12 days (11 nights) 12 days (11 nights) In the Footsteps of Erik the Red, departing from Reykjavik and traveling via the Sermilik Fjord and Nuuk to Kangerlussuaq | includes a charter flight between Kangerlussuaq and Copenhagen

Join us on an expedition cruise from Reykjavík to Kangerlussuaq and follow the historic sea routes taken by the Nordic settlers to Greenland. On this special journey, experience the diversity of East, South, and West Greenland—from the spectacular icebergs of Sermilik to the bustling mini-metropolis of Nuuk. Fortunately, this ship—built specifically for expeditions—offers far more comfort and style than a Viking ship!

The journey begins on Greenland’s rugged east coast, a region whose culture is shaped by centuries-old Inuit traditions. In Tasiilaq and Kuummiut, you’ll learn about the culture of the Tunumiit. In Ikateq, you’ll encounter traces of Greenland’s recent military history before exploring the impressive ice landscape of the Sermilik Fjord.

The route then heads south into the tranquil expanse of the Skjoldungen Fjord, through the glacier-lined Prins Kristiansund, and on into the green valleys of South Greenland. Gentle hills and fertile valleys characterize this landscape, which once attracted Nordic settlers as well. In Qassiarsuk, you’ll visit the historic site of Brattahlíð, where, according to tradition, Erik the Red’s farmstead was located. A hike will take you to Igaliku, once the seat of the Greenlandic bishops.

Continuing along the stunning coastline, you’ll reach Nuuk, Greenland’s colorful capital. Despite its modest size, it offers remarkable diversity: modern architecture, interesting museums, and small boutiques define the cityscape. At the same time, Nuuk has retained its distinctive Greenlandic character. Traditional wooden houses stand side by side with modern glass towers, while the city market also offers regional specialties such as seal and whale meat.

From Nuuk, the journey continues to Kangaamiut. The village is nestled in a stunning fjord landscape of islands, mountains, and glaciers and is deeply rooted in Greenlandic traditions. In the afternoon, you’ll explore the nearby Eternity Fjord, also known as the “Ewiger Fjord” in German. Steep cliffs and imposing glaciers characterize this striking Arctic landscape.

Route Map for the Trip "In the Footsteps of Erik the Red"

itinerary

Two polar bears

Depending on the dates, we offer this trip in two directions:
From Reykjavík, Iceland, to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. We describe this route day by day here.

The trip in the opposite direction begins in Copenhagen, Denmark, with a transfer to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, and ends in Reykjavík, Iceland. We’d be happy to send you a detailed itinerary upon request.

We recommend that you arrive at least one day before departure to allow for any flight irregularities and possible baggage loss.

Day 1: Embarkation in Reykjavík

The rock-like columns of Hallgrímskirkja Church tower over the city of Reykjavík, the trendy Scandinavian capital that needs little introduction. With its new Nordic cuisine, excellent shopping, fantastic excursions, and a laid-back atmosphere, Reykjavík is one of the most welcoming and exciting cities in Scandinavia. Located in the heart of the North Atlantic, Reykjavík is the perfect starting point for Arctic adventures!

Our specially built expedition ship awaits in the city’s bustling harbor, ready to welcome our guests. After the mandatory safety drill, you’ll enjoy dinner and a glass of champagne as we follow the thousand-year-old maritime route of the Norsemen toward Greenland.

Halgrim Church in Reykjavík

Day 2: Crossing the Denmark Strait

Just like the Nordic explorers of old, we’re crossing the Denmark Strait from Iceland to Greenland. Days at sea are never boring.

The Denmark Strait is teeming with marine life. Join your expedition team on deck to keep an eye out for wildlife. As the ship approaches the Greenlandic coast, the team will share fascinating insights into the region’s ecology, geology, and wildlife. You’ll also receive important briefings on the upcoming Zodiac excursions and how to stay safe in polar bear habitat.

Day 3: Tasiilaq – East Greenland

Tasiilaq is the largest settlement in East Greenland and is located on the rugged island of Ammassalik. Tasiilaq was founded in 1894 as a Danish mission and trading post. The vast distances and difficult travel conditions along the ice-covered east coast meant that the Tunumiit, the Inuit of East Greenland, lived largely isolated from the communities in the west for a long time. As a result, they developed their own linguistic and cultural traditions.

