Day 1: Departure from Tahiti (Papeete)
You’ll board the Aranui 5 between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The ship departs from Papeete around 12:00 p.m. The crew will give you a warm welcome before you set off on your journey toward the Tuamotu Archipelago.
Please note:
In 2027, the trip will be one day longer, lasting 13 days / 12 nights. Starting on Day 6, the itinerary changes so that you’ll spend an extra day in the Marquesas. We’d be happy to send you the complete 2027 itinerary with detailed descriptions of each day upon request.
Day 2: Fakarava, Tuamotu Archipelago
Fakarava is the second-largest atoll in French Polynesia and has been designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO to protect rare animal and plant species. The Aranui 5 docks in Rotoava, the atoll’s main town.
Take this opportunity to explore the small village, visit the church built from coral, and discover traditional handicrafts. During a hands-on demonstration, you’ll also learn more about the many uses of coconuts.
Enjoy a relaxing day in this tropical setting—whether you're sunbathing, swimming, or snorkeling among colorful fish. Certified divers can explore the fascinating underwater world on a dive.
At 12:00 p.m., you will return on board for lunch. Afterward, the Aranui 5 will continue its journey toward the Marquesas Islands.
Day 3: At sea
Spend a relaxing day aboard the Aranui 5 —whether on the pool deck, in the comfortable, air-conditioned lounge, or simply enjoying the breathtaking views of the South Pacific. As the ship sets course for the fascinating Marquesas Islands, you’ll have plenty of time to unwind.
Fascinating lectures on the history and culture of the Marquesas will transport you back in time and give you a fascinating glimpse into the millennia-old Polynesian civilization. If you’re in the mood to get moving, you can also learn to sway your hips like a true Tahitian.
In the evening, the bar is the perfect place to meet other travelers and adventurers from all over the world. The warm and lively Polynesian crew will share their culture with you and provide authentic entertainment with traditional songs and rousing rhythms on ukuleles, guitars, and drums.
Day 4: Nuku Hiva (Taiohae/Hatieu/Taipivai)
While the Aranui 5 is being unloaded, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Taiohae, the small administrative capital of the Marquesas. The picturesque bay of Taiohae is also historically significant: it was here in 1842 that the writer Herman Melville and a friend, then young sailors, jumped ship from a whaling vessel.
After breakfast, you’ll disembark and board the waiting SUVs that will take you on your day trip. Your first stop is the Taiohae Cathedral. Afterward, you’ll have time to tour the cathedral or explore the local market and purchase traditional handicrafts.
Next, we’ll head to the Tohua Kamuihei archaeological site, which is characterized by imposing banyan trees and fascinating petroglyphs. For lunch, you’ll enjoy your first taste of traditional Marquesan cuisine. Accompanied by local music, you’ll experience the island’s warm and welcoming atmosphere.
In the small village of Hatiheu, you'll have the opportunity to visit a museum featuring replicas of rock art from valleys that have not yet been explored.
The tour then heads back south toward Taiohae. Enjoy the spectacular view of the bay of the same name—a massive volcanic amphitheater surrounded by towering cliffs and impressive waterfalls.
Back in the village of Taiohae, you'll have some time left to explore the area. Here you'll find banks and shops, among other things. Afterward, you can return to the ship on foot or by car.
Day 5: Ua Pou (Hakahau)
Even from the decks, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the striking mountain peaks of Ua Pou. While the crew unloads essential supplies such as cement and sugar and takes sacks of copra (dried coconuts) and fresh fruit on board, you’ll have time to explore the picturesque village of Hakahau.
Visit the local church with its intricately hand-carved wooden platform and meet the island’s talented woodcarvers and artists. Those who venture up to the cross will be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of the imposing mountains, the lush green valleys, and the village.
For lunch, you’ll once again enjoy delicious Marquesan cuisine. Look forward to traditional specialties such as breadfruit—a staple food in the Marquesas—spicy goat curry, raw fish marinated in lemon juice and coconut milk, as well as taro and sweet red bananas.
The grand finale is a rousing traditional dance performance, including the famous “Bird Dance” of Ua Pou —a fascinating glimpse into the island’s vibrant culture and traditions.
