s, the culinary delights... Look forward to an enjoyable journey with five nights on board. After a warm welcome, a typical Galician dinner awaits you in the excellent onboard restaurant as the Al Ándalus rolls south toward Ourense. (FMA)
Day 4 Galicia: Fine wines and wild landscapes
In the morning, you’ll explore Ourense on the Miño River. While you enjoy lunch on board, the Al Ándalus will continue southward. Welcome to the Ribeira Sacra, a Spanish wine-growing region in the northwestern region of Galicia, near the Portuguese border. An entertaining river cruise awaits you in the impressive Sil Canyon, with its gorges plunging up to 500 meters deep. (FMA)
Day 5 León and Ávila (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Early in the morning, the Al Ándalus arrives in Astorga. Even Pliny the Elder described the Roman settlement of Asturica Augusta as a magnificent city, as it was a crossroads of trade routes and military roads in the Roman province. In the morning, you’ll explore the historic episcopal city of León, one of the most important stops for pilgrims on the Way of St. James en route to Santiago de Compostela. A highlight in León: a visit to the Gothic cathedral, which rises imposingly over the Plaza de Regla with its nearly 70-meter-high towers. The journey continues deep into Castile-León to Ávila (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), whose massive 11th-century fortifications are among the best-preserved medieval city walls in the world. Gothic mansions, winding alleys, magnificent Romanesque churches, and the city’s landmark—the imposing 2.5-kilometer-long city wall with its 28 mighty towers—bear witness to Ávila’s incomparable history. While you enjoy dinner on board, the Al Ándalus rolls southward. Late in the evening, the Al Ándalus arrives in Aranjuez. (FMA)
Day 6 Toledo: UNESCO World Heritage Site
Toledo not only enchants visitors with its charm, but also boasts a stunning location. The city’s churches, palaces, and houses with their oriental-style architecture are perched on a granite hill surrounded on three sides by the deep gorge of the Tagus River. In the “City of Three Cultures,” as Toledo is known, Christians, Moors, and Jews have all left their mark throughout the city. You will see, among other sights, the cathedral, the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, the Santa María la Blanca Synagogue, and El Greco’s famous painting The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in the Church of San Tomé. The afternoon is at your leisure. In the evening, you can explore Aranjuez on your own if you wish. (FMA)
Day 7 Cordoba: UNESCO World Heritage Site
Today, Córdoba awaits you—a city where Moorish Spain experienced its intellectual, cultural, and economic heyday. The achievements made here would continue to have a profound impact far beyond the borders of Andalusia for many years to come. The Caliphate of Córdoba was established in the 10th century. At that time, approximately 500,000 people lived in Córdoba. During your tour of the old town, you’ll discover the city’s most significant architectural landmark: the Mezquita with its fascinating forest of columns—the former main mosque is now a Christian cathedral. The Alcázar, surrounded by magnificent gardens, also dates in part back to the Moorish era. After a stroll through the old alleys of the former Jewish quarter, enjoy your last evening aboard the Al Ándalus on your journey. (FMA)
Day 8 Seville: UNESCO World Heritage Site
Today it’s time to say goodbye to the legendary Al Ándalus. On your tour of Seville, you’ll see, among other things, the world’s largest Gothic cathedral. During your scenic drive to your deluxe hotel in the Old Town, you’ll discover wide boulevards along the Guadalquivir River. In the evening, take a short walk to a restaurant where you’ll enjoy an Andalusian dinner. (FMA)
Day 9: Seville
Enjoy a day off in Seville or take an optional excursion to the Archivo General de Indias. During your visit, you’ll learn fascinating facts about the history of Spanish expansion and the colonial era. This important archive in the heart of Seville is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses valuable records, letters, maps, and other documents chronicling the history of Spain and its colonies from the 15th to the 19th century. In the afternoon, you’ll have free time. Afterward, round out the evening with an Andalusian farewell dinner in a charming city palace. (FA)
Day 10 Return flight to Germany
During the day, transfer to the airport and return flight to Germany. (B)