Ancient spiritual beliefs also shape the region’s cultural heritage. Among these is the Tupilak, a once-feared monster that, according to legend, was created from animal (and sometimes human) body parts and brought to life through magical rituals to harm enemies. When European explorers sought to learn more about these creatures, local artists began depicting them in the form of carved figures made of wood, bone, or horn. This tradition gave rise to an art form that is well-known today. The Tupilak figures from the Tasiilaq region are particularly renowned.

During your visit, with a little luck, you can experience traditional drum dances, meet sled dogs (with their owners' permission), hike through the tundra, and visit the well-known Stunk art studio.

Tasiilaq in East Greenland
The Abandoned Ikateq Military Base

Day 4: Ikateq and Kuummiit

In the morning, you’ll approach Ikateq, also known as Bluie Two East. The abandoned military base serves as a reminder of the American presence in Greenland during World War II. American forces established an air base here to serve as a staging ground for aircraft traveling between Europe and North America. The rugged landscape of East Greenland made the approach to the airport dangerous, as thick fog often concealed the treacherous mountains. The U.S. military left the base in 1947, leaving almost everything behind.

In the afternoon, you’ll continue on to Kuummiit, a small village on the tranquil Ammassalik Fjord. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to chat with the locals and learn about East Greenlandic culture. The encounters with the locals and the stunning landscape will give you an authentic glimpse into life on Greenland’s east coast.

Day 5: Sermilikfjord – East Greenland

Your next destination is the impressive Sermilik Fjord, a vast fjord dotted with icebergs between the island of Ammassalik and the Greenlandic mainland. The icebergs here come mainly from the Helheim Glacier.

Huge masses of ice break off from the Greenland ice sheet and drift out into the North Atlantic as icebergs. This creates a breathtaking natural landscape whose scale is almost impossible to comprehend.

The activities available depend on ice conditions. When conditions are right, you’ll explore the surroundings on a shore excursion or take a Zodiac ride through the ice with your expedition team. You’ll get up close to massive icebergs and discover fascinating natural ice formations that have taken tens of thousands of years to form.

No matter what kind of exploration the conditions allow—the breathtaking world of ice, water, and rugged coastlines will leave you with unforgettable memories.

Zodiac trip
The Skjoldings

Day 6: Skjoldungen (Saqqisikuik)

Today you will explore Skjoldungen, a stunning fjord on the southeastern coast of Greenland. Its Danish name derives from Skjold, a legendary Danish king. Archaeological findings show that the region was inhabited by early Inuit cultures and their ancestors as far back as thousands of years ago.

In 1938, about 150 people from the Ammassalik region were resettled in Skjoldungen. However, the difficult living conditions and limited opportunities for hunting and fishing led the last residents to leave the region again in 1964–65. Some of the houses from that time can still be seen today on the southern shore of the fjord. During World War II, there was also a small Allied weather station here.

Today, Skjoldungen is uninhabited and lies about 300 kilometers from the nearest village. The landscape is characterized by rugged, jagged mountain peaks and glistening glaciers that line the deep, cold waters of the fjord.

At the end of the fjord lies the Thryms Glacier, a mighty ice stream flowing down into the valley from the Greenland Ice Sheet. To the south of it lies Dronning Maries Dal, a vast, U-shaped valley whose shape has been carved by the force of the glaciers.

Weather permitting, go ashore to explore the area or take a Zodiac ride along the impressive glacier front.

Day 7: Prins Christian Sund and Aappilattoq

In the morning, you’ll sail through the spectacular Prins Christian Sund, a strait about 60 kilometers long and dotted with icebergs that connects eastern and western Greenland. Surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and deeply carved valleys, it is one of the most impressive waterways in the world.

In the afternoon ,you’ll arrive in Aappilattoq,a remote village at the end of Prins Christian Sund, nestled in a landscape dominated by majestic mountains. Here, daily life follows the rhythms of the wind, waves, and tides more closely. The name Aappilattoq means “red” in Greenlandic and refers to the reddish granite rocks in the surrounding area. The region offers delightful hiking opportunities; in addition, the local choir is well known far beyond the village’s borders.

