Day 1, Saturday: Santiago de Compostela – Viveiro
At noon, meet in Santiago de Compostela and tour the historic city center, which has been a pilgrimage destination for over a thousand years and is home to countless artistic treasures, particularly the beautiful cathedral. After lunch, take a bus to Ferrol, where the El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo will be waiting for you. Upon arrival, the onboard staff will serve a welcome drink. Train ride to Viveiro and tour of the historic center. Dinner and overnight stay on the train in Viveiro. (L)
Day 2, Sunday: Viveiro – Ribadeo – Luarca – Oviedo
Breakfast buffet or à la carte. Ride on the El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo to Ribadeo, a historic town in Galicia on the border with the Principality of Asturias. Followed by a bus ride along the coast of Lugo to Las Catedrales Beach. Panoramic tour of Ribadeo, followed by lunch. Bus ride to Luarca, the white town on the green coast, and a city tour. Then continue by train to Oviedo. Dinner and overnight stay on the train in Oviedo. (FMA)
Day 3, Monday: Oviedo – Gijón – Oviedo – Lianes
Your day begins with a tour of Gijón. After lunch, you’ll travel back to Oviedo, the capital of the Principality of Asturias and a prime example of Asturian pre-Romanesque art. After the tour, you’ll return to the train. Dinner and overnight stay on the hotel train in Lianes. (FMA)
Day 4, Tuesday: Llanes
Bus trip to the Principality of Asturias to the beautiful Picos de Europa National Park. You’ll see Lake Enol, the pilgrimage site of Santuario de Covadonga, and Cangas de Onís. Train ride to Llanes, a charming fishing village in eastern Asturias. City tour and free time. Dinner and overnight stay on the train in Llanes. (FMA)
Day 5, Wednesday: Llanes – Cabezón de la Sal
During breakfast, the train will take you to Cantabria. From Cabezón de la Sal, you’ll take a bus to Potes and travel through the impressive Desfiladero de la Hermida gorge. After a tour of the town, you can relax at the La Hermida spa. After lunch, you’ll visit Antonio Gaudí’s summer residence, El Capricho, in Comillas. Dinner and overnight stay on the train in Cabezón de la Sal. (FMA)
Day 6, Thursday: Cabezón de la Sal – Santander
Visit to Santillana del Mar, with its superbly preserved medieval old town. This is followed by a tour of the Altamira de Neocueva Museum, featuring a reproduction of Upper Paleolithic cave paintings. After lunch, take the train to Santander. City tour and free time. Overnight stay on the train in Santander. (FMA)
Day 7, Friday: Santander – Bilbao – Carranza
The El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo heads toward Bilbao: a vibrant city that has experienced a resurgence following the decline of its traditional heavy industry. The city tour includes a visit to the famous Guggenheim Museum. Lunch and free time. Dinner and overnight stay on the train in Carranza. (FMA)
Day 8, Saturday: Carranza – San Sebastián
During your final breakfast on board, you’ll return to Bilbao, where the El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo bus will be waiting to take you comfortably to San Sebastián. Enjoy a tour of this elegant city, which offers a wealth of cultural events. The trip concludes around noon following this visit. (B)