Day 6: Ua Huka (Vaipe’e/Hane/Hokatu)
The largely arid island of Ua Huka, where the first airstrip in the Marquesas was built in 1972, is home to numerous wild horses, goats, and pigs.
Early in the morning, a spectacular maneuver awaits you on board: In Vaipaee’s impressive “Invisible Bay,” the ship will perform a 180-degree turn. This challenging maneuver requires a great deal of experience and skill from the captain and crew—an experience you won’t want to miss.
Once ashore, you’ll first visit a small museum featuring ornate replicas of traditional Marquesan art. Our guides will provide you with fascinating insights into the history and culture of this captivating archipelago.
Afterward, you’ll explore Ua Huka in an SUV. The drive takes you to spectacular viewpoints and the arboretum, which was created out of the passion of the island’s former mayor. The tour continues to the picturesque village of Hane.
For lunch, stop at a local family-run restaurant and enjoy the opportunity to sample some of the island’s culinary specialties. Afterward, discover the traditional handicrafts of Ua Huka, including intricate wood carvings and delicately engraved coconut shells.
After lunch, we'll head back to the ship in an SUV. For those with a particularly adventurous spirit, there's the option to hike the approximately 3-kilometer route from the treehouse back to the ship.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the stunning scenery as the Aranui 5 cruises along the coast of Ua Huka, offering you spectacular views of the island and its rugged coastline time and again.
Please note the revised itinerary for departures in 2028: Tahuata and Hiva Oa will be visited on Day 6, Fatu Hiva on Day 7, and Ua Huka on Day 8. We would be happy to send you the complete 2028 itinerary with detailed descriptions of each day upon request.
Day 7: Tahuata (Vaitahu) – Hiva Oa (Atuona)
The Aranui 5 is anchored in a small, sheltered bay on Tahuata. Since the island has no airport, it is accessible only by sea.
On this leaf-shaped island, the scent of tiare and frangipani hangs in the air—as do the traces of an eventful history. In 1595, Spanish explorers went ashore in the village of Vaitahu. Their encounter with the curious islanders ended tragically: about 200 people lost their lives in the clashes. Tahuata was also the site where the first French colony in the Marquesas was founded in 1842.
This imposing church, built by the Vatican, features stunning Marquesan carvings and colorful stained-glass windows depicting, among other things, the Virgin Mary. Tahuata is also known for its extraordinary carvings made from bone and conch shells. In the village, you’ll find a wide selection of these traditional handicrafts.
After lunch on board, the Aranui 5 continues its journey to Hiva Oa. In Atuona, the second-largest town in the Marquesas, you’ll have plenty of time to follow in the footsteps of famous artists. The French painter Paul Gauguin lived and worked here, creating some of his most significant works on Hiva Oa. Visit the general store where he once bought his bread, as well as a reconstruction of his legendary “house of joy” and the local museum.
We’ll then take the SUV to the largest archaeological site in the Marquesas, Tohua Taa’oa. A walk up to the cemetery is rewarded with a spectacular view of the nearby Motu Hanakee.
Day 8: Fatu Hiva (Omoa – Hanavave)
Fatu Hiva, the most lush and at the same time the most remote of the Marquesas Islands, is considered one of the centers of traditional Marquesan arts and crafts.
In the village of Omoa, the women offer a glimpse into the traditional craft of making tapa, which involves processing the bark of mulberry, banyan, or breadfruit trees. They also demonstrate how the fragrant floral bouquet “Umuhei” is made—a blend of various plants native to the island that is traditionally used to perfume the hair.
After visiting Omoa, active passengers can look forward to a roughly 16-kilometer hike to Hanavave. The challenging trail winds through the stunning landscape of Fatu Hiva and offers spectacular views of the towering cliffs. A picnic lunch is served at the summit.
Those who don't want to hike can enjoy the trip aboard the Aranui 5 from Omoa to Hanavave. The destination is the famous Bay of the Virgins, which is considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world.
In the village, you’ll also learn more about the traditional production of coconut oil (“Pani”) and the fragrant cloth “Aeu Pipi.”
At the end of the voyage, an atmospheric farewell ceremony awaits you on Deck 7, where you can say goodbye to the Marquesas.