Erik the Red, Qassiarsuk

Day 8: Qassiarsuk and Itilleq Kujalleq

Early in the morning, the Ocean Victory passes the majestic mountains of the Tunulliarfik Fjord on its way to the small bay of Itilleq. Greenland’s southern fjords offer a very different environment from the cold north and east of the country. Located at approximately 60° north latitude, the region enjoys comparatively mild climatic conditions. Green pastures and small sheep farms characterize parts of the landscape; Qassiarsuk and Igaliku are among the well-known settlements in this region.

The present-day village of Qassiarsuk was founded in 1924 and stands on the site of Brattahlíð, the 10th-century farmstead of Erik the Red. According to legend, his wife, Thjodhild, refused to share a bed with her pagan husband until he had a church built for her, which he eventually did.

In the afternoon, you’ll hike from nearby Itilleq to Igaliku to visit the ruins of Garðar, the former center of Norse rule in Greenland. The sites of Brattahlíð and Garðar are now part of the Kujataa UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 9: At Sea, En Route to Nuuk

Starting in southern Greenland, you’ll follow the rugged coastline of this vast island northward. All settlements in Greenland (with the exception of Kangerlussuaq) are located directly on the coast, and the vast majority of the population lives along the narrow coastal strip in the western part of the country, which faces the Davis Strait.

Keep an eye out on this day at sea: Warm Atlantic currents make these waters particularly rich in food and attract whales, seals, and a variety of seabirds.

Day 10: Nuuk – Greenland's Capital

A mix of skyscrapers and traditional wooden houses, charming and cosmopolitan—Nuuk is a city of contrasts. With its 20,000 residents, Greenland’s lively capital feels much larger and offers visitors a wealth of experiences.

The region has been inhabited since around 2200 B.C.—first by Paleo-Inuit, and later by Nordic settlers. Today, Nuuk is the cultural and political center of Greenland. Attractions include the Greenlandic Parliament, the National Museum with the mummies of Qilakitsoq, the Katuaq Cultural Center, as well as local art galleries and cozy cafés.

The locals affectionately call their city “Nuuk York.” Here, history dating back thousands of years meets modern city life.

Day 11: Kangaamiut and Eternity Fjord

On the last full day of your trip, you’ll arrive in Kangaamiut, a Greenlandic village where hunting, fishing, and the changing weather conditions continue to shape daily life to this day. A hike will offer you sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Encounters with the local community, traditional crafts, regional specialties, and cultural performances will give you a glimpse into local life.

In the afternoon, you’ll explore Evighedsfjorden on a Zodiac tour. The Danish name “Evighedsfjorden” means “Eternal Fjord” and refers to the immense size of the inlet, while the Greenlandic name “Kangerlussuatsiaq” translates to “The Rather Large Fjord”—an understatement!

Passing by majestic glaciers and steep cliffs teeming with seabirds, you’ll once again experience Greenland’s fascinating landscape—a spectacular conclusion to your Arctic expedition.

Arctic fjord in western Greenland

Day 12: Kangerlussuaq – Disembarkation

To conclude your trip, you’ll travel through the approximately 160-kilometer-long Kangerlussuaq Fjord to Kangerlussuaq, where you’ll disembark via Zodiac. The town is best known for its military history during the Cold War and its importance as a transportation hub.

The surrounding Arctic wilderness, with its vast landscapes and breathtaking natural scenery, provides a special finale to your expedition.

The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.

*The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon. They appear in the Arctic under certain conditions between late August and early April. We cannot guarantee that they will appear during your trip.

KAYAK

Glide through the waters and admire the majestic beauty of the icebergs. Observe the various birds and seals—and perhaps even whales—in their natural habitat, under the guidance of experienced kayak guides who will ensure your safety throughout the excursion.

Exercise your body, mind, and heart during this unforgettable excursion, safely guided by expert kayakers. Kayaking activities are offered on both Arctic and Antarctic voyages.

Although kayaking is possible in most locations during any Arctic excursion, weather, sea, and ice conditions will determine when and where it is safe to do so and will enhance your experience.

To register for this activity, you must have kayaking experience and participate in a mandatory safety briefing conducted by the kayaking instructor.

