This trip begins with an evening in the artists' quarter Gethsemane, where murals cover entire facades, the ship docks at Cartagena and the legendary Magdalena River takes you inland. What we particularly love about this itinerary is how much time it allows: for villages where life moves at a leisurely pace, for long hours on the water, and for evenings when music takes center stage. Depending on your itinerary, you’ll travel aboard either the AmaMagdalena or the AmaMelodia: two boutique ships built specifically for this river, accommodating a maximum of 60 and 64 passengers, respectively, with 30 crew members and a twin balcony in every cabin, making the passing river a constant companion.
Between stops, the ship passes through the La Mojana region, where the history of cumbia unfolds, and in Santa Bárbara de Pinto, a whole day is devoted to the craft traditions of the interior. Barranquilla provides the grand finale: a private Carnival celebration full of color and rhythm on the last evening aboard.

Arrival and Departure: Boarding takes place at the Cartagena Turistica pier in Cartagena; the cruise ends in Barranquilla. International flights are not included in the tour price; upon request, we can assist with flight arrangements. Before the cruise, you can add shore excursion packages in Cartagena and Medellín, and afterward in Panama City; once a shore excursion package is booked, domestic flights within Colombia are included.
Entry Requirements: German citizens must have a valid passport. You can find the latest travel and safety advisories for Colombia from the Federal Foreign Office. Regulations may vary for other nationalities. Please feel free to contact us.
Food and Drink on Board: All meals on board are included in the tour price, accompanied by beer and wine at lunch and dinner, and the “Sip-and-Sail” cocktail hour takes place every day. If you follow a vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diet, please let us know in advance; the galley is unable to prepare kosher meals.
Note for solo travelers: If you do not request a single cabin, you may be accommodated in a shared cabin on board. In this case, you will be accommodated with other travelers of the same gender and possibly of a different nationality. No single cabin surcharge will apply.

From Cartagena to the river villages inland
Day 1 | Cartagena and an Evening in Getsemaní
Your journey begins in Cartagena on the Caribbean coast. In the Getsemaní neighborhood, colonial walls are painted in vibrant colors, art fills every corner, and the aroma of coastal cuisine fills the air. After an evening full of new experiences, you’ll settle into your cabin, and the ship will set sail on the Río Magdalena.
Day 2 | Palenque, Echoes of Freedom
In Palenque, the first “free place” in the Americas, music, language, and traditions tell stories of resilience and pride; performances and encounters bring you face-to-face with the rhythm of Afro-Colombian culture.
After that, Calamar showcases its charm—from graceful churches to colorful streets—and a " Paola," the local two-person bicycle taxi, will take you through it all.
Day 3 | Through the wetlands, jazz in the evening
At Magangué, you’ll transfer to a small boat: the Boca de Tacaloa wetlands are a sanctuary teeming with birds, whose calls accompany the journey.
In the evening, the ship arrives in Mompox, and an exclusive open-air jazz performance brings the alleys to life.
Day 4 | Mompox and Silver Filigree
During a walking tour combined with a tuk-tuk ride, the UNESCO city of Mompox reveals its tranquil side: narrow streets along the river, workshops where people have been working just as they have for generations. In the filigree workshop, you can watch as jewelry is crafted from wafer-thin silver threads. The city is famous for this craftsmanship.
Day 5 | La Mojana and the Soul of Cumbia
The day belongs to the river: The journey takes you through the tranquil region of La Mojana, a landscape that thrives on the pulse of Colombian culture. Here, the history of the cumbia—the dance that connects continents and generations—unfolds. The day ends in the midst of the rhythm: with an exclusive performance by local musicians and dancers.
Day 6 | A Day in Santa Bárbara de Pinto
In the riverside town of Santa Bárbara de Pinto, people have kept traditions alive for generations: fishermen knot their nets by hand, tobacco leaves are rolled by skilled fingers, and fine handicrafts emerge from the workshops. Whether you choose to stroll through the pastel-colored alleys or explore the surrounding countryside on a guided hike is up to you; afterward, the ship continues its journey toward Sitio Nuevo.
Day 7 | Barranquilla and the Carnival Finale
On your way to the Caribbean, you'll visit a riverside village near Sabanagrande and get a glimpse of everyday life in Colombia before arriving in Barranquilla, the coastal hub brimming with art and music.
The final evening on board is dedicated to a private Carnival celebration—glamorous, colorful, and full of rhythm—marking the end of the voyage.
Day 8 | Disembarkation in Barranquilla
You'll disembark in Barranquilla. If you want to prolong your stay, you can spend a few more days on the Caribbean coast or add a shore excursion.
The daily itineraries described are provided for your reference. Water levels and weather conditions on the Río Magdalena may affect the route; if necessary, the ship will dock at a different location, shore excursions will be adjusted, or the sister ship will be used. The crew handles such changes with well-coordinated procedures to ensure that your trip continues smoothly.

