Day 1 Flight to the Amazon
Today you will fly to Bogotá. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. (A)
Day 2 Welcome to the border triangle
Flight to Leticia in the Colombia-Brazil-Peru border triangle. In the port of the neighboring Brazilian town of Tabatinga, the crew welcomes you aboard the boutique ship MS Jangada. In the late afternoon, you explore Leticia on foot. The capital of the Colombian Amazon province offers a relaxed atmosphere and an exciting ethnological museum. At sunset, you will witness a curious sight in the well-kept city park: thousands of parrots returning noisily to their roosting trees! You will spend the next twelve nights in comfortable accommodation in your cabin on board. (FA)
Day 3 The Amazon Wonderland
Early in the morning, the MS Jangada reaches the neighboring town of Benjamin Constant. Here, after breakfast, you will go ashore and experience your first jungle excursion in the indigenous area. First, you will be welcomed by the Caçique (chief) of the Marubo. Together with the Marubo, you will embark on an exciting hike through the rainforest, where you will meet a small group of Matis. The Matis have only had contact with the outside world for a few decades and are still very authentic with their traditional way of life, which you will see for yourself during a demonstration of rituals and hunting techniques. After returning to the Marubo village, you will also gain an insight into their traditions there. Back on the MS Jangada, it's time to cast off! In the afternoon, an excursion with the excursion boats awaits you to observe the local wildlife. (FMA)
Day 4 Visiting the Ticuna
During the night, the MS Jangada anchored off the small town of Santa Rita. You are now deep in the territory of the Ticuna, one of Brazil's largest indigenous reserves. Here, you will spend the morning touring the village of Campo Allegre, which translates as "happy place," together with the caçique. In the afternoon, the program begins with a lecture on Brazil's indigenous population. This is followed by an exciting boat trip on the Rio Camatiã, near the city of São Paulo de Olivença. (FMA)
Day 5 Indigenous culture in the Amazon
During the night, the MS Jangada reaches the small town of Santo Antonio do Iça. In the morning, you will travel by motorboat along the idyllic Rio Iça to the Ticuna village of Bethania. There you will immerse yourself in the traditional culture of the Ticuna. The highlight is the ritual initiation dance Moça Nova with its imaginative masks and robes decorated with feathers and shells. After lunch with the Ticuna, you will return to the MS Jangada. In the afternoon, you will learn how to properly prepare a typical Brazilian caipirinha at the on-board bar. (FMA)
Day 6 At the end of the world
Early in the morning, the MS Jangada reached the small town of Jutaí. In the morning, you will first explore the surrounding rainforest by boat and then discover Jutaí, one of the typical small towns on the Amazon, where the very friendly people have almost no contact with the outside world. As you continue your journey through one of the most sparsely populated regions of the Amazon, you can relax on the sun deck and watch the river dolphins that appear again and again. In the afternoon, an excursion with the excursion boats awaits you to observe the wildlife. (FMA)
Day 7: Let's get down to brass tacks
The town of Fonte Boa is the northernmost point of your journey and only about 124 miles from the equator. After breakfast, you will set off on an excursion through one of the narrow side arms, where the banks on both sides are within reach. Here, the inhabitants live on the banks of the Pirarucú fish, which can grow up to 2 m long and weigh up to 150 kg. This fish is extremely tasty and is exported to countless countries. In the afternoon, an exciting lecture on environmental protection and nature conservation in Brazil will be given on board before you embark on a boat trip in the rainforest. (FMA)
Day 8 Mamirauá National Park
Today, you will visit the fascinating Mamirauá National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a highlight of your trip. Traveling by motorized canoe and on foot, you will search the treetops for the scarlet face of a uacari monkey or a large sloth. Huge colonies of cormorants, colorful parrots, and toucans also offer a spectacular sight. In the afternoon, marvel at a second excursion in this fascinating national park. After dinner, a spectacular night cruise awaits you to observe the diamond eyes of caimans and other nocturnal animals while listening to the nighttime sounds of the rainforest. (FMA)
Day 9: In the footsteps of the missionaries
Your ship departs at dawn, leaving Mamirauá National Park behind. After breakfast, you will first explore the city of Tefé, the largest town on your Amazon journey, with its lively market. Pupunha, graviola, taperibá – fruits you have never seen, let alone eaten, can be admired here. Next to Tefé is the 18th-century Salesian mission. The panoramic view from the monastery complex high above the river, which has been flowing sluggishly since time immemorial, is breathtaking. And the old monastery buildings, which are still in use today, hold many historical treasures. In the afternoon, a lecture on board will give you an insight into the history of Brazil up to the present day, before you get back into the boats to explore the beauty of the region. (FMA)
Day 10 Açai and Brazil nuts
Villa Lira is the starting point for today's forest hike. Around the village, you will learn a lot about harvesting the miracle berry açaí, about Brazil nuts, and how cassava root is processed. Back on board, a lecture on the açaí berry will round off your newly acquired knowledge. The MS Jangada then sails past the small town of Coarí to the mouth of the Rio Badajos, your destination for today. In the evening, you can watch the first part of Werner Herzog's classic Fitzcarraldo in the on-board cinema – the perfect film for your jungle adventure! (FMA)
Day 11 The fishermen of the Rio Purus
Early in the morning, you will explore the delta of the Rio Badajos tributary, which flows into the Amazon here after traveling more than 1,500 km from Colombia. Rare bird species, sloths, and howler monkeys can be found in this area. In the afternoon, you will watch the fishermen on the Rio Purus as they engage in the strenuous task of catching large catfish. After dinner, you will conclude the day with the second part of Fitzcarraldo. (FMA)
Day 12 Pink Dolphins
During the night, the MS Jangada anchored off Anamá. After a hearty breakfast, you will discover the flora and fauna of the region on an excursion before exploring the charming western town of Anamá on foot. Then the MS Jangada continues its journey towards Manaus. In the afternoon, a lecture will give you an insight into the history of the Amazon River. Your destination for the day is the Rio Januacá, where pink dolphins often frolic at the mouth of the river. (FMA)
Day 13 Two rivers, two colors
Early in the morning, you will set off on an exploratory trip on the Rio Januacá. Here, you will often encounter macaws and toucans in addition to large iguanas and caimans. And you will soon embark on your next adventure in the program: you will try your hand at fishing for sharp-toothed piranhas. In the afternoon, a magnificent natural spectacle awaits you: the black waters of the Rio Negro meet the light brown Amazon. Both rivers flow side by side in the same riverbed for miles without mixing. Shortly before Manaus, the MS Jangada turns into Lake Januari for the last night on board, where you will spend the night. Day 14 Manaus – Opera city in the jungle
After breakfast, it's time to say goodbye to your beautiful ship and the lovely crew. A short city tour will give you a better understanding of Manaus, the city with the famous opera house in the jungle. Afterwards, you will fly to Rio de Janeiro. Here you will spend the night in a comfortable hotel right on Copacabana Beach. (B)
Day 15 Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro
Before you start your journey home, take a detour to one of the world's most famous photo opportunities: Sugarloaf Mountain with its giant statue of Cristo Redentor. Then transfer to the airport and fly back home. (B)