This program is designed for anyone who wants to get a first taste of kayaking in the polar regions. Each participant takes part in one kayaking excursion per trip. The group consists of 14 people and is accompanied by its own team of guides as well as a support Zodiac. The number of available kayaking spots varies depending on the trip duration, route, and weather conditions. The goal is to take groups out on the water whenever conditions permit.

Advance booking is recommended. A 20% deposit is required to secure your reservation. Since the number of available kayak spots varies depending on the ship, itinerary, and duration of the trip, the number of spots available for advance booking is intentionally limited. Additional spots may be offered on board, if available. Spots are allocated based on availability and in the order in which requests are received.

Additional kayaking excursions can be booked on board for an extra charge, provided there are available spots.

Important Information

Participants must be at least 12 years old, in reasonably good health, able to swim, and have at least some paddling experience. The maximum weight limit is 118 kg per person.

Before the first kayaking trip, the guides provide a detailed explanation of the equipment and how to use it, as well as the basic rules for paddling a sea kayak.

The trips usually last between one and three hours.

Prices are per trip. Participation options vary depending on the trip.

PHOTOGRAPHY COACH ON BOARD

During Zodiac trips, shore excursions, and while on deck, photography coaches are always on hand to offer tips and advice. They also hold regular presentations to teach helpful techniques so you can master the unique challenges of photographing in the polar regions, which are both unique and unpredictable.

Your photography coach will also capture the highlights of your expedition in photos. As a lasting memento, you’ll receive the photos on a USB drive, which you can share with family and friends when you get home.

Available to all guests on every trip—free of charge.

CITIZEN SCIENCE PROGRAM

As a traveler, you can actively contribute to various projects by collecting data and helping to deepen our understanding of the ecosystems in the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as the impacts of climate change.

This support is particularly valuable in the polar regions: It makes it possible to facilitate long-term scientific observations that academic research teams would be unable to conduct on-site on a sustained basis on their own.

The projects offered may vary slightly depending on the voyage and current scientific needs. All guests are warmly invited to participate. For more information, please see the daily onboard program. Also, be sure to attend the scheduled introduction to citizen science at the start of your voyage.

Participation is free of charge.

TRIP TO THE REINDEER GLACIER, Kangerlussuaq

The inland ice is one of Greenland's biggest attractions, covering 80% of the country's surface. However, every year the size of this ice mass decreases as it melts more than it rebuilds. Our destination is the Reindeer Glacier, which rises like an ice wall up to 60 meters high and offers a striking contrast between land and ice.

The name “Reindeer Glacier” comes from the frequent sightings of reindeer, but even without these animals, this place is a world-class spectacle. It offers a wealth of photo opportunities and a tranquility that impressively showcases the pristine beauty of nature. The journey to one of the region’s most remarkable glaciers is made by Tundra bus, a four-wheel-drive vehicle well-suited for the rocky and varied terrain as well as the gravel roads.

Along the way, you can keep an eye out for the area's wildlife, especially reindeer and musk oxen, while listening to our tour guide's stories about the region's history and legends.

During the warm summer months, glaciers become increasingly thin and unstable within the colossal ice walls. These structures can suddenly calve and break, so it is important to keep a safe distance from the ice giants. After about a 90-minute drive, you will reach the magnificent Reindeer Glacier. Here you can hike along the edge of the glacier from the waterfall and photograph the landscape from different angles, or simply enjoy the grandeur and silence, interrupted only by the sound of melting ice.

Available for: Trips that either begin or end in Kangerlussuaq, depending on flight connections.

Note: Some versions of this excursion include a BBQ lunch at the Roklubben restaurant, which will be specified in your booking.

The tour must be booked in advance.

  • Duration: About 5 hours
  • Activity Level: Easy
  • Terrain: Uneven and bumpy ride on rocky roads. The hiking terrain is also uneven and requires caution and attentiveness. Difficulty level 2/5
  • Total length of the hike: Between 600 and 1,500 meters, depending on preference
  • Refreshments: The tour includes a sandwich and water. Some tour options include a full BBQ at the Roklubben restaurant; in those cases, the sandwich and water are not included.
  • Photo Opportunities: Plenty of chances to take photos throughout the tour
  • Recommended clothing: Warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes
  • Shopping: There are stores in Kangerlussuaq
  • Wheelchair accessible: Not accessible

The excursion is included in the tour price.