Daily shore excursions (included)
At each port, you can choose from several guided shore excursions included in the tour price: sometimes on foot through colonial streets, sometimes by bicycle taxi, and sometimes by small boat through the wetlands; on select departures only, a single activity may require an additional fee.
Full-day excursions take up most of the day; additional morning or afternoon excursions cannot be added. Your Cruise Manager will help you make your selection.
Cocktail hour and live music in the lounge
Every day, the Sip-and-Sail cocktail hour brings passengers together as the shore glides by, and in the evenings, live music fills the lounge—sometimes featuring local tunes, other times cultural performances.
By the second song at the latest, your foot will be tapping along on its own.
Al-fresco dinners and regional cuisine
The Main Restaurant combines Latin American-inspired cuisine with Western classics; beer and wine are included with lunch and dinner.
Add to that an intimate al fresco dinner: dining outdoors while the night remains warm over the river. If you have any special dietary requests, it’s best to let us know before your trip.
Wellness on Board: Pool and Spa
On the Luna Deck, the pool awaits with a view of the river—the most refreshing part of the day in the tropical heat.

Important:
- We recommend arriving one to two days before the trip begins to allow for any flight or baggage delays.
- Travel health insurance with unlimited coverage is mandatory, and proof of coverage must be provided.
- The trip takes you to remote areas without access to advanced medical facilities. People with life-threatening conditions or who require daily medical care cannot participate.
- Language spoken on board: English. No German-speaking guide is provided.
- There is no elevator on board the AmaMelodia; passengers must use the stairs to move between decks. Shore excursions require a sure footing on piers and cobblestone streets. If you have limited mobility, please contact us before booking.
- We will cancel the trip up to 30 days before departure and notify you by email if the minimum number of 50 participants has not been reached. Such cancellations are extremely rare.
- All cabins can be booked for single occupancy. The single occupancy surcharge is 50 percent of the fare in categories A, B, and C, and 100 percent of the fare in the suites; from time to time, the cruise line offers discounted surcharges to solo travelers.
- We'll advise you on the bed configuration for your cabin when you make your reservation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to the ship, and where does the trip end?
Boarding takes place at the Cartagena Turistica pier in Cartagena; the trip ends in Barranquilla. International flights are not included in the tour price; upon request, we’d be happy to assist with flight arrangements. If you book the land package, domestic flights within Colombia are already included.
What are the entry requirements for Colombia?
German citizens need a valid passport. You can find the Federal Foreign Office’s current travel and safety advisories for Colombia. The relevant embassy or consulate provides authoritative information on visa and passport matters; regulations may vary for other nationalities.
What is the difference between AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia?
The two sister ships are virtually identical in design: The AmaMagdalena carries a maximum of 60 passengers in 30 cabins, while the AmaMelodia carries a maximum of 64 passengers in 32 cabins. Both have three decks, a pool on the Luna Deck, and a double balcony in every cabin. The AmaMelodia does not have an elevator; passengers use stairs to move between decks.
What meals and beverages are included?
All meals on board are included in the tour price, along with beer and wine with lunch and dinner, as well as the daily "Sip and Sail" cocktail hour. Coffee, tea, and bottled water are available around the clock. Premium beverages and imported wines are billed separately.
Can the galley accommodate dietary requests?
The galley is happy to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requests if you let us know in advance. The galley is unable to prepare kosher meals.
What happens if the water level affects the route?
The Río Magdalena is a dynamic river, and the shipping company takes this into account: Depending on the water level, the ship docks at a different location, excursions are adjusted, or the sister ship takes over. The crew handles such changes with well-rehearsed procedures.
What should I pack for this trip?
Lightweight, breathable clothing and sunscreen are essential in Colombia’s warm climate. On board, the dress code is comfortable and casually elegant; for the welcome and farewell dinners, pack something a little more festive.
Can solo travelers book this trip?
Of course: Each cabin can be booked for single occupancy. In categories A, B, and C, the single occupancy surcharge is 50 percent of the cruise fare; in the suites, it is 100 percent. From time to time, the cruise line offers discounted surcharges to solo travelers. Small excursion groups and social evenings in the lounge make it easy to meet other guests.