Day 9: At sea
Take advantage of this day to relax after the memorable experiences in the Marquesas Archipelago and enjoy the rest of the trip at your own pace.
During the voyage to the idyllic Tuamotu Islands, a varied program awaits you on board, featuring interesting lectures and a variety of activities. At the same time, there will be plenty of time to enjoy the amenities of the Aranui 5 and take in the vast expanse of the South Pacific as it passes by.
Day 10: Rangiroa or Makatea
Rangiroa
From the open decks of the Aranui 5, watch as the ship arrives at the largest atoll in French Polynesia and one of the largest atolls in the world. The ship sails through the Tiputa Pass, one of the two natural passages connecting the Rangiroa lagoon to the open ocean.
If you’d like to explore the fascinating underwater world, you can take a glass-bottom boat tour or—if you’re a certified diver—go on a dive. Diving in Rangiroa is one of the most spectacular experiences in the region. You can sign up for the tours at the front desk.
Those who prefer to stay on land can relax on the white sandy beach, swim in the crystal-clear lagoon, or browse the small stalls run by the “mamas.” Among other things, they sell handmade seashell necklaces, pendants, keychains, and other souvenirs.
Around noon, it’s time to “cast off” once again: The Aranui 5 continues its journey and sets course for the fascinating island of Bora Bora.
Makatea (trip only: Dec. 19–30, 2026)
Makatea is the only elevated atoll in the Tuamotu Islands with natural freshwater sources from underground caves. This extraordinary atoll is surrounded by imposing cliffs that rise to a height of about 70 meters.
From 1917 to 1964, intensive phosphate mining turned Makatea into a prosperous atoll. Today, the island is largely deserted; only a few families still live there. They make their living primarily by growing copra, fishing, and collecting and trading coconut crabs (“kaveu”).
The Aranui 5 offers you the opportunity to discover the traces of this eventful past and the remnants of the once-thriving phosphate mining industry. You’ll disembark at the Temao pier via the tender and then explore the atoll on foot or by vehicle.
A visit to the sacred caves of Makatea is a truly special experience. To round off the day, enjoy a picnic surrounded by the stunning scenery—either at the foot of the imposing cliffs or right on the beach.
Day 11: Bora Bora
Upon arrival at the world-famous lagoon of Bora Bora, you’ll be greeted by a spectacular display of vibrant blues and greens. Mount Otemanu, Bora Bora’s highest peak, rises majestically above this paradise island.
Spend a relaxing day on a gorgeous beach and enjoy a delicious barbecue on the private Motu Tapu, a small island surrounded by crystal-clear water.
Guests who want to actively explore the lagoon and its fascinating underwater world can choose from a variety of excursions for an additional fee. Options include diving excursions, lagoon tours by boat or motorized canoe, and encounters with sharks and rays.
You can also explore the history of Bora Bora on a 4×4 tour. During World War II, the island served as an American military base. Even today, relics such as cannons and bunkers bear witness to that era.
In the evening, it's time to say goodbye: The Aranui 5 leaves Bora Bora and sets course for Papeete.
Day 12: Return to Tahiti (Papeete)
Your journey aboard the Aranui 5 is coming to an end. After unforgettable days filled with fascinating landscapes, authentic encounters, and unique insights into Polynesian culture, it’s now time to say goodbye.
Say goodbye to your fellow travelers, the warm and welcoming Polynesian crew, and the dedicated Aranui guides: “Nānā!”

If climatic conditions or other unforeseeable circumstances force passengers to extend their stay by one or more nights, passengers must cover the additional hotel and meal costs themselves. The primary function of the ship in the service of the Compagnie Polynesienne de Transport Maritime is the transport of goods. For this reason, there may be changes to departure dates, ports of call, and the duration of the voyage. These changes may occur both before the departure date and during the voyage. Passengers on board the cargo ship must therefore be prepared for a relatively flexible itinerary and take the aforementioned changes into account. While we will do everything in our power to inform and assist our passengers, CPTM and its representatives decline to pay for any additional costs, hotel or meal expenses that may arise in connection with delays or changes to the itinerary or schedule.
