Walking safari in Zambia

Day 1: Arrival and first night at Nkwali Camp or Luangwa River Camp

Upon arrival at Lusaka International Airport, you will be greeted by the friendly staff of our local partner agency. They will assist you with immigration, customs, and check-in for your connecting flight to Mfuwe, South Luangwa. The flight takes approximately one hour. Another staff member will welcome you in Mfuwe. The drive to Nkwali takes an hour and passes through bushland, agricultural areas, and colorful villages. Your first stop isNkwali Camp. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views of South Luangwa National Park and the Luangwa River. Robin Pope's private land is the ideal place to start your safari. The six rooms all have views of the river and open-air bathrooms. Depending on your arrival time, you can either enjoy lunch overlooking the lagoon at Nkwali or refresh yourself with afternoon tea before your evening safari drive.

On some dates,you will stay overnight atLuangwa River Camp. It is located beneath the canopy of an ancient ebony forest on the banks of the Luangwa River and offers views of a particularly wildlife-rich area called Luangwa Wafwa. This small and intimate camp, with just five bush suites, has a "wow" factor thanks to its location and cozy atmosphere, and a romantic mood characterizes your stay at this outstanding place.

Day 3: Walking safari and overnight stay in a mobile tented camp

As the sun rises, the bush comes to life and you begin your hike through the remote wilderness. The terrain and wildlife are diverse and rich in species. From ants to buffalo, from the smallest bird's nest to tracking lion tracks – all these aspects of the bush will captivate you. Meanwhile, the tent camp is dismantled, packed up, and set up again in another location. As soon as you arrive after your hike in the late morning, everything is already prepared for your comfort. Lunch, a siesta, and an afternoon tour are on the agenda.

Day 7 or 9: Overnight stay at Nsefu Camp or Tena Tena Camp

The final stage of your walking safari takes you to one of two exclusive camps – Nsefu or Tena Tena.

After an early breakfast, you will set off on a four to five-hour drive in an off-road vehicle. At the Luangwa ford, near Tena, the camp team will welcome you and take you across the river by boat. After a short drive of about 20 minutes, you will reach your destination.

Tena Tena impresses with its dreamlike location on a wide bend of the Luangwa River. Spacious tents with open-air bathrooms and views of the magnificent river landscape are nestled under shady mahogany trees. Each accommodation offers maximum privacy, a private terrace, and an authentic safari feeling. After lunch, there is time to relax before going on a game drive in an off-road vehicle in the afternoon and evening – a welcome change after the days of hiking.

Nsefu Camp, on the other hand, is a piece of safari history: it was Zambia's first safari camp in the 1950s and is located in one of the best game viewing areas in the country. Since 1999, it has been run by Robin Pope, who operates the only two camps here. The six rondavels feature stylish en-suite bathrooms, large windows, and new wooden terraces overlooking the river, which is frequented by numerous animals. The bar is tucked away at the foot of an old termite mound and offers a view of a waterhole that is often visited by leopards, especially at night.

On the day of departure, our partner agency will organize transportation from the camp to Mfuwe Airport.
